- TABLE 1-1. The Genetic Code
-
- * The RNA codons and their corresponding amino acids are shown. The
- nucleotides are abbreviated for the bases they contain: uridine (U),
- cytosine (C), adenine (A), and guanine (G). The first nucleotide in
- each codon is shown in the left column, the second nucleotide is
- listed along the top of the table, and the third nucleotide is
- indicated in the right column. For example, the RNA codon AUG encodes
- the amino acid methionine (Met). The amino acids are alanine (Ala),
- arginine (Arg), asparagine (Asn), aspartic acid (Asp), cysteine (Cys),
- glutamic acid (Glu), glutamine (Gln), glycine (Gly), histidine (His),
- isoleucine (Ile), leucine (Leu), lysine (Lys), methionine (Met),
- phenylalanine (Phe), proline (Pro), serine (Ser), threonine (Thr),
- tyrosine (Tyr), tryptophan (Trp), and valine (Val). The codons
- specifying chain termination are denoted as Ter.
