- Review: Formula One
- ===================
-
- Another racing game. There's been Hard Drivin', Hard Drivin'
- 2, three Lotus racing games and Nigel Mansell - and now
- there's F1. OK, so I don't sound too enthusiastic. Well, I'm
- just a little fed up. I'm sitting here, it's about 500
- degrees celsius and my electric fan has worked all
- throughout the year - apart from now. Yes - I know I should
- cheer up, and I will do. Don't worry Domark, I won't give F1
- a low rating just because I'm feeling low.
-
- Formula One has been approved by FIA which means it uses
- the names of real racing champions - they're allowed to use
- Nigel Mansell, Prost and Williams' names. On loading the
- game you are presented with a title screen which is
- displayed for a short while, and then you go on to set up
- your car. Setting up is very important - it can determine
- whether you come last or first. You should think very
- carefully about how you set up a car; if the track you're
- racing on is going to be a circuit with loads of corners on,
- you shouldn't opt for the highest speed. You can change your
- tyres, gearbox and wing settings using this screen.
-
- Tyres can be hard, medium or soft. Soft tyres are brilliant
- on corners, although they wear out very quickly and you will
- need to visit the pit stops a lot. Hard tyres are very hard-
- wearing, but aren't very good at corners. Medium tyres are a
- mixture of both.
-
- Wings on racing cars are designed to keep the car on the
- ground. Yep - that's right, without them cars would take off
- with fatal consequences! There are three wing positions;
- high, medium and low. If you want to take corners well, you
- should choose a high wing. If you are on a track with lots
- of straights, then a low wing is best. Again, medium is a
- mixture of both.
-
- Then we come to your gearbox. This is very obvious.
- Automatic allows your car to control your gears for you,
- while manual puts you in control. If you're new to the game,
- or new to racing games, you should use the automatic gear.
- If you're an advanced player, try using manual - it gives
- better results providing you know what you're up to.
-
- Now, onto starting the game. You can choose from four
- options. Demo, Arcade, Championship and Training. With Demo,
- you choose a track and the computer will race around it.
- This gives you an idea of what the track is like, and
- whether you should race on it. It also gives you an idea
- where to slow down if you're going to stop at the pits.
-
- After you've taken a look at the demo of the track you want
- to play on, you should go for training. This allows you to
- go round the track several times, so you can get used to it
- without any penalties. You can choose from several tracks,
- and it's really best to go on training first. It also allows
- you to try out different settings to find out which ones are
- best.
-
- After checking out the demo and practising a bit on the
- training mode, it's time to go in for the race! The
- Championship mode allows you to race all twelve of the
- tracks or to race one on its own. Scoring is the same as in
- the real F1. In Championship its a race against time AND
- opponents. You have to qualify to get on to the next track.
-
- Arcade sees you trying to overtake opponents without any
- time limit. This is really my favourite. You have to meet a
- certain standard, and if this is met you can go on to a
- higher level.
-
- Overall, I really enjoyed F1. It had some nice sound effects
- and was pretty addictive. The graphics were also very good -
- bright and colourful. However, it can get very frustrating
- keep coming last all the time, although that might only
- happen to me!! I think that F1 is worth the £25.99 of its
- asking price, and if you're a fan of racing games, this is
- for you.
