- (A) The section demonstrates a typical high-grade osteosarcoma
- (hematoxylin and eosin stain; original magnification x200). Notice the
- typical osteoid (solid curved arrows) being made by malignant stroma
- cells (open arrow). (B) Photomicrograph demonstrates complete tumor
- cell necrosis. No viable cells remain in this section; the lacunae are
- empty, and only the extracellular matrix (osteoid and tumor bone)
- remains. Osteosarcomas may not shrink much, despite complete necrosis,
- owing to the persistence of their extracellular matrix.
