- ----------------------------------------------------------------- -- - --- ----
- creator of the legendary and unforgettable game project for the Atari Jaguar!
- causing strong heartbeats in player's chests all over the globe!
-
- overnight star interviewed by Grey / Mystic Bytes
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- Chosneck: Andrew, how would you describe your role, not only do you make
- computer game entertainment, but you've worked alongside the worlds
- top book authors, your on first names terms with people such as
- Arthur C Clarke and also made movies for a living. How do you
- encompass all of that into one role?
-
- Andrew: Primarily I actually class myself as a conceptual designer. I have
- ideas for themes and worlds and translate them into various
- entertainment mediums. Sometimes its whole new worlds and characters
- directly from my own imagination, other times I work with other
- authors and their themes, such as working with HR Giger on projects
- such as "Darkseed" and "AvP". I taught myself various skills such as
- computer programming and CGI techniques and this often means that
- I can also develop products directly myself.
-
- Chosneck: Talking of Alien Vs Predator, it made you an overnight star in the
- Atari world with millions of copies still being sold to Alien fans
- around the world. How do you view your relationship with the Atari
- community?
-
- Andrew: I can say in all honesty that the Atari version of AvP was the
- most rewarding product I have ever developed because the community
- of Atari fans and user groups took me to their hearts and invited
- me into "the family" something that I am very grateful for, with
- that relationship continuing to this day as this interview itself
- pays testiment to.
-
- Chosneck: Was AvP your first atari product?
-
- Andrew: Actually no, I had developed a number of Atari ST games over the
- years. I had the good fortune in that all of them sold very well and
- I garnered a large stack of awards for them. AvP was my first title
- for the Atari console though, but on the ST I collaborated with my
- friend Mike Singleton to produce the Midwinter series. That
- particular series of titles won various awards such as strategy
- title of the year and was Microprose's biggest selling franchise in
- Europe for many years. I also worked on a number of ST titles whilst
- at Graftgold which hit the charts too.
-
- Chosneck: What got you started in all this?
-
- Andrew: When I was about 13 I was told at school that I had both a very
- active imagination and a creative flair for writing. I decided there
- and then to make use of those skills and often thought up worlds and
- characters and scenarios at home after school. That became the basis
- of my early work and some people must have liked what I was doing as
- I was offered a job as a designer straight out of school when I was
- 16. It is what Ive been doing ever since. I get paid to use my
- imagination everyday when for most people imagination is only used
- when filing their tax returns!.
-
- Seriously, Seriously, lucky and I love what I do.
-
- Chosneck: I see that you have started a website, whats the rationale for that?
-
- Andrew: I have been getting a steady stream of requests from people for some
- time now to have a repository where they can research all of my
- work, regardless of medium, and certainly for the games side to be
- able to look up hints and tips. The website is in response to that
- and will grow and grow in response to requests.
-
- Chosneck: I see on the website that your wearing tights or stockings in all
- the photographs and that you endorse WeLoveColors.com as your
- provider of those. Whats that about? Its obviously a very unusual
- step.
-
- Andrew: As you probably know games programmers of both genders tend to wear
- tights quite heavily, as they are practical for the demanding
- lifestyle required. To give you an example during the testing phase
- of Alien Vs Predator I was expected to stay in the testing suite
- for three weeks and even sleep there on a temporary bed as the game
- was in 24hr/day test! It was great if an error needed fixing during
- the day, but if one was found during the night I would be aroused
- from my sleeping bag and had to dash straight to the keyboard.
- My food and laundry was brought to the testing suite to me and they
- even had a shower cubicle there. Its not exactly comfortable to keep
- dashing to and from a sleeping bag in trousers, ever tried sleeping
- in trousers! This regime has been pretty standard for the last few
- weeks to final production of all my games, living in the testing
- department virtually nailed to a chair or sleeping bag for weeks on
- end. Can you also imagine how cold it gets in the middle of the
- night in a huge office building blasting aircon, when theres only
- you and a handful of testers and a night guard!
-
- As this has been a regular part of my life since 16 years old its
- natural that tights became a regular part of my wardrobe. In the end
- I didnt even bother taking pants and shoes to work and just turned
- up in shorts and tights as it was easier. It became a trademark.
