  11. and Norton Personal Firewall.  Note that the release
  12. notes may refer to features that are not in the
  13. product you have installed, as it covers three 
  14. products with different features.

  47. Installation with the Microsoft Installer
  48. --------------------------------------------------------
  49. The Microsoft Installer is a new component for Windows,
  50. and is required to install Norton Internet Security or
  51. Norton Personal Firewall.  If your operating system 
  52. does not already have this installed, it will automatically
  53. be added.  The MSI installer requires about 25 megabytes
  54. of space temporarily to install, but will clean up after
  55. the install is complete.  On Windows 98 Second Edition, 
  56. and possibly other conditions, the MSI installer may 
  57. need to reboot the system before Install continues.
  58.

  60. Installation on multi-boot systems
  61. --------------------------------------------------------
  62. Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall can be 
  63. used on systems that boot multiple operating systems on
  64. the same primary partition, such as having Windows 95
  65. and Windows NT both on the system.  However, if you use
  66. a dual boot system, you must install the product into
  67. different directories on each operating system - do not
  68. attempt to use the same directory, or you may have 
  69. conflicts.

  72. Installation on machines running server services
  73. --------------------------------------------------------
  74. Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall are not
  75. supported on server versions of Windows NT or Windows 
  76. 2000, but it can be installed and operated.  
  77.  
  78. Please review the technical notes on configuring the 
  79. product to support various server processes which need
  80. access to the internet during the system boot up when
  81. firewall alerts cannot show.  Please note that this can
  82. affect a Windows NT Workstation or Windows 2000 
  83. Professional installation running IIS or other server-
  84. oriented services.

  93. Blocking ads speeds up download time
  94. --------------------------------------------------------
  95. The ad blocking feature does not block all
  96. advertisements on the Internet, but it can speed up
  97. download time when websites contain several ads. For
  98. information on blocking ads not blocked by Norton
  99. Internet Security, see the User's Guide or Help.

  102. Blocking ads can block other Web elements
  103. --------------------------------------------------------
  104. Blocking ads prevents specific HTML strings from being
  105. downloaded to a Web browser. This can prevent other Web
  106. elements from appearing in the browser in addition to
  107. advertisements. It can also cause script errors on some
  108. pages. If you visit a site that does not download 
  109. properly, try disabling the Ad Blocking feature.
  110.

  116. Blocking ads blocks graphical advertisements
  117. --------------------------------------------------------
  118. The Norton Internet Security ad blocking feature blocks
  119. graphical advertisements and pictures. It is not
  120. effective against text-based or script-based
  121. advertisements.
  122.  
  123. --------------------------------------------------------
  124. Blocking applications from accessing the Internet
  125. --------------------------------------------------------
  126. Norton Internet Security restricts applications from
  127. accessing the Internet. It does not prevent someone from
  128. running the application.
  129.  
  130. When some programs cannot access the Internet, they may
  131. respond by crashing, freezing, or reporting problems
  132. with your Internet connection. The results depend on how
  133. the program was designed.
  134.

  136. Blocking cookies does not prevent cookie creation
  137. --------------------------------------------------------
  138. Blocking cookies does not prevent the cookie from being
  139. stored on your hard disk. It prevents your browser from
  140. sending the cookie when a Website requests it. Norton
  141. CleanSweep and other similar products contain features
  142. to remove cookies from your hard disk.

  145. Blocking browser type and version is off by default
  146. --------------------------------------------------------
  147. By default, Norton Internet Security does not block
  148. information about the type of browser you are using
  149. because many Web sites depend on this information to
  150. display Web pages tailored for specific browsers.
  151.  
  152. Blocking this information can cause Web page errors, or
  153. display warnings about updating your browser.
  154.  
  155. To block information about the type and version of
  156. browser you are using:
  157. 1. Open Norton Internet Security.
  158. 2. Click Options and click Advanced Options.
  159. 3. Under the Web tab, click the privacy tab and change
  160.    the Browser (User-agent) settings.
  161.  
  162. --------------------------------------------------------
  163. Blocking popup windows is limited
  164. --------------------------------------------------------
  165. The Block Script Popups Only feature blocks the most
  166. common methods Web sites use to open additional browser
  167. windows, but does not block all methods. Even with this
  168. feature turned on, you might find Web sites where pop-up
  169. windows are not blocked.
  170.  
  171. Some Web sites, such as Microsoft's Windows Critical
  172. Update, will not operate correctly when you block script
  173. popup windows.
  174.

