- Mmmm, Mrs. Munchie eh? She sounds a bit of alright doesn't she?
- Bet you wouldn't mind going out with HER, would you now? Well,
- let me tell you a bit more about her. She's a big round blobby
- kinda thing and her whole body seems to be one big mouth!
-
- Mrs. Munchie is yet another clone of the infamous arcade hit of
- many years ago - PACMAN. It is one of the best known games known
- to mankind and hit it off first in the arcade, then making it to
- home computers, books, board games and even a cartoon. Then
- there was PAC-MANIA and PAC-LAND along with a few educational
- programs with our fat and hungry munchy friend. All those though
- are no where near the amount of clones that us lucky ST owners
- have had through the P.D scene. As with other popular classics
- such as breakout, just about EVERY programmer has had a go at
- this game. Many are pretty average though but there are a few
- that stand out and some that many would say is BETTER than the
- original. Some of the GOOD Pac-Man clones have had more on offer
- than the original PAC MAN and although the basic idea is still
- there, new ideas have been implemented such as other baddies
- other than ghosts, having traps instead of pills, having drunk
- ghosts, ghosts that do different things, bonuses which change the
- background and so on.
-
- MRS. MUNCHIE, however sticks to the original and has very little
- extras and the main difference is the different lay-outs of the
- levels. However, saying that does NOT mean that it is not a good
- game although there is room for improvement.
-
- MRS. MUNCHIE features a lot of digitised sound and some speech
- too, mainly telling you when you're game has ended. The chomping
- has been digitised and a few other effects as well.
-
- However, the digitised speech is all very good but sound can be a
- bit scarce in places and there is no sound when you eat a ghost
- or when you yourself is eaten which is ashame. There are no
- sounds when you get the pills that allow you to eat the ghosts
- and basically, the only sound while playing is the one when you
- are eating the pills.
-
- The graphics in this pacman clone are nice and clear and are all
- very colourful and very appealing to the younger generation. The
- animation is smooth although what is quite annoying is that
- moving Mrs. Munchie up and down results in much slower movement
- than going to the left or right.
-
- The collision detection is fairly good although I have played the
- odd game where I am sure that my lady friend has felt a slither
- of slime from a ghost but I still haven't died. Didn't bother me
- at the time because it was my last life but things like that in a
- game never help in the long run.
-
- Movement is generally quite responsive but can sometimes be a bit
- dodgy and swear words will be pouring out of your mouth when you
- move the joystick to the left to get out of the way of the ghosts
- but she doesn't move and you then get killed. It's happened to
- me a few times and gets really annoying.
-
- The game in general is a slightly above average clone of PAC-MAN,
- there are much better ones and much worse ones. Although MRS.
- MUNCHIE on a whole is well programmed and sticks to the original
- with lots of baddies and bonuses, there is something about the
- game (maybe it's the lack of sound) that isn't as tense as in the
- original or some other PAC MAN clones. You just don't feel as
- worried when you've got a ghost on your tail as you do in other
- clones and indeed the original.
-
- Still one for the collection and because of the child mode and
- adult mode (two difficulty modes) all ages will be able to re-
- live the good old PACMAN days.
-

- POWER COMMENT:
-
- "If PACMAN's your game then MRS. MUNCHIE does the original
- justice but doesn't quite live up to the standards of some of the
- other many clones around."
