- :::: tHE BlACk LoTUS / ami scene ::::
-
- one of the most famous and respected ami demo crews!
- responsible for various ass-kicking releases!
-
-
- :::: tHE BlaCK LoTUS / atari section ::::
-
- maybe NOT that famous but surely one of the MOST PROMISING crews
- creators of the "Relics" demo released a couple years ago
- and OUTFAST - never finished demo for the QuaST party in Poland
- only a small preview of the demo was spread but... Geesus!
- WHY THE HELL WAS IT NEVER FINISHED?!
-
- arto: Well, I couldn't afford to get there...
-
- It could be surely a real ground-breaker!
-
- arto: Well, I was missing graphics, and all you saw was the framework of
- what was to be. I found that the 030 was pretty fast after all..
- I mean.. when one can beat the dsp tmapping with cpu tmapping
- using the cache to the brim.. then... its really not such a bad
- machine running at 16Mhz beating the crap out of 30-50Mhz amigas
- if u use it properly.
-
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Let's talk to Art to dig out all such answers...
-
- (heh, "someone" nice guy re-built my introduction above and
- some questions has been answered already! totally unexpected ;)
-
-
-
- Grey: Respect, Art :)
-
- aRT: restecpa man.
-
- Grey: I am so pleased that you found some spare time for this chat :) But
- before we start with the real "hardcore" stuff please throw us some
- details about Yourself. How many candles did you blow out on your
- birthday cake? :) What are ya doing aside your scenish activities etc?
-
- aRT: Well, no problem really. Well I exterminated 27 candles. At the moment
- I'm coding some stuff in aranym, working on a raytracer that hopefully
- will be ready during a year or so... erhm.. (c8 Well, I actually have
- a lot of code, and I was thinking of putting together an intro. I code
- various routs, and send them off if they beat the others routs.
-
- Grey: Tell us about your first steps on the demo scene? How did you become a
- member of this community? And how did you find out that something like
- that EXISTS at all? :))
-
- aRT: Well, I went to pre engineer school, and found that windows had a
- program called mirc, I started chatting on the channel #norway.. and
- more or less by accident wrote /join #atari and found that the channel
- really existed... and my nick was then "Hei", which is norwegian for
- hello... (c8
-
- Grey: Who's got an idea to open the "Falcon section" of TBL? Are you the
- only member who owns this machine?
-
- aRT: Well, that was tolmo... a swede.. he got kicked and then I didn't..=)
- Well, Gizmo from TBL codes most of the cool routines that DHS uses...
- which means that a lot of people probably give EVL cred for stuff he
- hasn't coded.. Well, that is life.. some get cred due to other peoples
- work (c8
-
- Grey: Did you ever try to encourage other TBL blokes from the ami section to
- do something for the falcy? What do they think about this machine? :)
-
- aRT: Well, that is possible, though I would have to convert amiga projects
- myself, which is kind of boring. Most ppl dont want to own an atari as
- it is way to hard to get a 68060 these days. They think the machine is
- cool due to the processor and that is about it. =)
-
- Grey: Your 1st debut on the Falcon scene was the "Relics" demo :) Surely not
- a "state of the art" release but a sign that TBL (one of these ami
- gods!) hit our thresholds! :) I still keep in mind what an impression
- it had on my friends... I heard words like "Wow! If they manage to do
- similar effects as these seen on the amiga, then... oh boy! it's gonna
- kick a lot of asses around!" :)) But after that 1st release we haven't
- seen anything for a long time... and we even WOULDN'T if not for
- Paranoid who spread the preview of "OUTFAST" around ;)
-
- aRT: Well, stuff will pop up... if rodolphe quickens (c8 I NEED MY CT60!
- Concerning paranoid... you are all welcome to see paranoid turned in
- tar and feathers at the next atari convention... I really hated that
- someone release a worse version than I have on my harddrive.
-
- Grey: AFAIK it wasn't meant to be spread 'coz of lack of design and many
- parts missing but... all what we've seen in it was "state of the art"
- like effects! OUTSTANDING. Just classic ami effects - run damn fast
- and smooth, neat textures and nice soundtrack! Congrats! :)
-
- aRT: You're right. Well thanks, my version is faster.. Well, I'm more
- embarassed than proud.
-
- Grey: If I remember well you were going to release this demo at QuaST Party
- in Orneta/Poland but it stalled... why's that? "Outfast" doesn't
- contain any 3D effects and I am sure we were talking about something
- like fuckin' fast "3D world"... :) What happend to it? Did you need
- some more time? Maybe some effects were lost by a HDD crash or sth?
- We've got used to such kinds of affairs on our scene :|
-
- aRT: Yup, I couldn't afford the trip. had to work - they would give me time
- off. Yup that is what lacked, though the code is still on my
- harddrive. I actually got tired of my falcon, as no friends of mine
- have such a machine. I need to belong to a coding environment, social
- activities with coders are important for inspiration, and all the
- norwegian falcon coders I know.. really sux.
-
- aRT: Well, as above... still waiting for my card.
-
-
- aRT: Yup I did. The card is ok, but it hasn't arrived yet. Well, I saw the
- circuitry and was instantly impressed... good enough for me. aranym on
- a 2.67 Ghz machine is about 60 percent as effective as a ct60.
-
- Grey: Do we dare suggest it's a "rescue" for the atari scene? Many ppl think
- it's gonna not rescue the scene but rather let it fade away... Our
- small community is divided, there is no standard set so far... Deez
- from Mind Design announced his "CT60 only" release adding he is not
- going to touch std Falcon anymore... It's so cool to see ppl going to
- make the RIGHT USE of this *EXPENSIVE TOY* and I cross my fingers to
- see some groundbreaking releases on it! But I am afraid that std
- Falcon users who are not able to collect enough coins to lay their
- hands on it will be so disappointed. What's your view on it?
-
- aRT: Well, a rescue for the atari scene, not at all. Some coders might
- code on for a few years, but as there is a lack of falcon motherboards
- one cannot see this ct60 as a rescue.. Its a toy full of fun,
- rather... Check out the atari coldfire... now that is a machine that
- doesn't stink, and it runs at 150Mhz... a bit quicker than a little
- washing machine cpu.... or fuelinjection cpu.. or whatever the ct68060
- was produced for. The atari environment needs funding to survive...
- which really means that one ought to take a piss on everyone involved
- in piracy.
-
- Grey: Can we expect any new TBL releases to shake up the Falcon scene? :)
-
-
- aRT: Well, at least one. (c8 No promises, at this stage I have some
- problems in my tracer, but I might have some time for an intro.
-
- Grey: Ok, thanx for all your answers, aRT! Good luck for the future
- projects, may aTARI spirit never leave you...
-
- aRT: Well, atari = check mate in japaneese... figure on that Tramiel..
- Mwahahahah.
-
- Thanks a lot. Right now, I am in deep financial troubles, and so
- I have to focus a little bit on that... but I will try to throw
- together some shit when the ct60 busts the mailbox. I just hope that
- I wont feel like r2d2 after coding too much.... bleeeep wouiouiouuup!