  176. Blocking scripts only blocks scripts on Web page
  177. --------------------------------------------------------
  178. The advanced feature to Block All JavaScript blocks any
  179. JavaScript embedded in Web pages. However, it does not
  180. block JavaScript found in form objects or in external
  181. script (.JS) files.
  182.  
  183. Blocking JavaScript causes errors on Web pages that
  184. require JavaScript for proper display or navigation, and
  185. should only be used by advanced users.

  188. Creating Firewall Rules for N/A programs
  189. --------------------------------------------------------
  190. If Norton Internet Security cannot identify a program or
  191. process that is attempting to access the Internet, it
  192. displays the name of the process as N/A. If you create a
  193. firewall rule for N/A programs, make sure the rule
  194. blocks or permits the connection for a specific port or
  195. address. If you create a rule to permit
  196. or block N/A programs  for all ports or addresses,
  197. Norton Internet Security will use that rule for every
  198. program it cannot identify.

  201. Firewall alerts are cached
  202. --------------------------------------------------------
  203. Sometimes Internet-enabled applications send requests to
  204. several computers to contact your machine. If you are
  205. using the Firewall Rule Assistant, you could see several
  206. alerts. Multiple alerts are cached in Norton Internet
  207. Security. This can cause alerts to appear even if you
  208. close the original program that caused the alert.
  209. Specific examples include multiplayer Internet games
  210. like Unreal Tournament or Gamespy.
  211.

  213. Incompatibility with Regclean
  214. --------------------------------------------------------
  215. Running some versions of Microsoft's Regclean power toy
  216. can break Norton Internet Security so that it stops
  217. working properly. To fix this problem, reinstall Norton
  218. Internet Security, or undo the registry cleanup. The
  219. registry cleanup and repair functions in Norton
  220. Utilities and Norton CleanSweep do not cause this
  221. problem.
  222.  
  223. --------------------------------------------------------
  224. Passwords are case sensitive
  225. --------------------------------------------------------
  226. Passwords for user accounts are case sensitive. The 
  227. passwords abc$123, Abc$123, and ABC$123 are each 
  228. considered a different
  229. password. Make sure your passwords are consistent.
  230.  
  231. --------------------------------------------------------
  232. Permitted sites can contain items from blocked sites
  233. --------------------------------------------------------
  234. When you specify a list of permitted Websites, content
  235. from all other Websites is blocked. If a site reference
  236. graphics or other items from other sites, these items
  237. are blocked even though they appear to be from the same
  238. Web site.
  239.  
  240. These are some steps you can take to reduce these
  241. situations:
  242.  
  243. - Use domain names instead of more specific Web site
  244.   names. For example, permit the site example.com
  245.   instead of images.example.com to allow the content 
  246.   from the example domain. This allows access to all the
  247.   websites within that domain, including www.example.com,
  248.   help.example.com, images.example.com or any other
  249.   sites in that domain.
  250.   
  251. - If you are viewing a permitted site and notice images
  252.   that are blocked, open the Event Log and look at the
  253.   information under the Restrictions tab. This shows the
  254.   items that were blocked from the Web site you are
  255.   viewing. Then add the blocked sites to the permitted
  256.   list so the blocked images will appear.
  257.   
  258. These steps are only useful if you are specifying which
  259. sites are permitted. If you use the Specify Blocked
  260. Sites option, everything that does not fall into a
  261. blocked category is permitted.
  262.  
  263. --------------------------------------------------------
  264. Updating web site blocking list on older computers
  265. --------------------------------------------------------
  266. With Norton Internet Security: Family Edition on older 
  267. machines (usually with less than 48mb of RAM), the 
  268. LiveUpdate process for updating the web site blocking
  269. list can take a very long time to update (sometimes 
  270. multiple hours).  If you have a limited amount of RAM,
  271. shut down as many running applications as you can before
  272. doing a LiveUpdate, and if you do find that it takes a
  273. very long time, do LiveUpdates when you will not be
  274. using your computer.
  275.

