  8. This file contains information not found in the User 
  9. Guide and that may be of help in installing and using 
  10. this product.
  11.

  13. Running this application with less than 4MB of memory
  14. -----------------------------------------------------
  15.  
  16. While every effort has been made to ensure that this 
  17. product will run on the minimum specification machine, 
  18. you may still experience problems with some 
  19. configurations.
  20.  
  21. To optimize the available memory on your machine, try 
  22. the following.
  23.  
  24.   1  Run Windows in Enhanced mode by typing "WIN/3"
  25.   2  Configure the largest "Swap file" you can, from the 
  26.      Control Panel
  27.   3  Don't load DOS high on 2MB machines
  28.   4  Don't run any other applications at the same time.
  29.  
  30. The Interactive Periodic Table will be slower on 
  31. a machine with less than 4MB. If the product is short of 
  32. memory then it will start using an alternate set of 
  33. graphics for the screen backgrounds. This will result in 
  34. the loss of the background picture, but the program will 
  35. continue running normally in all other respects.
  36.  
  37. If the pictures don't look very good
  38. ------------------------------------
  39.  
  40. Run Windows Setup to check that you have a 256 colour 
  41. display driver configured.
  42.  
  43. Users with Cirrus 54xx v1.1 800x600x256 screen drivers 
  44. may notice some distortion of text on screen backgrounds.
  45.  
  46. If the application runs very slowly
  47. -----------------------------------
  48.  
  49. This application has been tested on a 20MHz 386 PC with 
  50. 2MB RAM, but will be better on faster machines.
  51.  
  52. One way to improve the speed of your existing machine is 
  53. as follows:
  54.  
  55.   In Control Panel:
  56.  
  57.     Select "386 Enhanced"
  58.     Click on "Virtual Memory"
  59.  
  60.       Your machine will run fastest if you have a large 
  61.       Permanent virtual memory (using 32-bit access)
  62.  
  63.     Follow the instructions to set one up.
  64.  
  65. If you find that the swap file is less than 4,000K,
  66. it may help to use a disk compaction utility.
  67.  
  68. Errors running at some high screen resolutions
  69. ----------------------------------------------
  70.  
  71. The application will run at 640x480 and 800x600 
  72. 256-colour screen resolutions. The program will not 
  73. work correctly if you are using higher resolutions.
  74.  
  75. You will need to run Windows Setup to reconfigure your 
  76. machine to one of the above resolutions.
  77.  
  78. Audio device not found 
  79. ----------------------
  80.  
  81. This occurs when an audio driver has been installed under 
  82. Windows, but the card is no longer in the machine.
  83.  
  84. To resolve the problem edit the file "SYSTEM.INI" in the 
  85. MS-Windows directory.
  86.  
  87.  
  88.   Find the section labelled "[MCI]".
  89.   Find the line beginning "WaveAudio=...".
  90.   Comment out the line by adding a semicolon at the 
  91.   start of the line.
  92.  
  93. If the Audio or Video break-up
  94. ------------------------------
  95.  
  96. Some CD-ROM drives or machines cannot play audio or video 
  97. back without the sound breaking up.
  98.  
  99. If you encounter any problems while playing audio, you 
  100. could try changing the amount of buffering used by sound.
  101.  
  102. To do this:
  103.  
  104.   In Control Panel:
  105.  
  106.     Select "Drivers"
  107.     Click on "[MCI] Sound"
  108.     Press "Setup"
  109.     Extend the audio buffering to the maximum. 
  110.  
  111. Video File Not Found
  112. --------------------
  113.  
  114. In order to display film clips, it is necessary to 
  115. install the Microsoft Video Drivers.
  116.  
  117. To do this, run:
  118.  
  119.   d:\winvideo\setup.exe
  120.  
  121. from the CD in Windows Program Manager. If the CD ROM 
  122. drive is not drive d: then change the line appropriately.
  123.  
  124. If you have a video driver already installed on your system
  125. but do not have any video appearing in the product it is because 
  126. the driver is not compatible with the video format used. To get
  127. round this, first try changing to the INDEO format video as 
  128. described below. If this doesn't work, then install the Microsoft
  129. video drivers as explained above.
  130.  
  131. Video Formats
  132. -------------
  133.  
  134. There are two versions of the video clips on the CD. The 
  135. product will initially be set up to use the best format 
  136. for software only playback (Microsoft Video 1). If you 
  137. have a DVI video card on your system then you may prefer 
  138. to use the alternative (INDEO). 
  139.  
  140. To do this install the product as normal, then edit the 
  141. file "PERIODIC.INI" that will have been placed in your 
  142. WINDOWS directory.
  143.  
  144.   Change the line:
  145.  
  146.     VideoPath=D:\VideoM1\
  147.  
  148.   to:
  149.  
  150.     VideoPath=D:\VideoIn\
  151.  
  152. If the CD ROM drive is not drive D: then change the line 
  153. appropriately.
  154.  
  155. Graphing
  156. --------
  157.  
  158. If you have more than one graph displayed and select the 
  159. PRINT or CUT options, the product will prompt you for 
  160. which graph to act on.
  161.  
  162. When copying a graph to the clipboard, it will be 
  163. saved in both DIB (device independant bitmap) and 
  164. MetaFile format. Most products that allow you to paste 
  165. graphics into them will either use the most appropriate 
  166. format or ask you which format you wish to use.

  168. Comparison Table
  169. ----------------

  171. When you copy the comparison table to the clipboard it 
  172. will insert a TAB character between each cell and add a 
  173. carriage return at the end of each row. This format may 
  174. be pasted directly into most spreadsheets, such as
  175. Microsoft's Excel. It may also be pasted into text 
  176. editors and word processors, but some may not recognise 
  177. the carriage return at the end of each line.
