  4. four-stage system  adopted by the American Joint  Committee on Cancer.
  5. The  distribution of  patients is  shown in parentheses.  The patients
  6. with  clinically  localized   melanomas  (stage  I  by   the  original
  7. three-stage system) have been classified into  two stages according to
  8. tumor thickness  and level  of invasion (designated  stage I  and II).
