  2.                   A Brief Review of STalker 3 and STeno 3

  8.  Since the last review of STalker and STeno in Inside Info, it is now time 
  9.  to look at the features that the new versions have to offer.
  10.  STeno 2 is a full blown word processor in an accessory. It can do just
  11.  about everything and is really convenient.  One of the neat things about 
  12.  STeno is the fact that it has menus _inside_the window and hence STeno 
  13.  has all the ease of use of a full word processor. 
  14.  
  15.      It has full cut and paste, copy to the GEM clipboard, dynamic 
  16.  communication with STalker (mentioned later). Also it has _background_ 
  17.  printing, you can set it to print and then run another program, scroll 
  18.  back through the STeno window etc etc.

  20.      By itself, STeno is a great little accessory (although it can be run 
  21.  as a program too). But with STalker, the combination is incredible.

  24.      If there is one piece of hardware I'd have to recommend to everyone, 
  25.  its a modem. There is a whole world of information and files out there, 
  26.  and for the cost of a phone call it can all be yours. To drive the modem 
  27.  and make the computer emulate a terminal, a terminal program has to be 
  28.  used. In my opinion, STalker 3 is the best!
  29.  
  30.      STALK_A.PC3 is a picture of STalker and STeno sitting on my NeoDesk 
  31.  top. It should be noted that both are NeoDesk accessories and hence can 
  32.  be "installed" onto the NeoDesktop. STalker too, has menus inside its 
  33.  menu and at the time has using a monospaced  GDOS font called TMAIL ANSI.

  35.      A quick overview of its features are:
  36.  
  37.      * Protocols supported : auto start (on download and upload) 
  38.        X, Y, Y-G, Zmodem with recovery and time/date size comparing (you 
  39.        configure the mode for the Zmodem transfer)
  40.  
  41.      * Terminal Emulations : VT-52, VT-100, PC-ANSI (flashing character
  42.        displayed as light)
  43.  
  44.      * Can address the Serial Port, Printer Port, Midi Port, all the TT/MSTe
  45.        serial ports, the Double Click DC-Port, Dave Smalls MegaTalk, and 
  46.        the Beckemeyer MT C-Shell ports.

  48.      * Has a complete advanced Scripting Language called BackTALK, it is
  49.        structured, block orientated language inspired by "C" with more 
  50.        than 130 built-in functions and commands.
  51.  
  52.      * Uses GDOS fonts if GDOS installed (use the TMail point9 from Rufus 
  53.        and get beautiful 80 column PC-ANSI on an SM-124).

  55.      * Cut and Paste via Atari's text clipboard
  56.  
  57.      * Programmable AutoDialer for up to 30 numbers
  58.  
  59.      * 20 user-definable function keys
  60.  
  61.      * Virtual screen size (with scroll bars) of 24-2000 lines by 40-200
  62.        columns.

  64.      * BBS 'remote access' mode
  65.  
  66.      * Can use STeno as a capture buffer, type ahead buffer and ASCII uploads.

  68.      * Can operate as a GEM program or as an _accessory_!
  69.  
  70.      * As an Accessory _everything_ can operate in background! I mean I've
  71.        opened STalker, asked it to dial a BBS, closed the window, went 
  72.        to run some other program and STalker will continue to redial, 
  73.        log you on and then let you know of the success, open the window 
  74.        choose to download a batch of 400K of files started the transfer 
  75.        closed the open and continued inside my other program. If you had 
  76.        a BalkTALK script which logged you on, collected your mail into 
  77.        STeno, and downloaded the latest Files listing and then log you 
  78.        off, all this would be done in background while inside another 
  79.        program...!

  81.      * If you have more than 1 serial port then you can have multiple 
  82.        STalkers addressing different BBS's with different modems 
  83.        simultaneously and in background.

  85.      * Acts as a NeoDesk accessory (install it on your desktop)

  87.      * Plus its fully configurable (with multiple config files).

  91.  Well what can I say, I could rave about STalker 3 all day but 
  92.  hopefully this review has wet your appetite. One of these days I'll 
  93.  going to bring in my modem and demonstrate logging onto ACE BBS 
  94.  using STalker.

  96.      If you are considering buying a modem - do it! You won't regret it! 
  97.  And at the same time, seriously consider STalker 3 as your terminal 
  98.  program!