  277. Referring address blocking is for browser only
  278. --------------------------------------------------------
  279. Although Norton Internet Security blocks the information
  280. from your browser about the last Web address you
  281. visited, it cannot block this information when it is
  282. passed from a Web server. For example, if you visit a
  283. site that refers you to another site on the same Web
  284. server, the Web server might transfer the referring
  285. information internally. This information does not come
  286. from your browser, and is not blocked by Norton Internet
  287. Security. These occurrences should not cause privacy or
  288. security concern.
  289.

  291. Restricted account users do not see prompts
  292. --------------------------------------------------------
  293. Norton Internet Security lets you enable, block, or
  294. prompt the user for various settings. However,
  295. restricted account users do not receive prompts. For
  296. restricted accounts, any item set to prompt the user is
  297. automatically blocked without warning.

  300. Showing animated .gif files after blocking them
  301. --------------------------------------------------------
  302. One of the advanced options lets you prevent animated
  303. .gif files from repeating their animation. This feature
  304. modifies incoming .gif files to prevent them from
  305. animating. To show the animation of a modified .gif file
  306. again, turn off animated .gif blocking, clear your
  307. browser's cache and revisit the Web site where you found
  308. the file so you can download it again.
  309.

  311. Terminating http connections
  312. --------------------------------------------------------
  313. Norton Internet Security lets you terminate most types
  314. of network connections, but terminating http connections
  315. requires that you close your Web browser software.
  316.  
  317. --------------------------------------------------------
  318. Web Site Blocking and Browser History
  319. --------------------------------------------------------
  320. Most web browsers keep pages in a hard drive cache to
  321. improve performance, and some browsers support "offline
  322. browsing", where they download entire web pages to your
  323. hard disk.  If these pages are viewed or downloaded by
  324. one account, they may be viewable by another account who
  325. would normally have these pages blocked with Parental
  326. Control.  Empty your web browser's cache to solve this
  327. problem.

  330. Web Browser Compatibility
  331. --------------------------------------------------------
  332. Some features of Norton Internet Security, such as
  333. LiveAdvisor and web-based subscription update, are
  334. designed for modern web browsers.  If you do not have
  335. a version 4.0+ browser from Microsoft or Netscape, you
  336. may not be able to use these features.

  338. --------------------------------------------------------
  339. Operation with Local Area Networks
  340. --------------------------------------------------------
  341. After installation, Norton Internet Security will block
  342. all inbound file and print sharing to your computer via
  343. TCP/IP networking.  This is done to close a very serious
  344. security hole many computers have with the Internet. 
  345. Please refer to the printed manual / .PDF for details
  346. on properly configuring Norton Internet Security to 
  347. work with your local area network.
  348.  
  349. --------------------------------------------------------
  350. Hiding your computer name from the Internet
  351. --------------------------------------------------------
  352. In its default configuration, Norton Internet Security
  353. allows your computer name and share information to be
  354. seen over the Internet if you have Microsoft File &
  355. Print Sharing enabled.  Norton Internet Security still
  356. prevents outsiders from accessing this data, but they
  357. will be able to get your computer name and share names.
  358.  
  359. This functionality is required for some cable modem 
  360. implementations, but is not necessary for most systems.  
  361. If you wish to prevent this information from being 
  362. accessed, you can delete the "Default Inbound NetBIOS"
  363. rule from the Advanced Options Firewall tab.
  364.  
  365. --------------------------------------------------------
  366. Uninstalling Norton Internet Security
  367. --------------------------------------------------------
  368. Norton Internet Security hooks into the network setup of
  369. a computer, and has some complex actions that must be
  370. taken when uninstalling.  It is not recommended that 
  371. uninstall products (such as Norton CleanSweep) be used
  372. to remove Norton Internet Security, and it should only
  373. be removed with its own uninstaller.  This can be 
  374. accessed from the Start Menu or from the Control Panel.
  375. Please note that a supervisor account must be loaded 
  376. in Norton Internet Security before an uninstall can be
  377. done.
