- Each issue of VOICES! will carry numerous release dates for
- forthcoming new movies on video. There will also be reviews on some
- of the best films to rent and buy from your local video dealers.
-
-
- First up this issue are reviews on the latest, and last two, releases
- in the Star Trek: The Next Generation series.
-
-
-
-
-
- SUBJECT: VIDEO
- TITLE: STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION 88
- AVAILABLE: NOW
- PRICE: £10.99 OR LESS
- FROM: WOOLWORTHS/ W.H. SMITHS AND ALL GOOD VIDEO STORES
-
-
- This is the penultimate cassette for STTNG and features two superb
- episodes - EMERGENCE and PREEMTIVE STRIKE both aprox' 44 minutes in
- duration and featuring the usual cast of Picard, Riker, Troy, Data and
- company.
-
- EMERGENCE tells the tale of the Enterprise holodeck going ape when the
- Orient Express emerges in one of Data's Shakespearian renditions - in
- this instance it is The Tempest. Naturally both Picard and Data are
- puzzled by this occurrence and our intrepid captain instructs Data to
- run a diagnostic on the holodeck systems.
-
- Strange happenings abound as the Enterprise gives the appearance of
- taking on a life of its own as strange nodules begin to appear in the
- ship's circuitry. As the Enterprise moves in and out of Warp Speed
- and sets headings for unknown destinations Picard sends in a team to
- investigate the happenings in the holodeck.
-
- It is here that our fair crew find themselves combating against
- holodeck guardians - including A Knight in Armour, a Gangster and the
- loathsome ticket collector on the Orient Express. Watch out for the
- part when Worf pulls out tickets for the party and the look on the
- ticket collectors face; brilliant.
-
- As the plot unfolds it is discovered that the Enterprise, for reasons
- unknown, is giving birth to a new lifeform; the results of which we
- sadly never find out, but all-in-all this is a classic but homely
- episode with overtones of Kirk and Co' in the Classic series.
-
-
- PREEMTIVE STRIKE is up next and can be viewed as part introduction for
- the plots to come in the new Star Trek series ( due 1995 ) called Star
- Trek Voyager - read the 'Voyager' article in this issue for further
- details.
-
- An old friend in the form of Ro Laren has just returned from Star
- Fleet after a bout of 'Advanced Tactical Training' and finds herself
- overwhelmed by the gathering of friends to welcome her home. Captain
- Picard is seen leaving Ten Forward and shortly afterwards calls Laren
- to the bridge. As she leaves Ten Forward she finds Picard waiting for
- her outside in the corridor - much to her relief for getting away from
- the party.
-
- It turns out that the Maquis ( a rebel band of Federation citizens )
- are causing problems in the demilitarized zone that exists between The
- Federation and the Cardassian Empire; briefly, when the zone was set
- up some Federation colonists found themselves under Cardassian
- occupation and vice-versa for the Cardassians - hostilities emerged
- between the colonists and armed strikes were undertaken by both sides
- against each other. The Maquis have managed to form quite an
- impressive strike group and have obtained ships, phasers and photon
- torpedoes. We now return to Picard and Laren walking along the
- corridor in the Enterprise; Picard is called to the bridge.
-
- On getting to the bridge Picard is informed that a Cardassian warship
- is under attack and requires assistance. On reaching the warship
- we find it engaged in battle with several small ships; the Maquis in
- action. The Enterprise opens fire across the bows of the Maquis ships
- and they break off attack - leaving Picard to explain this latest
- unfortunate incident to the Cardassians.
-
- Ro Laren is asked to put her newly gained skills to the test and poise
- as a renegade Star Fleet officer in an attempt to join the Maquis, and
- infiltrate their group. Hopefully, she will be able to lure the
- Maquis out in strength to attack an imaginary target and leave
- themselves wide open to attack by Federation forces - so depleting
- their numbers, and will, to carry on attacking Cardassians.
-
- The plot is intriguing and quite political in nature, but the action
- is good and the special effects people have a field day in staging the
- battle between numerous Maquis craft and Cardassian warship.
-
- As the plot unfolds we see Ro Laren being torn between duty and her
- Bajoran feelings of animosity towards the Cardassians who enslaved her
- world and killed millions of her people.
-
- For Trekkers this penultimate episode ( directed, incidentally, by
- Patrick Stewart ) will be extremely appealing and the demise of Picard
- and his crew in the forthcoming last tape in the series will bring
- rise to many a sorrowful tear.
-
- VOICES! OPINION:
-
- LOOKS: 10/10 very distinctive sleeve
- CONTENT: 10/10 up to the expected standard
- INTEREST: 10/10 even non-Trekkers could find it interesting
- V.F.M: 10/10 top notch!
-
- PERCENTAGE: 100% A good slice of futuristic entertainment.

- TITLE: STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION 89 ( LAST IN THE SERIES )
- AVAILABLE: NOW
- PRICE: £10.99 OR LESS

