- THIS ISSUES SELECTION OF LETTERS STARTS WITH JAKE NICHOLLS WHO HAS
- A COUPLE OF POINTS TO MAKE.
-
-
-
-
-
- Dear Bob,
-
-
- Thank you for sending me both issues of Kelstar promptly and with a big
- long letter,I like the attitude of the mag and the content is brilliant.
- I reckon you should send issue 1 into ST Format and Atari World to be
- reviewed as I`m sure they`ll give you a top mark.I think that I`d buy
- another mag if I wanted a serious mag that`s technical and stuff, but there
- are loads of them and I think that you`re well written and humourous
- diskmag would come higher on my shopping list than a serious mag.I`m going
- to spread it around a bit for you and hopefully you`ll have contributions
- coming out of your ears.Dr Bob is really funny and so is your Chit Chat.
- Well, that`s it,Happy Easter and long live Kelstar.
-
- Keep in touch,
-
- Jake Nicholls

- Enfield
- Middlesex
- EN1 3JE
-
-
- Thank you Jake for the compliments. You`re right,if I were after a more
- serious mag,I`d go for one of the others too,but of course we`re after a
- bit of a larf here at Kelstar instead. You must have read my mind Jake with
- the suggestion of a review in ST Format,I`ve been having strange difficulty
- advertising in Micro Mart, they seem to ignore my adverts totally so I
- thought I`d put a wee ad in the messages section of ST Format and while I
- was at it I sent them a copy of issue 1,so you never know, there might well
- be a review coming up.( Just hope they don`t slag me off too much ).
- Feel free to bung copies of the mag around the countryside willy nilly
- the more people you spread Kelstar to the better,we`ll get a better mag out
- of it in the end.
- I`m glad that you pointed out the bits of the mag that you liked as well,
- by doing this you`re giving me an idea of what kind of articles are being
- appreciated most.I`d urge anybody else who writes in to say what things
- they either like or dislike within the content of the magazine because by
- doing this we`ll end up pleasing more people, which is what I want to do.
- Could I just point out that Jake is a very new user of the ST,and I`m sure
- that he`d be happy to hear from anyone who has a tip or two to pass on.*Bob*

-
-
- The next letter comes from someone who may be familiar to former
- readers of Power and Stellar.
-
-
-
-
-
- BLAST FROM THE PAST
-
-
- To Kelstar and the rest.
-
- Hello again all you Atari users out there, This is the one and only Bionic
- Smurf (Lennie) back to wish you all the best and a belated happy 1996.
-
- I have been in touch with Bob in one way or another while I had an Atari
- and when I left the Atari scene.I'm here to say thank you to all who have
- inquired about me when I up and left the ST scene for my PC.
-
-
- Firstly though, I would like to congratulate BOB KELL and the launch of his
- new project the KELSTAR diskzine, as a lot of you may remember, I was a very
- busy contributor to a lot of the Atari Diskmags and even created one myself
- which I called the CLASS ADS which was more for free advertising concerning
- wants, sales on the Atari scene.
-
- I hear that some of you think that I dissapeared due to lack of support for
- the Magazine and the Atari scene,Well to answer your questionsI left the
- Atari and moved to the PC because I had been the owner of a Atari for many
- years and had just got to the end of what I wanted or could do with my
- Atari.
- My intention was to keep a little 1meg STE for my son and buy the PC for
- myself, but then when I got the PC and found that my son and I could use the
- PC for everything that I used the Atari for and much more,I decided to make
- a compltete break from the Atari scene.
-
- It is right what people say about moving forward and not backwards, and
- I have always been one for moving to new things and ideas.
- Please dont missunderstand me,I am not pulling the ST down,It was a great
- computer for me at the time but I had to move on. This does not mean that
- you wont find the ST a good computer for yourself and have many a good
- time with it.I like to produce things for others to use such as new clipart
- or reading material and it got to the stage that there just was not enough
- custom on the Atari scene to justify staying with it.
-
- I have had a few personal problems in the last six months or so but I'm now
- on the way up again and I am just starting to obtain custom for my clipart
- for use with the PC along with other ideas that I have just got going.
-
- I really do enjoy using the PC, I do very much the same with the PC as I
- did with he Atari, the only thing different is that there are lots more
- software to be had and lots more people to be in contact with.I have already
- become very good friends with a lot of Shareware libraries and if anyone out
- there wants FREE PC shareware, then I'll be only too happy to help them out.
