  1. FIGURE  1-4.   (A)   Steps   in   Southern   analysis.   1.   and   2.
  2. Restriction-enzyme-digested  DNA  samples  are  size  fractionated  by
  3. agarose gel electrophoresis.  3. DNA in the gel is  denatured and then
  4. transferred from the  gel to a  membrane by  capillary action. DNA  is
  5. fixed  to  the  membrane  following  transfer.  4.  The  membrane   is
  6. hybridized with labeled  probe, then washed to  remove nonspecifically
  7. bound probe. 5. The washed and dried membrane is exposed to x-ray film
  8. for  autoradiography. (B)  Southern  analysis  detection  of  the  mos
  9. oncogene  in mouse,  quail,  and human  cellular  genomic DNA.  Twenty
  10. micrograms each of  mouse DNA digested with EcoRI,  human DNA digested
  11. with HindIII,  and quail DNA  digested with BamHI were  analyzed using
  12. the  v-mos  oncogene  as a  probe.  The  bands  visible in  each  lane
  13. correspond to the fragment size which contains the corresponding c-mos
  14. genes.
