-
-
- You Knew It As Quick ST...
-
- You'll LOVE It As...
-
- WARP 9 - THE SOFTWARE ACCELERATOR!
-
-
-
- HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA - CodeHead Technologies is proud to announce the release
- of its brand new software accelerator -- Warp 9!
-
- On January 1, 1992 we took over support and development of the popular Quick
- ST screen accelerator from Branch Always Software. It's taken over three
- months to complete the modifications necessary to turn it into a CodeHead
- product, but it's well worth the wait. The resulting fruit of our labors is
- Warp 9 -- the fastest, most compatible software graphics/text accelerator
- _ever_ for the Atari line of computers!
-
- We've decided to give it this new name because it's changed so dramatically
- that it's hardly even recognizable anymore. The only similarity between Warp
- 9 and its predecessor, Quick ST, is incredible speed!
-
- Although Warp 9 has a completely new user interface and many new features, the
- major benefit over previous screen accelerators is COMPATIBILITY! Literally
- dozens of bugs and compatibility problems have been eradicated in Warp 9. It
- now works fine with FSM GDOS, and problems have been eliminated with Touch-Up,
- PageStream, and many other programs where redraw and other problems existed.
- Warp 9 also works fine on the TT, and accelerates the graphics of TT Medium
- resolution remarkably.
-
-
- What IS a Software Screen Accelerator?
- ----------------------------------------
-
- Warp 9 operates by intercepting operating system calls. Most of the normal
- operating system calls are not written with the utmost efficiency as far as
- speed is concerned. Warp 9 uses highly optimized assembly language routines
- which can give you speed increases of 400% all the way up to 1200% or more.
- That's from 4 to 12 times faster! The difference is immediately noticable in
- almost every area of your computer activities. Text, graphics, and windows
- virtually fly onto the screen. Once you try using Warp 9, you'll never allow
- yourself to operate without it again.
-
-
- New Features:
- ---------------
-
- The user interface of Warp 9 has been completely revamped. The Warp 9 program
- installs in the AUTO folder, giving increased speed to the loading of your
- AUTO programs. The effectiveness of a software accelerator is normally
- diminished by the additional overhead of other resident programs installed in
- your system. But Warp 9 uses a special trick to avoid this problem. The Warp
- 9 Control Panel accessory communicates with Warp 9, telling it to reinstall
- itself, giving it a prime position for acceleration. If you want to save
- memory by not installing the Warp 9 Control Panel, you can auto-run our
- QuickGrab program which will provide the same function. This gives you the
- best of both worlds, the utmost in speed during the bootup process as well as
- at the desktop level and in your applications.
-
- Besides speed and compatibility, Warp 9 offers you all of the same features
- available in Quick ST and much more. You can replace the system screen font
- with one of your own, or choose from any of the 6 dozen fonts included with
- Warp 9. You can also change the system fill patterns, altering the look of
- your windows and dialog boxes. You can change the desktop's background
- pattern by using a custom fill pattern or even load a picture in any
- resolution, including the TT resolutions. Warp 9 can load pictures in many
- formats, including PI1, PI2, PI3, PC1, PC2, PC3, TNY, TN1, TN2, TN3, and PNT.
- The font, fills, and background pictures can be configured to load
- automatically when you boot up. Fonts and fill patterns can be edited by
- using the included Customizer program.
-
- There's also a completely configurable mouse accelerator built right into Warp
- 9. You can tailor the acceleration to your own needs, or choose from one of
- the four preset configurations available. Other optional mouse features
- include "blocking" to keep the mouse from accidentally entering the menu bar
- area, "jumping" to force the mouse to the menu bar at the click of the right
- mouse button, and separately configurable horizontal and vertical wrap-around
- of the mouse when it reaches the edge of the screen.
-
- Warp 9 also includes the functionality of FunkAlert, the shareware program by
- Charles F. Johnson. This gives you the ability to select any button in any
- standard alert box by the simple press of a function key. You can turn off
- the system Zoom Boxes, too, for even more speed. A well-written 50-page
- manual gives detailed instructions for using every facet of Warp 9.
-
-
- Order Warp 9 today...you just can't get a faster, more compatible screen
- accelerator for your Atari computer, and you also receive the quality and
- support for which CodeHead Technologies is famous.
-
-

- Dave,
-
- Thanks for the compliment on our new product brochure! I did that layout
- with Calamus, and created the background graphics with Avant Vector. I used
- Compugraphic Times for the body text, Cherry Alpine for the titles and
- subtitles, and other Cherry fonts for accents and caps. Then we sent the
- Calamus file up to Omnicomp in San Francisco for linotype output at 1693dpi.
- (That's the highest resolution they can output from Calamus.)
-
- We ended up having to send it to them 5 times, broken up into smaller
- sections each time, because they kept running out of memory trying to print
- it. :)
-

-
- Ken,
-
- Argh! You're right, the illustrations are swapped on pages 31 and 35.
- Sigh. Something else to add to the README file.
-
- I'll have a look at the Pagestream slowdown when the "desktop picture"
- feature is used.
-
- You're correct that the right button "mouse jump" feature can interfere with
- programs that look for right button clicks. I may have a remedy for this in
- the near future; one of our beta testers made a good suggestion for how to
- handle this kind of situation. (Thanks, Mel!)

