- Oh dear, it's only my first issue and already it's moan time...
-
- Here goes nothing:
-
- When sending me any disks can you please, please, please write the
- following, preferably near the TOP LEFT of your envelope:
-
- -- MAGNETIC MEDIA: DO NOT BEND OR X-RAY --
-
- It used to be standard pratice for the post office to ask you to put this
- recommendation on, but nowadays they tend not to bother too much, which
- sadly means that out of every, say, 30 disks I get, 5 or so are unusable.
-
- What happens is the guys at the sorting office spot a bulky package,
- and think "I, I what have we got here - bombs, drugs, etc" and send it
- off to be X-rayed or played football with.
-
- After all they're your disks your risking, why not protect them?
-
-
- A second, and perhaps more important moan, is can you all make sure that
- any disks you send me have been VIRUS CHECKED, or preferably have some
- sort of VIRUS BLOCKER in the bootsector.
-
- I personally favour the visual deterrant (FCOPYPRO will do just fine)
- so that I can see as soon as a disk boots, that it's bootsector is clean.
-
- I had a rather viscious virus sent me the other day, and my usual virus killer
- was away being fixed, so I couldn't tell which one it was.
- I do use several backups though (Jedi Virus Kicker 3 bootsector spotted
- that it had "pinched" the reset vector, a naughty virus trick), and a
- little beauty called SHADOWS MEMCHECK reported that it had grabbed several
- different disk pointers, so that it could copy itself onto my disks.
-
- When I checked with a PD virus killer, it had even copied itself onto PROTECTED
- disks, so it was definately a virus.
-
- I zapped it off, and had to check every disk I had used the night (only the
- write protected ones didn't have the bledder on them).
-
- In hindsight, I suppose I should really check every disk that arrives here,
- but I must admit I get very lazy over this aspect of computing, and seem to
- think that the virus will never get me.
-
- So - whilst I am 50% to blame for being a lazy so and so, please PROTECT
- YOUR BOOTSECTORS.
-
- To this end, on the second disk, there's a wonderful program called EXORCIST
- which will allow you to protect your disks with all sorts of wonderful
- virus blockers.
-
- boot it up now, and get those disks clean....
