  3. unicellular in origin is due to genetic and epigenetic instability. By
  4. the   time  of   diagnosis,  most   neoplasms   consist  of   multiple
  5. subpopulations of cells with different properties. Metastases can have
  6. a clonal  origin and different metastases can originate from different
  7. progenitor  cells. Even in clonal metastases, biologic diversification
  8. gives rise to heterogeneous lesions.