- Ken,
-
- We made no agreement to continue listing Darek's name. We've purchased all
- rights to the program. But we endeavor to always be fair and the truth is
- that Darek did a wonderful job of writing the original Quick ST. Charles did
- a lot of work molding it to our CodeHead form (and eliminating bugs), but
- Darek's work will always be there.
-
- The swapping of the manual's screen graphics is my fault. I did a paste-up
- and must have been asleep at the switch.
-
- To All,
-
- Speaking of being fair, I am obligated to clarify our press release (why, I
- don't know). We had an irate caller today who had ordered Warp 9 by phone the
- Tuesday after our press release (the day after the product was released). He
- was extremely upset that he had not received it yet (six days later) and
- accused us of false advertising and bad business practices, saying that we are
- _not_ "shipping" if we have not shipped his order.
-
- To eliminate any possible confusion by others, when we say that "Warp 9 is now
- shipping", we mean that we are shipping copies of Warp 9 to those who have
- ordered them in the order they were received. It does not mean that your
- order will be shipped the day you call us (although that will shortly be the
- case). I know that the vast majority of you understand this and I hope that
- _all_ of you will be able to accept this. I do not feel that it is our
- obligation to mention in our press release that your order may be delayed
- while we fill those orders that have been waiting for three months. "Now
- shipping" means "now shipping".

- Steve,
-
- That's Write evidently does not like ANY screen accelerator. I hope version 2
- will fix that problem. Warp 9 must be turned off or That's Write will 'bomb'.
-
- However, this is the only program so far that I've tried (still have a few to
- go) that I have to remember to 'turn off' Warp 9. (had to do the same thing
- with Turbo ST.....the fault lies with That's Write, I'm sure).
-
- Warp 9 is FAST! For example, I have the mouse setting on #1 because the other
- settings made the darn critter move so quickly, I was everywhere on the screen
- but where I wanted to be <grin>. It looks like Codehead has yet another
- 'feather in their cap'.
-
- Anna
-
-
-
- ------
-
- J.EIDSVOOG1
-
- John,
-
- I have That's Write and unless I disable Warp 9, it will 'bomb' and I have to
- reboot. It's very sly though. That's Write will load fine; you can load new
- fonts, type whatever you want, etc. It will even print the document. But, if
- after printing something you move the mouse pointer to the menu bar (e.g. to
- EXIT for example), I get some minor screen garbage and a row of 3 (I think
- it's 3) bombs and a system crash. If I turn Warp 9 off, than everything is
- fine. That's Write seems to have problems with any screen accelerator. I had
- to turn Turbo ST off as well or it would cause problems when printing.
-
- I have also noticed something weird when using Aladdin to call GEnie. I have
- one of the Courier fonts (that you so thoughtfully included with Warp 9)
- installed instead of the system font. Aladdin, in term mode, however still
- uses the system font. As we all know, Aladdin accesses the drive quite a bit
- when doing an Autopass so, whenever the dialog/alert box that says "Loading
- Topic List" appears, it changes the font style that it covers when briefly on-
- screen to the Courier font! So, I wind up having part of the screen in system
- font and part in Courier....a bit strange to look at <grin>. I've also found
- that when calling the Warp 9 Control Panel from the Desktop when I have a
- Degas pic loaded in as a background, it wipes out the pic when I exit (leaving
- part of the picture around the edges.).

- Anna,
-
- I just checked your report with TW 1.52 and didn't see any problem
- dropping menus after printing via Print Bios. Using Print Direct produced the
- odd screen you mentioned, when dropping a menu after printing, although I
- didn't see any bombs. I've always preferred Print Bios over Direct, so that's
- probably why I never noticed this. In the past I've used QST3 many a time
- with TW's Print Bios and had no problems. If you haven't already, try using
- Print Bios for now. Hope this helps. Thanks!

-
- Anna,
-
- Aladdin's terminal screen is probably beyond hope to have replacement fonts
- work properly because of the 'bizarre' way Aladdin uses the OS fonts while
- it's online. I doubt even Charles could fix that problem (which is caused by
- Aladdin NOT Warp-9.) Best bet is to use the system font while Aladdin is
- online.
-
- I don't share your problem with the desktop picture background not redrawing
- properly. I think you may have to provide a little more info such as which
- other utilities you have installed, etc.

- I believe the problem with Aladdin is that it has its own screen
- accelerator built-in. I believe it draws directly to the screen from the
- system fonts, bypassing the BIOS and VDI.

