  3.           THE SOUND IS DEAFENING..........

  6. Having saved enough money to buy me a super new Mega STE 
  7. only to find out that Atari still had not learned from 
  8. the past... The fan inside this Mega STE is so loud it's 
  9. actually deafening... Roooaaarrrrr...
  10. But ok, it's possible to live with that, if your already 
  11. deaf... But when you are trying to make some decent 
  12. music with this machine nothing is so irritating as a 
  13. loud fan.

  15. I looked over some magazines and found several solutions 
  16. for the 'loud fan problem' most of them involve 
  17. electronic or handcraft skill to install.

  19. But on Sunday the 26th of January  when I was in 
  20. Eindhoven at the Atari Benelux Expo, I found the perfect 
  21. solution:

  23. A fan with built in thermocontroller called:  PC-Demper
  24.  
  25. The price is fairly high at first sight (79 Dutch 
  26. guilders) but compared to the external electronics you 
  27. need with an ordinary fan it's not so bad. And you get a 
  28. very high-tech fan indeed !!

  30. Here are some basic facts: (quoted from the manual!, Yes 
  31. you get 6 pages of manual with this fan)

  34. This fan offers a superb 'easy-to-fit' solution for most 
  35. of the Personal Computers around. With most of the 
  36. computers the noise is produced by the hard-disk and the 
  37. fan of the power supply. Nowadays as hard-disk get 
  38. quieter, the fan is most the most audible noise source. 
  39. A lot of computer users don't notice the noise anymore 
  40. as they get accustomed to it. Nevertheless, loud noise 
  41. still has it's impact on the human body. You loose 
  42. concentration and get easily tired. Expecially in 
  43. offices with more than one computer the PC-Demper can 
  44. make a big difference.

  46. The PC-Demper or Thermo-Fan is the best solution for 
  47. this problem: it's a fan which varies it's speed 
  48. according to the temperature of the inside of the 
  49. computer, when temperature rises, the fan spins faster. 
  50. Ok, this fan isn't noiseless but then again, which fan 
  51. is ???

  56. The PC-Demper has two special features, first it's built 
  57. in a very special way so it produces a lot less noise.
  58. The motor of the fan is a fully static system without 
  59. brushes or collector. The blades of the fan are unlike 
  60. most of the fan blades of other brands, aerodynamically 
  61. designed, the housing of the fan is also constructed in 
  62. such a way that the air flow is never obstructed.
  63. The bearings of the fan are of the 'ball' type, and the 
  64. whole fan has a expected life of over five years of 
  65. continuous runnig (50.000 hours)!

  67. Second it has built in electronics for controlling the 
  68. speed of the fan according to the temperature.So it's 
  69. the best of both worlds. No hasle with printed circuit 
  70. boards which have to be mounted somewhere in the case of 
  71. the power supply with sticky tape or something, it's all 
  72. in one piece.

  74. Installing the fan is quite easy, just remove the olde 
  75. fan, install the new fan, cut the wires of the old fan 
  76. and connect the wires of the PC-Demper with the supplied 
  77. connecting blocks. A screwdriver and a pair of pliers 
  78. will do the job.
  79. You can choose to use the connecting blocks ('Scotchlock 
  80. UY connector) or solder the wires together, both ways 
  81. are possible, the package contains two connecting 
  82. blocks, but also 'shrinking tube' to isolate soldered 
  83. wires. You even get two so called 'Tie-Wraps' to bundle 
  84. exessive wires together. Two rubber strips are supplied 
  85. to fill in the space between the fan and the case if 
  86. your old fan was a little more 'heavy-weight'.

  88. If you accidently change the red and black wire, it will 
  89. do the fan no damage, it just doesn't run...
