Italian harpsichord virtuoso, Dominico Scarlatti, wrote a variety of works including operas and choral music. He is best remembered for his keyboard compositions.
Here we have selected 10 of Scarlatti's sonatas that capture his peculiar, yet brilliant harmonies.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Heitor Villa-Lobos is premier among Brazilian composers. Although he lacked the discipline to complete formal music studies, he was a musician of high caliber who featured the authentic folk and dance melodies of Brazil in his works.
Here we feature Prelude 1 in E minor for solo guitar.

Mellow big-band rhumba
Rhythmic rhumba beat with a muted big-band style.
Russ Nagy, the composer of this piece, went for a mellow big-band rhumba on this project; a client had asked for a "smoke-filled room in Havana during the 40's." Russ wasn't sure if the rhumba was indigenous to Cuba, but the use of section trombone and congas certainly helped conjure up the sophistication his customer desired.

Earmarks of the 80's
Something like an 80's cop movie titles sequence.
This movie piece has got that (now passe) driving synth ostinato and percussive brass melody that made Lalo Schifrin a fortune. Utilizing more current patches and the selective application of outboard effects (e.g., slow, deep phasing on the ostinato and heavy slap reverb on the toms) would do a lot to bring this score into the 90's.
The channel assignments are as follows:
1 - Bass
2 - Clavinet
5 - Sax Melody
6 - Vibes Melody
7 - Trombone Melody
9 - Etherial sustained synthesizer
13 - Brass Stabs
15 - Various "effect" percussion

Trying not to be too urban or vanilla...
This piece is based on a 16 bar blues progression but, by using polychords instead of the traditional 7ths or 7#9s, it has some freshness to it. There isn't much that couldn't be done with this music, including action or dialog.

The note mapping information on the right corresponds to all of the "Best of MIDI" drum patterns. We have tried to conform (as much as possible) to the emerging standards in the industry, specifically the General MIDI Mode Specification.
Aram Khachaturian was an Armenian composer whose works are distinguished for their incorporation of oriental folk elements. He is best known for the ballet Gayne (1942) and its popular "Saber Dance."y
Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov was a composer of operas and orchestral works. His great operas include Mlada (1890), Christmas Eve (1895), Sadko (1896), and The Golden Cockerel (1907).
Here we present an excerpt from his fairy-tale opera The Legend of Csar Saltan, the Flight of the Bumble Bee.

Alexander Scriabin was both composer and pianist. He experimented with his own esoteric harmonies related to theosophical ideas, heard in such works as The Divine Poem (1904) and Poem of Ecstasy (1909-1910).
Here we include the first six preludes from his Op. 11, which, even at this early point in his career, show glimpses of the composer's musical mysticism.
While Igor Stravinsky is best known for his epic ballets The Rite of Spring, Petrouchka and The Firebird, he also composed many smaller works.
Here we feature two marchs from L'Histoire du Soldat, or The Soldier's Tale. It is a stage work for narrator and seven instrumentalists and typifies the composer's neoclassical period.5
One of the history's most beloved composers, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky is famous for his ballet music, including Swan Lake (1876) and The Sleeping Beauty (1889). He also wrote six symphonies and several other orchestral works which remain popular to this day.
Here we have, perhaps, his most famous work, The Nutcracker, which was inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann's story The Nutcracker and The Mouse King.
These MIDI files contain the complete orchestrations for the well-known Nutcracker Suite -- every note played by every instrument.k

Ravel (MIDI)
Maurice Ravel
1875-1937
Although his music tends to be more complex and harmonically sophisticated than that of Debussy, Maurice Ravel was one of the most important composers in France and was often associated with Claude Debussy. This is because he was not afraid to adopt musical ideas from wherever they might be encountered.
A pavane is a slow, stately Spanish dance which Ravel used as basis for this delicate and hauntingly beautiful elegy.

Camille Saint-Saens demonstrated great musical abilities at an early age, completing his studies at the Paris Conservatory at age 18. His works include 5 symphonies, 5 piano, 5 violin and 2 cello concertos, plus various other orchestral works, and numerous chamber works.
The Havanaise, Op. 83 for Violin and Piano reflects his love for the music of Cuba and Spain.

HAVANAIS.MTS 63796 03/31/93 12:43:24
"Havanaise for Solo Violin & Piano " in MTS format.
Baroque organist and composer, Johann Sebastian Bach, wrote several collections of music for the keyboard.
Here we feature his Goldberg Variations , 30 variations on a theme for harpsichord. This masterpiece was originally written to be a soporific for Count von Kayserling on those evenings when he sufferd from insomnia.
It is hard to overstate the importance of Ludwig van Beethoven in the history of Western music. His compositions bridged the great gulf from the classical to the romantic era and were the first to intimately reveal the heart and soul of the composer.
These four piano sonatas are among his most famous and span the range of the composer's style development.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began composing at the age of six and by eleven he had already composed three symphonies and numerous other works.
His output includes 49 symphonies, 23 piano sonatas, 42 violin sonatas, plus hundreds of other compositions including string quartets, divertimenti, marches, dances, fantasias, etc.
Here we feature his Sonata No. 8, K.310 for piano.
Arnold Schoenberg, best known for his origination of the revolutionary 12-tone system, wrote a variety of pieces including the Six Little Piano Pieces, Op. 19, featured here.
These pieces may be diminutive in length -- the longest, a mere 19 bars -- but they are of great significance in the history of Western music since in them we see the last attempts at pure atonality before the introduction of serial composition.
Schubert was a composer of numerous symphonies, masses, quartets and sonatas. He was most noted for his lyrical, melodic composition style in the spirit of early Romantic poetry.
Here we have one of Schubert's masterly sonatas; it provides a good example of his expansive melodies and harmonic progressions.
Francois Couperin stands as the grandfather of the modern age of keyboard composers. He taught Scarlatti, Handel and Bach and may legitimately be called history's first great composer for the pianoforte.
Because the Couperin family had produced distinguished musicians for generations, Francois is often called "Le Grand" to single him out from the others.
Here is a keyboard suite from Book 1 of the famous collection known as Pieces du Clavicin.

While the romantic movement of the 19th century masters served as his foundation, Debussy pioneered a new musical style which was reflective of the "impressionistic" painters of his day. His clever use of modes, whole-tone scales, streams of parallel chords and feather-light textures combine to create a distinctive sound.
This collection of piano works, The 2 Arabesques, Danse and The Suite Pour le Piano all serve as excellent examples of Debussy's unique style.
