- <f1><c000> Viewing PDF on Atari <f0>
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - -- --
-
- There are many document formats flying across the internet. Most of them are
- HTML, but some of them are PDF.
-
- PDF (Portable Document Format) was developed by Adobe. It was developed with
- portability in mind, but documents should look the same way everywhere. The
- common problem with HTML is that they look 'almost' the same, while for some
- purposes document must look 'exactly' the same.
-
- For a long time, our platform was missing a decent PDF viewer. The first effort
- to develop such a viewer was GemGS, based on Alladin Ghostscript. It works wery
- well (as the whole rendering engine is taken from unix version) but has a few
- disadvantages: it is slow, requires lots of memory and has a bit out of date
- GUI. Moreover development of it has ended and the most recent version used
- Alladin Ghostscript version 6.05, while the last available upstream has major
- number 8.
-
- The second take for a PDF viewer is Xpdf. It was not developed for Atari
- platform in mind, but a generic Unix enviroment. It has the same disadvantages
- as GemGS and is even more memory hungry, and requires X-server, that limits its
- use to the FreeMiNT-MiNTNet enviroment which is too complicated for some users.
- One good thing that may be said for it: it has quite nice GUI.
-
- The third take is Porthos. This babe has it all: it is much faster than other
- versions, has a modern GUI and works under all TOS clones. Its main
- disadvantage is that it is commercial, while all other PDF viewers for Atari
- (and most for other platforms) are free. Moreover it has problems with some PDF
- documents, which is (for me) not acceptable in a commercial product.
-
- So, is there a any good solution for Atari users to view PDF files?
-
- Yes it is: <link=pic43.scr>MyPDF.</l>
-
- <link=pic43_2.scr>MyPDF</l> is a baby that has two fathers: Eric Reboux and Rafal Kawecki. Eric is
- responsible for GUI, and from his other programs we can believe that it will be
- outstanding. Rafal Kawecki is responsible for everything else (PDF parsing,
- unpacking, rendering, etc.)
-
- The project has been started some time ago, and the good news is: this time was
- not wasted. Both Eric and Rafal were working hard to develop a decent PDF
- viewer for our platform. Recent versions show a very nice GUI, and a very fast
- PDF renderer.
-
- For now, PDF can render most PDF files properly, with images and vector
- graphics. There are still some features missing, but Rafal is working very hard
- to make his PDF renderer perfect.
-
- Concerning speed , <link=pic43_3.scr>MyPDF</l> beats all other programs available for Atari.
-
- At this moment, the whole renderer is written in C, but some time-critical
- routines (like unpacking) will be rewritten in assembler. MyPDF will become
- even more roboust.
-
- When can expect we first public beta? I bet around the time its ready ;)
-
- Rafal says:
-
- About PDF itself. Well, the longer I'm working on <link=pic43_4.scr>MyPDF</l> the better I see that
- PDF is not a perfect solution, specially on slower machines. Despite this we're
- working hard on this project about two years with 6 months break at the
- beginning of this year. And it's still not ready - someone can ask why? It's
- not so easy to answer - but imagine the documentation has almost 700 pages,
- plus many other descriptions. And all this we should implement. It's really
- hard work. The other thing is that we're not working on this every day, since
- we have also to earn some money ;) But I hope to make a first beta release this
- year! And then you'll see that MyPDF will be a really good product with many
- features, super GUI etc. etc.
-
- Just be patient :)