-
- Anna,
-
- Mel Motogawa is one of our beta testers and has had no problem with That's
- Write. Maybe he can shed some light on your problem (new version of That's
- Write, different MO, etc.).
-
- However if you _do_ continue having problems, or you find problems with any
- other programs, you don't have to remember to manually disable Warp 9. The
- README file (remember those? <grin>) tells you how to set up a file to
- automatically disable Warp 9 for problem programs.
-
- Regarding Aladdin, there's no way for Warp 9 to force it to use the alternate
- font. Aladdin somehow bypasses all Warp 9's efforts to use the alternate font
- and prints the system font directly to the screen (in the terminal screen).
-
- But when Aladdin gets a redraw message (after a dialog box closes, etc.), it
- uses GEM to redraw the text and Warp 9 steps in with the Alternate font,
- leaving a strange look. This can't be helped.
-
- As for the background picture glitches after exiting the Warp CP, we haven't
- experienced that. I just tested it again and couldn't cause it. Perhaps you
- have a resident program that's interfering. If you could do some more testing
- to figure out what it is, we'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

-
- Anna,
-
- That strange font behavior in Aladdin is beyond my control. Aladdin draws
- its text directly to the screen using the system font, bypassing all TOS/GEM
- text functions -- which means that Warp 9 never sees the text output, and
- can't intercept it. For some reason, Aladdin does use the normal text output
- routines when redrawing areas of the screen that were covered by a dialog box,
- so in that case you'll see your custom font in those areas.
-
- As for That's Write, try Mel's advice and use the 'Print Bios' function
- instead of 'Print Direct' -- that should solve the problem.

- benchmarking utilities that came with QST the BMVGTEFF.PRG program had Warp 9
- generally 1/200 of a second slower than QST. QINDEX.PRG 1.8 showed a 7%

- Warp-9 is great and worth the wait. However, I've encountered a minor bug, not
- with Warp-9, but with the MultiDesk Deluxe version 3.4 which accompanies the
- package. It appears that Min-Cal version 1.4 is incompatible both as an ACC
- and as an MDX. Within various programs, including Aladdin and WordPerfect, it
- causes a crash on exit. Within NeoDesk (sorry) it causes a return to Min-Cal

-
- Try this, You'll like it.
-
-
- 1. Upgrade to Warp9
- 2. Set the mouse acceleration on '4' (or edit it higher)
- 3. Use a Bigscrn emulator (now I Really want a 19" Monitor !!)
- (I Think I downloaded it here).
- 4. Set the 'Block' and 'Jump' mouse options
- 5. Then you can use the Custom font (I set mine for MAC for fun).
-

- I am wondering about the functionability of DC Shower with Warp 9. You
- mention that DC Shower will not funtion properly with Warp 9. I am wondering

-
- Although I like the program (Warp 9) and it looks faster visually in some
- things than did QST. I compaired them both with the same AUTO programs and
- ACC's (varying them some) using Quick Index 2.2 and QST seemed to be as fast
- or faster (a tiny) than Warp 9 (with Warp9_CP.ACC). Now I know that you mainly
- corrected many bugs and made more programs compatible for use. That is the
- most important part! I think that you did a great job, and I know that you
- will push the limits of the program to the max.

- The symtoms I have encountered happen when you are done viewing a file with
- DC Shower. Hitting [Q] or [UNDO] can give you a dialog box that says: "This
- application cannot find the folder or file you just tried to access," and when
- you click on "OK" or hit return you get a desktop devoid of icons until the
- screen can be redrawn. Drive letters and names are still visible.
- My experiments suggest that this only occurs in TOS 2.06 on my system. My
- other TOS is 1.2 and in that environment I could not duplicate the problem.
- On another subject entirely... I tried to play a Breakout game last night
- while I had H Wrap and mouse acceleration enabled. It adds a new level to the

- Regarding Quick Index and number-watchers, you are bound to find some
- differences in certain areas. The reason for this is that we had to add code
- to some routines to eliminate the bugs caused by previous shortcuts (short-
- comings) in Quick ST. We also gained speed by revamping the way Warp 9 hooks
- into the vectors. The end-result is that most things are faster overall, but
- if you look hard enough you can find some numbers that are higher for QST than
- Warp 9.
-
- Personally, I don't care about a few numbers if Warp 9 "looks faster visually"
- than QST (your own words). Remember that if QST gets (hypothetically) 464%
- and Warp 9 gets 462%, this is 2 percentage _points_, not 2% difference in
- speed. It's actually 4/10 of a percent difference (464/462). I defy anyone,
- anywhere to perceive this difference without a benchmark program. The bottom
- line is...Warp 9 is the fastest and most compatible software accelerator
- available for ST/TT computers.
-
- I doubt that we'll be able to increase the speed any further in the routines
- that Warp 9 is handling. We do plan to release a free bug-fix patch as some
- of the more obscure bugs are found. Our beta-testers did a great job of
- catching the majority of the bugs, but we were fully prepared to get more
- obscure reports once the general public had a chance to test with all of the
- junk...er, ah, other programs they use. <grin>
-
- Tomas documented the symptoms of the problems with DC Shower. We have given a
- copy of Warp 9 to Double Click Software to see if a solution can be found. DC
- Shower is watching for particular system calls that Warp 9 is handling,
- consequently DC Shower never sees them and doesn't operate properly.
-
- B. Stringer,
-
- We haven't experienced any problems with the mouse features. Warp 9 works
- fine with Neodesk here. Perhaps you could do some detective work to determine
- if there is a conflicting program installed. If so, we'd like to know so we
- can attempt to rectify it.

