Train. Richard Trevithick's steam-powered train of 1803 had iron wheels. Some people did not think that an iron wheel on an iron rail would give any grip. The basic design of a modern train wheel is almost identical to those of the early railways, with a flange on the inside keeping the wheel on the track.
