  17.   This is a small document that explains in very terse terms the 
  18. differences between the TOS revisions available for ST/MEGA/STE/
  19. Mega STE/TT machines, what patches are needed for what revisions, the
  20. formats they are available in, and any notes I can think of.
  21.  
  22.   I hope this will clear up some of the confusion with the different
  23. TOS versions. If you have any questions on this document, please

  36. ROM TOS (TOS 1.0)

  39.   The original ROM TOS, this version shipped in 520ST and 1040ST
  40. machines.  It is no longer shipping in any machines.

  42.   Formats:   2 chip ROMs, 6 chip ROMs

  46. Utilities:   FOLDRXXX.PRG

  48.              FOLDRXXX.PRG will add more entries into your OS Pool.
  49.              In TOS 1.0 and TOS 1.02, the limit for the number of 
  50.              directories that you can enter is around 40. With this 
  51.              program you can extend that limit much higher. If you 
  52.              are using a hard drive, this program is recommended 
  53.              highly. It will work with all TOS versions and will 
  54.              improve the performance of your system.

  56.     Notes:   GET TOS 1.04 TODAY! TOS 1.04 is the latest version of TOS 
  57.              for 520/1040/MEGA owners. It is MUCH faster, has faster,
  58.              better disk I/O, many other improvements.

  60. MEGA TOS (TOS 1.02)

  63.   This is commonly referred to as MEGA TOS. This version of TOS fixes 
  64. some minor problems in TOS 1.0 and has support for the BLiTTER chip
  65. and Real-Time Clock chip.

  78. Rainbow TOS (TOS 1.04)
  79. -----------

  81.   TOS 1.04 or Rainbow TOS, as it is commonly known is the latest
  82. version of TOS available for 520/1040/MEGA owners. It has been
  83. available as a dealer upgrade for awhile now. It has much more 
  84. robust Disk I/O, Autorunning of GEM programs at boot up, 
  85. a fix for the 40 folder limit, and much more. Most of all is 
  86. it much faster than previous versions of the Operating System.

  88.   Formats:   2 chip ROMs, 6 chip ROMs (available as Upgrade!)

  92. Utilities:   TOS14FIX.PRG, POOLFIX3.PRG, CACHEXXX.PRG, FOLDRXXX.PRG

  94.              TOS14FIX.PRG solves some small problems in the AES (for
  95.              additional information, please see the documentation that
  96.              accompanies the TOS14FIX.PRG program).

  98.              POOLFIX3.PRG fixes a bug in GEMDOS. Documentation that
  99.              accompanies the POOLFIX3.PRG program explains (in detail)
  100.              the problem that it fixes.

  102.              CACHEXXX.PRG is a new program that adds GEMDOS buffers
  103.              to your system. The caching of data and disk directories
  104.              by GEMDOS (when this program is used) will result in 
  105.              your system running much faster! This program is highly
  106.              recommended and requires TOS 1.04 or higher for full 
  107.              benefits!

  109.              FOLDRXXX.PRG is explained above.

  112.     Notes:   Please use the utilities available and if you haven't 
  113.              upgraded to this version of TOS yet.. please consider
  114.              doing so. It's a very worthwhile upgrade.

  116.              There are some disk-based versions of _early_ developer
  117.              only releases of TOS 1.04 floating around on BBS systems 
  118.              here in the United States and abroad. Please don't use 
  119.              them! They are bad news! They have some very nasty bugs 
  120.              and have been known to corrupt data!

  123. STE TOS, Rev 1 (TOS 1.06)
  124. --------------

  126.   TOS 1.06 is the TOS version that is shipped with the 1040STE and
  127. 520STE machines. It is essentially TOS 1.04 with support for the new
  128. hardware that the STE has.

  134. Utilities:   STE_FIX.PRG, POOLFIX3.PRG, CACHEXXX.PRG, FOLDRXXX.PRG

  136.              STE_FIX fixes the infamous Desktop Medium/Low resolution
  137.              bug. The problem is that there is a bug in the desktop 
  138.              code in this version of TOS that prevents the user from 
  139.              booting into Medium Resolution. The patch program STE_FIX
  140.              will solve the problem. Once it is executed in the AUTO
  141.              folder, the problem no longer exists.
  142.     
  143.              FOLDRXXX.PRG, CACHEXXX.PRG, and POOLFIX3.PRG are 
  144.              explained above.

  146.     Notes:   This version is only available in 1040STE and 520STE
  147.              machines. It isn't available for upgrading. It won't 
  148.              work in older machines.

  151. STE TOS, Rev 2 (TOS 1.62)

  154.   This is a slightly revised revision of TOS 1.6. It fixes the POOLFIX
  155. problem in GEMDOS and the problem in the Desktop that was present in

  226. question "What problem on bootup with TOS 1.6? If that's all I've
  227. used, how can I know the difference?