- I will also be starting to supply Bob Kell with some brand new clipart from
- my own production and it will be for use with the Atari, so keep in touch
- with Kelstar for further developments in the near future.
- You see, I have not totally given up on the Atari, I just needed a little
- time to sort things out and get settled down with the PC.
- I'm also hoping that I will be able to provide some articles for Kelstar
- and will still be here to help you if I can in any way with the Atari scene.
-
- I hope that you are still reading this even though I have dribbled on for a
- long time now, but I would like to say to Bob of Kelstar............. Well
- done Bob, your writing of articles has very much improved over the last six
- month or so, I would also like to thank Bob for sending me the TEXT and DOC
- file from Kelstar diskzine for me to read and I hope he sends them each time
- from each magazine.
- My PC is able to read such files and I like to see how the Atari scene is
- progressing and if I find that there is still a market out there for my clipart
- or whatever, then ask Bob for more of it and I'll do what I can for you......
-
-
- LAST WORDS TODAY.
- Hello to Keith Funnybun of Bun PD, you thought that you'd got rid of me,
- well I may not be built like Arny, but I'LL BE BACK. (hi keith).
- and all others who know me.
-
- I may well have sent Bob a Disk of new clipart with this letter, so if you
- ask him nicely, maybe he will send you a copy,I always found that the SPEED
- OF LIGHT art converter for the Atari a very good one to use when looking at
- clipart from the PC.Bob informs me that he has this program so if you dont
- have it already, then ask Bob.If you want more new clipart in B/W or Colour
- then tell Bob, dont just sit there waiting for more to come out because if
- I get no response,I will not create any more and waste my time.I am very busy
- with my PC.
-
- Thats about it from me so all the best and maybe I'll write again soon.
-
- from the Bionic Smurf
- ( Lennie ).
-
-
-
- Well,as the man says, there are a growing number of Gif piccies arriving
- from Lennie and if anybody would like some, then all they have to do is
- to send me a disk and an SAE and I`ll send it to you post haste.I know
- that a few of you may have been left hanging a bit when Lennie went off,
- but I think he`s being very up-front when he admits to having had some
- problems of a personal nature and he is now getting himself sorted out
- and I for one am happy to welcome him back.( There are far more important
- things in life than computers after all ).
- When Class Ads came on the go,I was all for it and hopefully did a little
- in the way of supporting it.I`m glad to se that Lennie now is returning
- the courtesy and I hope that he has some time in the future to come up
- with some articles for Kelstar.*Bob*
-
- Errr,I may have been a bit naughty here but Keith wrote to me on the
- same day as I received this letter and I gave him a copy of it.In the
- normal course of events I would have left his reply until the next
- issue but what the hell, here`s his reply, batten down the hatches and
- fetch the tin hats Daphne.
-
-
-
- Dear Smurf,
-
- Hello.
-
- How about this for an early response to your letter then?
-
- How the hell are you?
-
- It's a bloody shame POWER folded, coz my last letter to you was a blinder.
-
- I'm not going to start another ongoing saga with you.
-
- Hang on a minute!!!
-
- What am I talking about? Of course I'm going to start on you, why else
- would I be writing this letter?
-
-
- Coo, you must have a really good PC, coz you can read TXT & DOC files with
- it, how immpressive that must be!
-
- Why the PC though, I know that it's more powerful and can play pretty
- games but what else, don't give me a list, coz I know what they can do, I
- use 4 pentiums, a 486 and a 386 at work and my mate has one as well, what
- a boring bloody life he leads now he has left his STE.
-
- Mind you it sounds like your trying desperately to re coup your losses by
- selling your Clip Art to some sad PC suckers.
-
- Ooo hang on though, you can get proper Internet access with a good PC
- can't you, I've news for you PC owners out there about that too, the Falcon
- with 4 meg gets better access times than any PC on the market even with a
- slower modem! And that I can prove!
-
- So, Mr Smurf, welcome back to the world of the Atari, which as you can
- see didn't die just because you buggered off like you seemed to think it
- would.
-
- Ok, that's enough for this issue, and I look forward to your reply, should
- be good for a laugh, mind you it'll probably take you some time to get
- someone to help with the longer words.
-
-
- Hear from you again, mind you doesn't matter if I don't.
-
- Bye Bye!
-
-
-
- Keith Hunnybun.
-
- P.S. Many thanks to BOB for sending me the little blue gits letter in
- advance.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Sorry people,I just couldn`t resist.*Bob*
-

- POST BAG
- ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
-
-
- Dear Bob,
- Issue 2 of Kelstar is great. You certainly seem to
- have got the content of your diskmag spot on,with something for everyone.