- The FKeys will not work in system alert boxes because the system makes direct
- calls to the ROMs and Warp 9 cannot catch them (this is explained in the
- FunkAlert documentation, but was omitted from the Warp 9 docs). As for
- programs using function keys, it depends on how they are reading them. Fkeys
- should work in all programs as long as they are not grabbing the keyboard
- interrupt.
-
- The same is true of the Zoom Boxes. Turning off the "Zoom Boxes" button will
- only disable zoom boxes called by external applications (this IS explained on
- page 13 of the manual).
-
- Quick Index is included on the Warp 9 disk. The first batch of disks went out
- without Quick Index, but it is now included.

- Ken Vandellen,
-
- Of _course_ PageStream is not junk, it's a very powerful program. I just
- tested the redraw speed with a background picture and couldn't notice any
- difference with or without a background picture. Perhaps you could give more
- details about your system (TOS, computer, monitor) and what circumstances show
- the slowdown in redraw speed (such as exposed pieces of the background
- picture, etc.).
-
- There's no reason that a background picture should affect the redraw speed.
- Warp 9 handles the background redraws whether there's a picture there or not.
- For each redraw message, if there's no picture, Warp 9 draws a rectangle of
- fill. If there's a picture, it does a raster copy of a rectangle from the
- picture. Both operations take virtually the same amount of time.

- Aladdin and the OS font.
-
- Aladdin has it's own routines for drawing into the terminal window. This is
- done _only_ for performance. Several of the VDI routines are very slow (As you
- well know, otherwise you wouldn't have this product), that the screen output
- is either anoying slow, or just plain ugly (vro_copyfrm, in a color screen).
-
- Aladdin was designed to detect if we are running in a "standard rez" (original
- 520 modes), and if so, to use optimized Asm for screen output, otherwise we
- use the VDI (Monoterm, TT medrez, etc...)
-
-
- The problem:
-
- Aladdin uses my standard window redraw routines, it does this so the highspeed
- routines do not have to worry about clipping, 99% of the users will not be
- effected. The effect if you are using an alternate system font is just ugly,
- and not harmfull.
-
- If it is possible to legaly detect with warp9 is installed, we could add a
- flag to tell Aladdin to use the VDI when warp9 is installed.
-
- Another option considered for v2.0 is to add a config option "Use VDI?"

- Regarding the UIS issue, if you are using a version of UIS that requires
- particular placement in the AUTO folder, you should update it for a correctly
- working version. It is _not_ operating properly, even though it may seem to
- work OK when it is swapped with Warp 9. It will still cut other resident
- handlers out of the trap #2 vector. The symptoms of this may not be
- immediately obvious, but may exhibit themselves in many ways, including random
- unexplained crashes.

- Tom@Quidnunc,
-
- As John has mentioned, you need to update your UIS 3 to the latest version.
- The problem you solved by swapping AUTO folder order is a problem in that
- version of UIS 3 -- it was not following the trap #2 vector-stealing protocol
- we outlined in our "11 Commandments."

-
- Ron,
-
- The color "smearing" you're complaining about has nothing to do with Warp 9.
- If I'm not mistaken, you've already discovered this for yourself -- you did
- say you removed Warp 9 and the "problem" persisted, right? (So I have to
- wonder why you're still complaining to us?)
-
- STalker is using the system's raster copy functions to scroll its window;
- you're seeing what happens when TOS executes a raster copy call. The current
- version of Warp 9 does not handle these calls; it may in a future update.
-
- In the meantime, it might be best if you speak to the programmer whose work
- exhibits the "problem." There are tricks that can be used to get around the
- "smearing." (Tricks like I used in MaxiFile's text viewer.)
-
- P.S. Thanks for the offer, but we do have beta testers with color monitors
- already...
-
- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-
- Just so nobody gets the wrong idea, the "smearing" Ron is talking about is
- _not_ something that trashes your screen display, or causes any other problem
- of any kind. It's a very transitory "flicker" that occurs only when a program
- like STalker uses the TOS raster copy functions to scroll a window -- it is
- only noticeable in color resolutions, and only on unaccelerated machines
- without blitters. It seems to bother some folks more than others. :) And it
- has nothing to do with Warp 9.

-
- Thanks for replying to my questions. I guess that you can consider me a
- "number-watcher" when it comes to benchmarking, but like I said WARP 9 does
- look faster than QST and that is all that does matter to me! I just thought
- that I would mention it to you (the number comparrison) although I know that
- the numbers are not what really counts....it is the outcome that matters most.
-
- As for DC Shower I will have to try it some more with WARP 9. I never used 'Q'
- or 'UNDO' to exit a text file, but instead did a left and right mouse click (I
- also have TOS 1.4 if it matters).
-
- If there is one bug (I hate to use that word) that you would like to check
- out, it is a minor (cosmetic) problem with Interlink. When first loading
- Interlink with Warp 9 the main background fill 'should' be a SOLID pattern,
- but a strange looking fill pattern fills that area instead. It also fills
- certain areas of other programs when they are run from Interlink. This problem
- also exsisted with QST. It has not caused a crash or any damage that I know
- of, but thought I would let you know in case it can be fixed.
-
- THANKS!!
-
- P.S. I vote to also include Buttonfix.ACC into the WARPCP.ACC. Also I use

