  5. Another racing game. There's been Hard Drivin', Hard Drivin'
  6. 2, three Lotus racing  games  and  Nigel  Mansell  - and now
  7. there's F1. OK, so I don't sound too enthusiastic. Well, I'm
  8. just a little  fed  up.  I'm  sitting  here,  it's about 500
  9. degrees  celsius  and  my   electric   fan  has  worked  all
  10. throughout the year - apart from now.  Yes - I know I should
  11. cheer up, and I will do. Don't worry Domark, I won't give F1
  12. a low rating just because I'm feeling low.

  14. Formula One has been  approved  by  FIA  which means it uses
  15. the names of real racing champions  - they're allowed to use
  16. Nigel Mansell, Prost  and  Williams'  names.  On loading the
  17. game  you  are  presented  with  a  title  screen  which  is
  18. displayed for a short while, and  then  you  go on to set up
  19. your car. Setting up is  very  important  - it can determine
  20. whether you  come  last  or  first.  You  should  think very
  21. carefully about how you set  up  a  car; if the track you're
  22. racing on is going to be a circuit with loads of corners on,
  23. you shouldn't opt for the highest speed. You can change your
  24. tyres, gearbox and wing settings using this screen.

  26. Tyres can be hard, medium or  soft. Soft tyres are brilliant
  27. on corners, although they wear out very quickly and you will
  28. need to visit the pit stops a lot. Hard tyres are very hard-
  29. wearing, but aren't very good at corners. Medium tyres are a
  30. mixture of both.

  32. Wings on racing cars are  designed  to  keep  the car on the
  33. ground. Yep - that's right, without them cars would take off
  34. with fatal consequences!  There  are  three  wing positions;
  35. high, medium and low. If you  want to take corners well, you
  36. should choose a high wing. If  you  are on a track with lots
  37. of straights, then a low  wing  is  best. Again, medium is a
  38. mixture of both.

  40. Then  we  come  to  your  gearbox.  This  is  very  obvious.
  41. Automatic allows your car  to  control  your  gears for you,
  42. while manual puts you in control. If you're new to the game,
  43. or new to racing games,  you  should use the automatic gear.
  44. If you're an advanced player,  try  using  manual - it gives
  45. better results providing you know what you're up to.

  47. Now, onto  starting  the  game.  You  can  choose  from four
  48. options. Demo, Arcade, Championship and Training. With Demo,
  49. you choose a track  and  the  computer  will race around it.
  50. This gives you  an  idea  of  what  the  track  is like, and
  51. whether you should race on  it.  It  also  gives you an idea
  52. where to slow down if you're going to stop at the pits.

  54. After you've taken a look at the  demo of the track you want
  55. to play on, you should go  for  training. This allows you to
  56. go round the track several times, so  you can get used to it
  57. without any penalties. You  can  choose from several tracks,
  58. and it's really best to go on training first. It also allows
  59. you to try out different settings to find out which ones are
  60. best.

  62. After checking out the  demo  and  practising  a  bit on the
  63. training mode,  it's  time  to  go  in  for  the  race!  The
  64. Championship mode allows  you  to  race  all  twelve  of the
  65. tracks or to race one on its  own. Scoring is the same as in
  66. the real F1. In  Championship  its  a  race against time AND
  67. opponents. You have to qualify to get on to the next track.

  69. Arcade sees you  trying  to  overtake  opponents without any
  70. time limit. This is really my  favourite. You have to meet a
  71. certain standard, and if this  is  met  you  can  go on to a
  72. higher level.

  74. Overall, I really enjoyed F1. It had some nice sound effects
  75. and was pretty addictive. The graphics were also very good -
  76. bright and colourful. However,  it  can get very frustrating
  77. keep coming last  all  the  time,  although  that might only
  78. happen to me!! I think that  F1  is  worth the £25.99 of its
  79. asking price, and if you're a  fan  of racing games, this is
  80. for you.
