- In issue 9 of POWER the talking point was 'Which is the best paper mag and
- why?, so I thought I would reply because I thought there was no contest for
- ST Review. Once I started thinking about it, and checking it out, I came up
- with this article. It reads a little bit like a list but it's worth
- persevering.
-
- I started reading ST Review at issue 6, it had 146 packed pages, 2 cover
- disks with excellent programs comprising 19 PD and Paintpot with 6 pages of
- step by step instructions.
-
- Issue 7 - 130 pages, 2 c/disks, no PD but had Timeworks with 9 pages of
- step by step tutorial. Excellent give-away.
-
- Issue 8 - 130 pages, 2 c/disks, 11 PD progs, Cyber Studio with 9 pages of
- tutorial.
-
- Issue 9 - 130 pages, 2 c/disks, 13 PD, Cyber Paint 5 with 5 pages tutorial.
-
- Issue 10 - 122 pages, 2 c/disks, 16 PD, Cyber Control 5 pages tutorial.
-
- Issue 11 - 112 pages, 2 c/disks, 11 PD, Breakthru with 4 pages tutorial.
-
- Then came issue 12 with the newsflash stuck inside that Europress, the
- owners of ST User, had taken over. This is what the mag comprised of.
-
- Issue 12 - 98 pages, 1 c/disk, 5 PD, Video Titler with 1 page of tutorial.
-
- Okay, so it was a difficult time for everyone at both mags so you can
- understand why the content was not up to the usual standard, the mag was
- smaller and the cover disks were crap. This was not a problem because the
- newsflash that was put in issue 12 said, and I quote,'THE MAGAZINE WILL
- CONTINUE WITH THE SAME EDITORIAL TEAM AND BE ON SALE AT THE USUAL DATE NEXT
- MONTH'. If this was the case then our old ST Review will be there for us up
- to it's normal high standard in four weeks. I checked out the editorial
- team for issue 13 and this is what I found.
-
- Production Editor Heather Thurley..............GONE !
- Games Editor Mark Patterson...............GONE !
- Art Editor Gordon Barrick...............GONE !
- Designers Becky Willis.................GONE !
- Jo Winslow...................GONE !
- Ad Manager Nigel Taylor.................GONE !
- Production Remzi Salih..................GONE !
- Marketing Sarah Hillard................GONE !
- Distribution BBC Frontline................GONE !
-
- This was not all the names missing from the original ST Review list
- managers, contributors and people worth crediting in the front cover of the
- magazine but just the ones I thought would have the most say about how the
- magazine presents itself. So what was all this crap Europress was giving us
- about keeping the same editorial team.
-
- Okay so who's running the show now ?
-
- I used the November issues of ST Review and User and the December issue of
- ST Action to see who is on the production teams of all mags. It has turned
- into another long list to read through I'm afraid, but stick with it and
- while you are reading play a little game called Spot The Difference. You
- will see what I mean when you have finished.

- Now, I don't want to make any judgements on Europress or the mags they
- produce that's why this article is in this 'list type' format. In fact for
- all we know Europress may have saved ST Review from going under, but I
- think we should all think back to the ST Review we originally bought and
- compere it to the mag we are getting now. If, in truth, all we are getting
- is a differant style of ST User then we should let them know.
-
- Perhaps I have convinced myself but when I look back to my old copies of ST
- Review it was a better mag and and I am now sure that a lot of my feelings
- towards it are from loyalty to the old mag.
-
- In issue 10 of POWER a lot of support was given to ST Review it would be
- interesting to hear from those people again after they compere thier old
- mags (pre issue 12) with the new ones to see what thier opinions are.
-
-
- FOOTNOTE
- After writing this I have just seen December's issue of ST User and I have
- noticed that the Zool drawings in the Gamer section are exactly the same as
- the Zool drawings on the front cover of the November issue of ST Review. It
- seems that Europress are now just switching graphics from one mag to
- another.....come on, lets have a response here.