- the WARPCP.ACC too? And can you make it cook dinner, wash the dishes...am I

- We cannot guarantee that the mouse effects will work in every program. All
- Warp 9 can do is attempt to handle the mouse in the manner you've chosen. If
- there is interference in programs, there's simple nothing that can be done

- The upcoming free upgrade patch to Warp 9 will include a more configurable

- Charles,
- WRONG. This is a 16mhz AdSpeed equiped machine. TurboST 1.84 does NOT
- have the problem, although Quick ST 2.2 does, as does Warp 9. I can't believe
- ANYONE can tolerate this type of scrolling smear.
- Its worse than the LCD smear on a laptop.
- I know there are ways around the problem in the application software, but
- getting ONE program to fix it for ALL programs (as TurboST does) is much
- simpler than trying to get umpteen programmers to fix it for all the programs.
- I can't believe that your beta-testers didn't mention this problem, or
- perhaps they all have blitters.. It's back to TurboST for me, sadly, because
- even though I LOVE the other features of Warp 9, I can't tolerate this 'little
- problem'. I suppose that it is ok to sell the Warp 9 package to someone with
- a blitter....?

- Ron,
-
- I am not wrong. This is not a problem in Warp 9; it's a feature that Warp 9
- doesn't have. This is different from a "problem," Ron. Warp 9 is NOT causing
- any problems; the "smearing" you find intolerable is simply the way the
- machine works, in its normal state -- WITH or WITHOUT Warp 9 installed.
-
- Turbo ST handles raster copy calls. Warp 9 does not. Turbo ST is enhancing
- an aspect of TOS that Warp 9 is not. (But it evens out, because Warp 9
- enhances other aspects that Turbo ST doesn't.) As I said, we're considering
- adding raster copy code to a future update of Warp 9; but this is definitely
- not a trivial task, and not something that can be easily knocked out in a week
- or two.
-
- I know it's impossible for you to believe, Ron, but some people do not find
- this "smearing" intolerable at all. After all, this is what an Atari computer
- does, out of the box. (Saying that it's worse than "LCD smear on a laptop" is
- absurd.) Warp 9 does not "improve" this aspect of TOS (yet), but it is NOT
- causing any problem of any kind. Please stop insisting that it is.

- Even WITH the blitter, I can see some amount of the smearing. I guess what
- happens is that each color plane is moved individually, so on my medium rez
- monitor, even with the blitter, I can see very brief flashes of red with each
- scroll, in STalker and some other programs. I don't see any blue or green,
- but that might just be me.
-
- I have never found it particularly annoying, though. Maybe because the
- blitter minimizes it. I'll have to try turning off the blitter.
-
- All told, Warp 9 does its job very well. Charles' customizer does everything
- that Robert Birmingham's did for QST, and I like being able to change fill
- patterns every few weeks. I've tried some of the replacement fonts, and am
- not real satisfied with any of them, but that is because of the limitations of
- the med rez monitor. You can't do much with a 8x8 matrix.
-
- Personally, at the $20 upgrade price, I think I ripped them off. Next is the

-
- Anyway, here's all you need to do to get your screen inverted every 10

-
- 1. Install Hotsaver 1.6 in MultiDesk as a resident ACC. (Or a

- 2. Click on its name in the MultiDesk list.
- 3. Click on the top button in the stack (Reserve Screen) so it's NOT

- 5. When you're sure it's doing what you want, Save your config

-
- Of course there's lots of adjustments you can make (to the way it affects the

- Interesting Question: Does anyone out there see the color smear (I call it
- Plane BLiTTing) on a machine with TOS 2.06/TOS 3.06? Just curious..
-
- I have a machine that has TOS 3.05 and I can see Plane BLiTTing on my screen
- in some applications. On my machine with TOS 3.06, I don't see any Plane
- BLiTTing at all.
-
- BTW.. There were some optimizations done in the VDI in TOS 3.06 (I think they
- are in TOS 2.06 as well) that help to minimize this effect.

- ACCESSORIES (Multidesk Deluxe, Maxifile 3, Atari Extensile Control Panel)

- After booting up and coming up in NEODESK, I exit NEODESK and return to GEM.

- Hmmmm I don't see NEOLOAD.PRG in that Auto folder. It MUST be there or you
- definately will have problems with MultiDesk Deluxe either while you're in
- NeoDesk, or once you exit from NeoDesk. Also NEOLOAD can be a buggaboo about

- Maccel3 any more, and haven't gotten my Warp 9 yet, but NEOLOAD is after
- Pinhead, ICDTIME (suggest you use TIMESET instead), and UIS on my system with
- no problems. IMHO you should be using TIMESET instead of ICDTIME. I only use
- ICDTIME when I want to change the time/date in my ICD controller. When your
- machine bombs, or you run certain programs that mess up the clock you can get
- the time/date messed up in your ICD controller since it changes to the same as
- in the ST. Sometimes when a program bombs it will mess up the clock and also
- trash the time/date in your ICD clock if you use ICDTIME. Timeset just puts
- the time from your ICD clock into the ST and then goes away. I got tired of
- having my ICD clock messed up sometimes when my system locked up, bombed, or I
- ran a program that had bugs which messed up the time/date.