- The first issue was good so the second had to go some to beat it but you
- managed to do just that.Anyone that has yet to get hold of a disk mag is
- certainly missing out.You obviously enjoy putting it together and I Hope
- you continue to produce the mag for a long time to come yet.Look forward
- to the next issue very much.
-
- Best Regards
- B.G.SHEPHERD.
-
-
-
-
- Thanks Brian for those remarks,I`m glad that you enjoy the mag and off
- course I`m very glad that you have taken the time and trouble to both
- write this letter and also contribute several other articles in this
- issue. You`ve most certainly grasped the whole point of Kelstar, that is
- for a group of like minded people to get together on a project that is
- rewarding for everyone.I`d like it to become like a conversation between
- a group in a pub,a few gags,a few witty stories and some general chat
- on some subjects that everyone can relate to.By your contributions and
- that of others you`re helping me to achieve just that.*Bob*
-
-
-
-
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
-
-
-
- Dear Kelstar
-
-
- I have just recently aquired issues 1 and 2 of your mag and I have just
- stopped laughing.I think that your stories of your friends and their
- various mishaps are absolutely hilarious and if I had a pal like Eric I
- think I`d have to shoot him,he cannot possibly be real.
-
- Where do you get your ideas from for your articles ? you must be one of
- the strangest people I have ever happened across,*( Err,thanks,Bob )*
- Too may of the ST mags concentrate too much on supposedly serious stuff
- that in the main we`ve heard a hundred times before. There`s only so many
- times that we can listen to some doom-monger whittering on about the
- demise of the Atari. The Atari ST is at the stage where the amount of
- people using one will not change much. For every person that goes on to
- the PC another will buy an ST because it is cheap and easy to get hold off.
-
- I have access to a PC and it is a truly great piece of kit,on the other
- hand the ones that we use are probably in the region of £2,000 each so
- unless I get a job with a rather nifty salary then I for one will look
- for something that I can buy cheaply, replace cheaply if they go wrong and
- get add-ons for cheaply too. With the current price of second user ST`s at
- around £50 to £75,it is cheaper to replace a dodgy ST than it is to have
- it repaired.
-
- I have only one complaint Bob about your mag, sorry, but it is the motoring
- section. One of the passions of my life is motoring.I do not have my own
- car but have the use of my fathers and over the years since I`ve passed my
- test I have always been in there with him when he buys a new car.I have
- therefore had plenty experience of new cars, something which I think
- Mr Ellis doesn`t.In issue 1 he seems to believe that the Fiat Brava and
- Bravo are good and sporty.I have driven both of these cars and find them
- as sporty as a carthorse with piles. The " Italian styling " on the facia
- comes direct from that famous Italian town " Formica ",and if you threw
- any of these around a country road ,you`d soon end up in a country ditch.
- He goes on then to claim that he cannot tell the difference between the
- Vectra and the Cavalier, well I suppose if you don`t know much about style
- you wouldn`t would you.
-
-
-
-
- Lawrence Hutton.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Thank you Lawrence for that little lot,and I`m very glad that you like
- most of the articles in the mag.I`ve had quite a few people mentioning
- Eric lately and yes he is a genuine guy and I reckon that even I
- didn`t realise what a gimboid he was till I started thinking about all
- of the stuff that we`ve gotten up to over the last 25 years.I could
- literally fill a disk with reminisances about our formative years and
- I reckon I`ll do another article on him in this issue before it goes
- out so check the comedy section Lawrence.
- I`d have to say though that I know not what either you or Bill are
- talking about with the motoring stuff as I don`t have a car myself and
- I don`t really enjoy driving all that much.If you want though you
- could do a little article yourself on cars or whatever, give us an
- alternative opinion.
- Thanks again Lawrence for the compliments and stay tuned to Kelstar
- for more upcoming rib-tickling articles.*Bob*

-

-
-
-
- Next up is John, and he`s not a happy chappy.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Hello Bob
-
-
- I`ve just read issue number two of Kelstar and although I enjoyed it
- in the main I feel that I should speak out in defence of Atari ST
- games which you had a go at in your " Are ST Games Crap " article.