- A lot of developers do it, but as I gained "fame" I guess I get
- noticed more and it became associated with me. I grew to like
- wearing them because of my lifestyle of work, like I say it became a
- trademark and thus they became "everyday" wear for me rather than
- just for that 3-4 months a year I spend in testing and post-
- production suites. The link with welovecolors.com is a simple one,
- I love their products, I wear them all the time and when they found
- out I became official endorser of their products.
-
- Chosneck: I also heard that you dont wear shoes, is this true?
-
- Andrew: Another legacy of my sleeping bag to keyboard lifestyle I guess, but
- yes its true. The nearest I get to shoes now is putting a white
- ankle sock on one of my tighted feet as a "replacement" for both
- shoes.
-
- Chosneck: I actually think now that its so taken for granted in the Atari
- community, that if you dressed any other way you wouldnt be
- recognised. Talking of your days and weeks in the testing suite at
- Atari, was this at Atari HQ in Sunnyvale, and if so, how did you get
- on with the Tramiel family, owners of Atari Corp?
-
- Andrew: I get on enormously well with the Tramiels and have a great respect
- for them. I will let you into a little secret, once final testing
- was complete for AvP after I had sweated in "the test tank" for a
- few weeks Sam Tramiel came up to me, gave me a large sum of money,
- the keys to his brand new sports car and told me to take 2 months
- touring in his new car on his dollar as a thank you for my work!.
- Sam has even flown across and visited my house in the UK where
- he is a welcome visitor.
-
- Chosneck: Apart from your time in the test cycle, what was the toughest part
- of the AvP development?
-
- Andrew: That is easy, accuracy and feel. I really wanted the world to mimic
- the world of the Alien movies on the big screen, to be accurate down
- to the last detail and also convey that sense of claustrophobia and
- tension from the original Alien movie. I've had letters from fans
- saying that they still often get tense and scared when playing and
- that they often get taken by surprise and jump when playing with the
- lights off!. Its very rewarding that I feel that my attempts to
- capture that atmosphere paid off, but it was the single hardest
- thing I had to do in the whole design and development. Atmosphere
- and suspense is an intangible, something you cant just set a slider
- for more or less of, its a state of mind generated by the
- environment triggered by many cues, as such it is the single hardest
- thing to achieve.
-
- Chosneck: Well you certainly achieved it and it brought you to prominence with
- the movie industry I guess, as you followed up your work for Atari
- by becoming a senior creative executive at Metro Goldwyn Mayer
- didn't you?
-
- Andrew: Yes, your right, I went to MGM after they noticed what I had been
- doing with movie licences. I originally was intended to just work on
- the creative design of computer game spin-offs but my role rapidly
- evolved into working on the movies themselves too. I had a ball
- working on everything from the latest James Bond movies to Stargate.
-
- Chosneck: And I know your success just went on and on, with more major hits
- both in movie and games. Has that affected you in any way?
-
- Andrew: To be honest I just get on with each project as it comes, do my best
- with it and really try and make that project something special. Im
- not thinking about any success that may come at the end of the
- pipeline, but focus on a daily basis on that days needs for the
- project. I havent changed as a person and friends tell me that Im
- still the same person that I was starting out in the industry at 16,
- maybe a little older and greyer thats all now I have hit 35!
-
- Chosneck: Thats pretty modest in outlook for someone regarded as a creative
- "superstar" around the world. Your even very well known here in
- Poland from where we spread our magazine to a worldwide audience.
-
- Andrew: I was in Poland last year, to Warsaw, my only regret is that I wasnt
- able to spend longer there. I met up with a group of Polish fans who
- treated me very kindly indeed and offered me traditional Polish
- hospitality. I was very deeply moved to find that entertainment was
- frowned upon in the dark days of the iron curtain and that many of
- my fans actually illegally imported my games at risk to themselves
- to enjoy at home. It moved me immensely that my work can bring such
- pleasure to people under such circumstances.
-
- Chosneck: Andrew, your work brings pleasure to people all over the world and
- not just Poland, thats a testiment to your skills. Long may you
- bring pleasure to people through your work and I would like to say
- that not only have Welovecolors.com found a major star to endorse
- their products but a very nice guy too!
-
- Thank you so much for your time.