- John Schumanns,
-
- The symptoms you describe (HotWire running programs at the wrong time) are
- caused by HotWire getting cut out of the trap #2 routine. Make sure you are at
- least running HotWire 2.0 (which was released 2-1/2 years ago). Otherwise,
- the problem sounds suspiciously like the same old UIS problem. Remove it and
- see if your problem disappears. If so, change the order of HotWire, UIS,
- and/or Warp 9. And by all means, everyone with this problem, PLEASE, get an
- update to UIS. All of our programs get along fine together as far as the trap

- Mike,
- FASTBIT isn't quite as fast as Pinhead (according to the CodeHeads), and
- setting the FASTBIT is something you must do manually, and must remember to do
- for all new files you get. Also, there is no easy way to handle those
- programs that will fast load, but must have more ram cleared, but not ALL ram.
- Pinhead handles all these situations transparently.
-
- Al,
- If I remember the NeoDesk manual correctly, it stressed the need for
- Neoload with ANY large .ACC that might do more than an internal
- initialization. The problem seems to be that the .ACCs aren't finished with
- their setup before the Desktop loads, leaving it without information it needs.

- Charles & John,

- I also found a program that does not work properly with Warp 9 unless it
- is turned off before running. It is called Great Chefs by Concept
- Developments. I had the same problem with Quick ST 3, although the program
- runs fine with Turbo 1.8. Great Chefs is run under Softworks Basic runtime
- system v2.0 by Softworks LTD. The program will run, but all text is aligned
- in one column to the far right of the screen, with only one letter of each
- line showing. I'm not complaining, I just thought you would like to know.
- Thanks for a great program!

- Bob,
-
- If you use the Warp 9 Control Panel desk accessory, it doesn't matter where
- the Warp 9 program runs in the AUTO folder. In fact, it's best to have it run
- as early as possible; I have it running right after PinHead on my system.
- When Warp 9 runs early in the AUTO folder, it can actually accelerate the
- bootup process significantly.
-
- The Control Panel desk accessory sends a special message to the resident
- program after everything else has loaded, telling it to reinstall itself in
- the exception vectors. (Sorry if I'm getting too technical -- but to boil it
- down, the whole point of this "reinstallation" business is to let Warp 9
- operate at its optimum peak efficiency.)
-
- If you don't use the Warp 9 Control Panel, the Warp 9 program should run as
- close to the end of the AUTO folder as possible, so that it installs its
- exception vectors after everything else, and can run as fast as it can
- (without the extra boost provided by the Control Panel).
-
- Note that Warp 9 itself _does_not_care_ about its AUTO folder position; it
- can run before or after GDOS, before or after big screen drivers, etc. One of
- the primary goals in creating Warp 9 was to free the program from dependency
- on AUTO folder order, and to achieve the ultimate acceleration no matter what
- its AUTO position. However, some other programs may be sensitive to their
- position in the AUTO folder, and may need to run before or after Warp 9, for
- reasons of their own.
-
- The only examples I know about right now: Hisoft's AMON debugger needs to
- run BEFORE the Warp 9 AUTO program, and some versions of UIS 3 also need to
- run before Warp 9. The current version of UIS 3 (v3.3) doesn't care about its
- AUTO folder position; if you don't have this version, you should upgrade for
- full compatibility with Warp 9.

- Poolfix is for Tos 1.4, and I believe TOs 1.6. Other versions don't need
- it, and it will display a message telling you so, and will not install.
-
- Vince, and others,
- That is a really strange symptom you have there. Really makes you wonder
- how the programmer of Great Chefs did things to have Warp 9 put things over
- like that...
- The position in the AUTO folder can significantly affect the speed of Warp
- 9 if you don't use the .ACC. The .ACC will give you maximum acceleration, and
- the improvement is really dramatic. Try the speed tests with and without the
- .ACC if you want to see what you get for the 17k the .ACC takes up, not to
- mention the control you get for it.
- In other words, USE THE .ACC.

- HotWire (with WARP9 installed) will indeed run programs from the desktop
- "by mistake" if you type a letter into a dialog box on the GEM desktop that
- corresponds with an entry in the HotWire menu. I use TOS 1.04. This will
- happen even if HotWire and WARP9 are the only AUTO programs, AND either the