- I myself own over 100 original Atari games and I enjoy playing them
- all immensely. One of my favourites is an oldie called Wizball which
- you used as a comparison with the CBM 64 version.I must admit that I
- have never seen the Commodore version but must cast some doubts on
- whether a 64K machine could possibly do better with a game than the
- Atari.Could it be that you picked this for an example as it is indeed
- such an old game that you thought no-one would be able to make the
- comparison themselves.I would ask you to compare games such as
- Zool,Cannon Fodder,Stardust,Another World,Secret of Monkey Island or
- Robinson`s Requiem, games which are by no means new releases but have
- capabilities way beyond the humble CBM 64.Software is still being
- written for the ST,albeit on a small scale, and these games take even
- more beating, coming more into line with the cartridge consoles. The
- great pity with Atari games over the years is that pirating them has
- been so easy that the producers of these games probably did not think
- it was worthwhile to put that extra bit of effort into the programming
- as they`d know that as soon as they were released then the crackers
- would be hard at it and their games would be of little commercial
- value after a short period of months.
- This leads me onto my second point which is the pirating of
- software.Ron Brown almost advocated the pirating of software in the
- last issue claiming that he and his friends bought games between them
- and then copied up the amount of games required for their group. This
- is one of the reasons,if not the main reason, why the ST is no longer
- attracting the kind of commercial support that it once did.Why should
- anyone want to take great wads of their money to develop a game and
- then have their profits taken away from them by idiots like Ron Brown
- and his like who seem to take perverted pleasure in ripping off other
- peoples work.I have almost given up on my fellow ST users as whenever
- one now gets a new contact, one of the first things that is invariably
- offered for sale or swap is " Menu Disks ",otherwise, pirated and
- illegal software. When it is so obvious who these " crews " are that
- are hacking away at the games scene why is nothing done about it.There
- seems to a be basic problem in the phrase " ILLEGAL ACTIVITY ",the
- people who crack the commercial games and circulate them should be
- reported to the police and dealt with accordingly. If this had been
- done as a matter of course from the start with floppy disk
- software, the Atari would probably still be in production now,and there
- would be literally thousands of games to choose from as it would be a
- very worthwhile proposition for companies to produce games for our
- system. It would also have prevented the coming of the Sega an Nintendo
- consoles which took the games market that should have belonged to the
- Atari and Amiga.
- I hope that you will include this letter Bob as I feel that there
- should be an alternative opinion to your own shown in your magazine.
-
-
- Yours Fathfully
-
- John Mackay
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Ooeerrr, where to start.Well firstly John I`d stick by my opinion that
- the C64 games do stand up to the ST games in some instances.I used the
- Wizball comparison as I`d just seen the ST version and was hugely
- disappointed having been a fan of the game on the Commodore. You`d have
- to ask someone with a lot more technical knowledge than me for the
- reason but I assure you that both the graphics and the sound,( especially
- the sound ),are much better on that particular game on the C64.I take
- your point about the newer games though and from your suggested list I
- have only ever played Stardust on the ST and was very impressed with
- it so I guess that`s a point to you there.
- You`d have to argue some though to make comparisons between the ST and
- the consoles though John. The reason that I don`t have any commercial
- games for the ST is that my lad has a Mega Drive and that is where I
- like to do my game playing.I`d ask you to take a look at the games
- you`ve mentioned yourself on both the ST and the Mega Drive and then
- see what you think.Just try playing Lemmings on the Atari and then on
- the Sega,I assure you there`s no comparison. The argument against
- consoles was usually the price of the games but now with the advent of
- the CD consoles the cartridge prices have dropped through the floor.
- Even the high street prices are now getting under £20 for pretty new
- games and if you check out the mags you`ll find mail order prices are
- even lower.
- The copying of software is one of the never ending battles of computer
- ownership.Yes it`s both illegal and immoral to copy stuff, but it does
- go on and has gone on for donkey`s years. As you rightly say if every
- case had been reported in the same way you`d report a burglary or
- mugging, there would not be the amount of it that there is.However, when
- the prices of new games were £30 or £40 and guys were offered copies
- for nothing it`s hardly surprising that it took off so much.My own
- opinion is that if floppy disk games had kept to under a tenner then
- there wouldn`t have arisen such a large problem.Even now more than ten
- years on lots of games are selling for £20 odd and they just are not
- worth the money when you see what is available as an alternative as
- both equal in price on consoles or much cheaper in shareware or
- PD.Starioland for example is £19.99 as far as I know, and yet you can
- buy the Sonic series of games for the Mega Drive for the same or
- less,and really,there is no comparison.
- Thank you very much for your letter though John,as you say my opinion
- is not the only one that counts and if anyone else has an opinion on
- this subject then I`d very much like to hear from them.*Bob*