-
- What can I say? The end of an era has loomed and as I watched this
- final episode of an historic televison series I couldn't help but shed
- a tear. For those of you who are fellow Trekkers you will understand
- - for those who dislike the program you will never know.
-
- So, what does this final episode ( appropriately titled 'All Good
- Things' Pts 1 & 2 ) entail? Alas poor Picard and his crew are subject
- to the whims and foibles of 'Q' who has never ended the trial of
- humanity. Once again Picard is pitted against unfathomable odds when
- he finds himself flitting between the past, present and future in an
- attempt to solve the mystery of a space anomoly in the neutral zone.
-
- At breakneck speed Picard is thrust into the future where events have
- unfolded to see him as an Ambassador, but suffering from some mental
- illness; his first appearance in the future sees him tending vines as
- his father ( and brother ) before him in true family tradition.
-
- On entering the past he encounters Tasha Yar as the pilot of a
- Shuttlecraft taking him to his first encounter with The Enterprise as
- her new Captain. But events do not unfold as they actually occured
- and Picard finds himself calling a 'Red Alert' minutes after boarding.
-
- Enter the present and we have a very confused and worried Captain
- Picard as he remembers his flits between time zones. Eventually
- facing 'Q' and given the truth of the time hopping jaunts that have
- him worried and perplexed.
-
- This final chapter in the journeys of the USS Enterprise is nicely
- paced, humorous in parts and the special FX guys have a whale of a
- time playing with the Enterprise of the future - in battle against a
- couple of Klingon warships; look out for 'Admiral' Riker!
-
- As an end to an era we could have expected a little more, but after
- seven years ( seven seasons ) this two-part episode sees a fitting and
- noble end to a great institution. When you see the closing scenes if
- you still have a dry eye then you are NOT a Trekker; wonderfully
- sentimental and leaving you feeling satisfied.
-
- Now we eagerly await Star Trek : Voyager ....
-
-
- VOICES! OPINION:
-
- LOOKS: 10/10 distinctive cover presenting uniformity
- CONTENT: 9/10 could have been 'just' that little bit better
- INTEREST: 8/10 unless you watched episode 1 you could get lost
- V.F.M: 10/10 top notch!
-
- PERCENTAGE: 93% and Trekkers will 'hate' me for losing that 7%

- SUBJECT: BOOK ( TV TIE-IN )
- TITLE: THE KLINGON DICTIONARY
- AVAILABLE: NOW
- PRICE: £7.99 OR LESS
- FROM: MOST GOOD BOOK STORES & FORBIDDEN PLANET SHOPS
-
-
- The what? Yes indeed we actually have a Klingon dictionary which will
- give you the rudimentary basics for learning this unusual language.
-
- The book is by Mark Okrand ( published by Pocket books ) who developed
- this into a fully fledged language after being asked to develop speech
- for Klingons in the Star Trek films - and later the series'.
-
- Giving you a full explanation on Verbs, Nouns, Suffixes and Prefixes
- the book takes you through the Klingon alphabet - explaining the
- pronunciation of each letter - through to commonly used phrases and
- root words which will allow you to construct your own sentences.
-
- The book also has a small dictionary section which translates root
- words from Klingon to English and English to Klingon.
-
- As a language it is very forceful and requires an enormous amount of
- spit and phlegm; likened to a cross between German, Russian and Welsh
- it is not for the faint of heart. Some of the contortions required of
- the tongue will have most people giving up after half an hour or so.
-
- On its own the book fairs as well as any other foreign language
- dictionary. The best way to learn a language is to actually go and
- live with the people whose native tongue it is. Get to know their
- ways, mores and customs and then you will speak their language
- fluently enough to pass amongst them. In this instance it would be
- impossible to do this - Klingons ( as far as we know!!?? ) not really
- existing.
-
- As with all books of this type it is difficult to 'imagine' the
- correct pronunciation of a word or phrase by written explanations; you
- really need to 'hear' the word being spoken to fully understand how it
- should be spoken. To this end there are a couple of audio tapes to
- complement the dictionary - Conversational Klingon and Power Klingon
- both of which will be reviewed in the next issue of VOICES!
-
- If you are a true Trekker then this is an indispensable book to add to
- your collection. Coupled with the audio tapes you will quickly learn
- to 'get-by' in Klingon and may even become fluent.
-
-
- VOICES! OPINION:
-
- LOOKS: 9/10 nice distinctive cover featuring Klingons
- CONTENT: 10/10 well thought out and comprehensive
- INTEREST: 5/10 only for die hard Trekkers
- V.F.M: 8/10 for a limited interest book very good
-
- PERCENTAGE: 80% and die hard Trekkers will lap it up!

- SUBJECT: VIDEO
- TITLE: STAR WARS TRILOGY
- AVAILABLE: NOW
- PRICE: £10.99 OR LESS
- FROM: MOST GOOD VIDEO STOCKISTS
-
-
- There's not a lot one can say about the Star Wars films - you either
- love them or hate them. Whatever, these digitally remastered versions
- of the originals are being offered at £4 less than the original asking
- price and the quality is superb.
-
- Luke Skywalker takes us down memory lane to the memorable year of 1975
- when the first Star Wars film hit the silver screen. Hailed as a
- fantasy marvel of wizard special effects and magical storyline it rose
- to the top of the charts and heralded a new era of science fiction.
-
- These films set the yardstick by which other ( less well known ) films
- were measured by; sadly, none have surpassed the efforts of George
- Lucas and his team. But there are signs on the horizon that Lucas
- intends to complete the series by filming the first three episodes
- that take place before Luke Skywalker; Star Wars being famous for
- introducing itself as episode IV in the series - yet being the first
- on film.
-
- If you want to take a look back to the days when film makers were
- still making films of quality, or if you just want to get your hands
- on better quality vision and sound ( replacing those old worn out
- copies you took from the TV ) then you could do worse than buy this
- fascinating trilogy of enjoyable escapism.
-
-
- VOICES! OPINION:
-
- LOOKS: 10/10 smart new covers on all three tapes
- CONTENT: 10/10 digitally re-mastered and improved PAL coding
- INTEREST: 10/10 if you like Science Fiction you'll love these
- V.F.M: 10/10 brilliant!
-
- PERCENTAGE: 100% top quality entertainment at a knock down price!