- If you use PinHead, it's best _not_ to set the fastload bit for any programs.
- If you do, you will not benefit from PinHead's automatic handling (which is no
- faster). The advantages of PinHead over fastloading are that it is automatic
- for all programs and accessories without having to explicitly set anything in
- each program, and that because it automatically skips 32K, it doesn't cause
- the problems with ACCs that are caused by normal "fastloading".
-
- Poolfix is for TOS 1.04 and 1.06. It WILL cause unexplained, random crashes.
- If you say, "I haven't had any crashes, except when running some programs",
- those crashes may be caused by not using Poolfix. We get a couple of calls a
- week from people who have never heard of Poolfix and are crashing because of
- it. Just today a caller said that he was crashing with just Warp 9 and GDOS
- installed. The only explanation could be that he was not using Poolfix (and
- hadn't ever heard of it). One sure way to crash is to install nothing but
- CodeRam on TOS 1.06, open up the RAM disk window and hit Esc. Install Poolfix
- and the problem will disappear, and so will other unexplained problems. USE
- it...if you have TOS 1.04 or 1.06.
-
- I'm always amazed at the number of problems people have with Neoload, auto-
- starting Neodesk, and using MultiDesk with Neodesk. Those who use HotWire
- instead of Neodesk don't have any of these problems, nor do they have to mess
- around with windows, folders, dragging things, or running out of space on the
- desktop. And HotWire owners can get things done much faster than any other
- method. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
-
- Roy,
-
- You can use Desk Manager's custom file option to copy different Warp 9
- configurations for different resolutions.
-
- Tim,
-
- We've never been able to get Atari to "commit" to exactly what part of Line-A
- will not be supported. Logically, the only areas that will have problems are
- possibly some of the Line-A "routines", because there's a place where there
- are only four variables, one for each plane. This won't work if planes are
- greater than four.
-
- But instead, they took the easy way out and just said "don't use Line-A",
- which is a bit ridiculous. The things we tend to use from Line-A are things
- which should be valid forever such as horizontal and vertical resolution,
- number of planes, mouse position, etc.
-
- Warp 9 updates the font pointers in Line-A, so you could copy the current font
- into Aladdin if you want.

- I have to say I am very impressed!!! Even though I use it stripped down
- (i.e., just with the FKEY box turned on and the mouse accelerator set to
- 1...no fills, no pictures, no fonts), I still feel it is more than worth
- the price. The 'profession look' of it is almost worth the price.
-
- However, I am having one small problem. I have a program that I use every
- once in while that is called COMPARE.PRG (aka FCU.PRG) written by Richard
- Norris. It's always been a tempermental little devil, even running under
- TurboST.
-
- When running under TurboST, I'd execute it via the HotWire menu....going
- to Multidesk, turning off TurboST, coming back to HotWire and then exec-
- uting COMPARE.PRG. When I was done with COMPARE, I'd return to HotWire,
- set TurboST back to the ON state and everything was fine. Not so with
- Warp 9.
-
- First I tried running COMPARE via HotWire with Warp 9 turned on. I'd get
- three bombs and come right back to HotWire. After that the system wasn't
- trustable...weird and spastic things would happen.
-
- Next, I tried putting COMPARE.PRG into my WARP9.DAT file so WARP 9 would
- be automatically turned off when I ran COMPARE. The same results...three
- bombs and back to HotWire.
-
- Finally, I tried turning off WARP9 first via the accessory. Then COMPARE
- would run just fine. BUT it'd give me two bombs when it exited back to
- the desktop or HotWire...but it would run that way.
-
- Any idears? It seems that WARP9.DAT isn't turning off WARP 9 even though
- I put COMPARE.PRG into the listing. The following is a copy of my WARP9.
- DAT file (everything is left justified in the file)...
-
- W935
- NOTATOR.PRG
- COMPARE.PRG
-
- ...Do not waste a lot of time on this as I am probably the only person in
- the world still using this program (there are newer programs out that do
- the same job, but you know what they say about 'teaching an old dog new
- tricks' <grin>), and I only use the program 3-6 times a year. I am more
- curious as to why my WARP9.DAT file is not turning off WARP 9 than any-
- thing else.

- Regarding Poolfix, it doesn't matter how many hard drives or floppies you
- have...if you're using TOS 1.04 or 1.06, use Poolfix...period. You WILL have
- bombs if you don't, even if you don't use much memory. It's not related to the

- crash...use Poolfix and you won't. Please!! <I'm not "horsing" around here>

- OK -- the Interlink "Funny Fill Mystery" has been solved. Lloyd put his
- finger on it; the X factor in this equation was the blitter. Turn the blitter
- off and the problem showed up.
-
- It's fixed now. We'll have a free update soon to take care of this and
- several other problems that have been reported. And this free update will
- also include a MAJOR BONUS -- version 3.60 of Warp 9 will now handle the TOS
- raster copy calls (both VDI and Line A), leading to VERY BIG speed
- improvements (particularly in window scrolling) on machines without blitter
- chips. Scrolling through a document in Word Perfect is almost TWICE as fast
- with this new code, and scrolling in MaxiFile's text viewer is about THREE
- times faster. Watch for this update soon.
-
- - Charles
-
- P.S. And yes, Ron -- it does handle scrolling in such a way that "color
- smearing" is eliminated. Maybe now you can stop saying on Fidonet that Warp 9
- "causes" color smearing. I hope you'll devote the same energy to spreading
- the word that this "problem" will soon be fixed as you devoted to blaming Warp
- 9 incorrectly...

