Back to back house. Thousands of houses like this were built by the mill and coal-mine owners and railways for their workers in the 19th century. They were true 'back to back' houses as there were only windows at the front: the back wall was shared with a house in the next street. A coal chute from the street led to the cellar. The toilet was in a block along the street.
