RELEASE NOTES - The LOOK CD-ROM Viewer Software
WHAT IS THIS CD?
This compact disc is a collection of product and service
literature from the vendors at NAB'95. We collected
their literature, scanned and OCR'd it, and put the text
and image files on the CD. The stack of paper was 21 inches
tall!
But it's not just a lot of product literature - it's a lot of
ORGANIZED product literature. You can look up products and
services by their name, their category or their company. You
can also search the text of the documents for specific words.
For instance, you can ask the software to retrieve all documents
that contain the words
3D and (Animation or Graphics)
AND THERE'S MORE!
The companies whose names are printed on the disc have included
demo programs, video clips and other cool stuff. Take a look!
MEMORY - HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?
This CD-ROM will run with only 4 megabytes, provided you run
Windows in 386 Enhanced mode with a swap file of at least 8
megabytes. Even then, some images may not display at full
resolution due to memory constraints.
Having 8 megabytes of RAM in your PC is recommended, and 16
megabytes is optimal. If you run into memory constraints
(dialog boxes that tell you that LOOK can't open an image),
try increasing the size of your Windows swap file or closing
other applications.
VIDEO PROBLEMS
If the software installs but will not run (it hangs at the intro
screen) then you probably have a video conflict in you Windows
system. The solution is to comment out the opening video clip
by editing the MIRA.INI file (located in the Windows directory).
Simply place a semicolon on the 13th line so that it looks
like this:
;AVI="mira.avi"
This will bypass the video and fix the problem.
IMAGES ARE UNREADABLE
There are two problems that cause illegible images. The most
common cause is having a 16 color display driver instead of a
256 color display driver. Go to Windows Setup and change your
driver. If you are running a 256 color driver and the images
are still to blurry to read the text, they you are running out
of memory. You will need at least 6 megabytes of free memory to
open a color image. On most systems, this means you will need
8 megabytes of RAM and a large swap file. The software will work
but it will discard a large part of the image file in order to
work within the memory constraints.
INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
Error in Script Line 142
The CD will install Video for Windows and some other files into
your Windows directory. You will need at least a megabyte free
on your Windows hard drive even if you are installing to a
different drive. Free a few meg and try again.
TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE CD-ROM
1. Use a 256-Color Video Driver
The color images and video files were composed using 256
colors. If you try to display them as 16-color files, the
software will "dither" the images to simulate the missing
colors. This dithering does two things: it slows down the
display process and decreases the resolution. For these
reasons, you should use a 256-color display for your Windows
display driver.
The standard VGA windows driver is a 16-color driver. To
change your video driver, select the Windows Setup option
under the Main program group of your desktop. Change the
Display option to be one that displays 256 colors.
Microsoft provides a 256-color version of their VGA driver;
call them and they will send it to you.
2. Install a Sound Card
All of the help screens contain talking demos, so having a
sound card really helps. Furthermore, without a sound card,
you won't be able to listen to the audio files or hear the
audio that plays with the video clips.
A QUICK TUTORIAL
The LOOK CD-ROM Viewer software is very simple to use. To
locate a product or service provider on the CD, simply enter
either the Company Name, Product Name or Product Category in
the appropriate field. If you don't know the possible
choices, selecting the drop-down button to the right of each
field will display a list of all possible values. Once you
have made your selection, press SEARCH.
LOOK will display a list of all matching entries. When you
select one of these entries, one or more of the buttons to
the right of the display will activate (in almost every case,
the IMAGE and TEXT buttons will be activated). Press the
image button (the one containing the yellow page) to view
the images of the company's literature.
You can also retrieve documents based on their content. For
instance, if you want to locate companies that sell CD-ROM
software, you might want to search for the words "CD-ROM"
and "Software" on the same page of any document. To do
this, type
cd-rom AND software
in the Containing Text field. (Notice that this text search
is not case-sensitive.) Press SEARCH and LOOK will return
all the documents with pages containing both "CD-ROM" and
"Software". For more help with full-text searching, press
the ADVANCED button.