- Vince,

- The advantage of Poolfix4 over version 3 is that it uses XBRA protocol. Since

- The POOLFIX4.PRG saga continues. I reinstalled the POOLFIX4.prg in my auto
- folder and saw the return of the unpredictable configuration settings of
- WARP9. To be specific, I have the accessory set for BLOCK on. With POOLFIX
- installed, block doesn't seem to work but I do get vertical scroll of the
- cursor! When I loaded PHA$AR I could not access the menu bar no matter what. I
- played around with the order of files in the auto folder, replaced TOS14FIX
- with TOS14FX2 and even tried adding a copy of NEOLOAD.PRG to the Auto folder.
- The result is that only by removing poolfix4 from the AUTO folder will WARP9
- configure reliably on my system! Go figure! I had been booting with
- Simpsons boot delay prog on drive A and even tried booting without that with
- no benefit. I guess I'll live dangerously for now without POOLFIX. If I

- Ron,
-
- The only "jumping on" you got (here) was for insisting that Warp 9 had a
- problem. It does not. We kept jumping on you until you realized this (even
- though you still did not admit it).
-
- The real problem here is that it doesn't matter what actual words you used ("I
- have a problem with Warp 9 STalker") here or on the Fidonet. The
- aggressiveness with which you insisted that it was something we needed to fix
- caused MANY people to _read_ that Warp 9 has a problem. This is evidenced by
- the fact that we've seen messages on our own BBS stating "I heard on the
- Fidonet that Warp 9 causes messed-up colors in Stalker. Are you going to fix
- this?"
-
- This kind of misinformation spreads all over the world and Warp 9 gets a
- completely undeserved bad rap...AND IT HURTS OUR SALES. I know that your only
- intention was completely selfish and you had no intention of hurting our
- sales, but this is the result.
-
- Charles's question still stands. Will you be announcing through the same

-
- Bruce Stringer,
-
- I have no idea why Poolfix4 would cause unpredictable configuration settings
- with Warp 9. You are the only one reporting this problem. I'd suggest that
- you test it with only Poolfix4 and Warp 9 installed. If you still have the
- problem, then you must have a corrupt copy of Poolfix4 (or even Warp 9?). As
- for Phasar, there is no way that we can predict how any program will handle
- the right mouse button. The mouse effects are included in Warp 9 for those
- that can use them. They function as advertised, but we can't magically
- prohibit programs from using the right mouse button for their own needs. The
- upgrade to Warp 9 will include selective disable of features in Warp 9 for the
- programs you run.

- The update will also speed up scrolling if you have a blitter, but the extra
- acceleration won't be as noticeable. There's no way to speed up the operation
- of the blitter, but there is less overhead in the blitter setup code, so it
- will be slightly faster.
-
- The new raster copy code comes within a hair of being as fast as the

-
- 2) Mouse effects being disabled after running a TTP program -- fixed.
-
- 3) Garbage fill patterns in Interlink -- fixed.
-
- 4) Running Hisoft's AMON debugger after Warp 9 messed up Warp 9's GDOS

- Jason,
-
- Selecting the blitter function in CodeRam affects _only_ CodeRam's method of
- transferring data to and from the RAM disk. If you've got it turned on (and
- you've got a blitter), CodeRam will use the blitter to for RAM disk transfers.
- If it's off, CodeRam will use its own (still very fast) transfer routines.
- This has nothing to do with the settings of the blitter on the desktop or in
- HotWire.
-
- Chris Bullock,
-
- I think we'll need a little more information about what your specific problem
- is before we can help you. All I can suggest is that you try booting up with
- only Warp 9 installed and no other resident programs or accessories. If it
- works that way, then you know that you have a conflict somewhere else in your
- system and you can begin to diagnose where it is.
-
- Scott Holmes,
-
- At this time we have no plans for including Button Fix in Warp 9. There are
- currently two alternatives available, one commercial (MultiDesk Deluxe) and
- one freeware (BUTTNFIX.ACC). These options are available from us even though
- their purpose is to fix a problem that is not even ours (double-scrolling in
- windows).
-
- MultiDesk Deluxe already communicates directly with HotWire to enable/disable
- ButtonFix for the programs that need it. For those that don't want to enjoy
- the incredible benefits of owning MultiDesk Deluxe, there's a free
- alternative. To include the Button Fix code in Warp 9 would needlessly
- duplicate code for the vast number of MultiDesk users. Try it, you'll like

- Absolutely, in fact, I already HAVE. I realize that some people fail to
- read all of a post, and that any complaint about a product can have negative
- effect on sales, but ANY new product will have shortcomings, and bugs, that
- sneak past even the most rigorous testing. Until a product is released into
- the vast diversity of users, setups, and environments, you never find some
- subtle problems, or realize that some users will sieze upon one point, minor
- to everyone else, that just DRIVES THEM NUTS.
- It has been a learning experience for me, as I never realized that some
- people can't SEE the color smear (not a good description of it really) that
- occurs when GEM scrolls window text, and that most don't CARE that it is
- there. I am, I guess, ultra sensitive to color, and I KNOW I am ultra
- sensitive to any 'flashing effect' (flashing cursors tend to space me out).
- Still, would you have added the feature (raster copy) so soon if I had NOT
- 'pitched a bitch'? I guess the reason I was MOST upset was that I posted the

- How much in percentage, of the ST display operations is replaced, updated,

-
- Scott,
- There is a buttonfix built into the latest versions of MultiDesk. If your
- Warp 9 CP is loading from MultiDesk, you can have the convenience of buttonfix
- with no additional overhead. If you don't have MultiDesk, I am SURE the
- CodeHeads can arrange to lighten your bank account and remedy that
- situation...
-
- Anna,
- I really look forward to re-installing Warp 9. The mouse accelerator

- keep the mouse from overrunning into the menu bar, even without 'block' on.
