Crystal Palace. The Crystal Palace was built for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Designed by Joseph Paxton, it was the world's first, mass-produced, factory building. There were 3,300 cast-iron columns and wrought-iron girders. The building was 1,848 ft (560 m) long and 450 ft (137 m) wide.
