  27.         Installation Instructions
  28. =======================================================================
  29. * Installation
  30.    Version 1.1 is being distributed as both a 16-bit Windows program and 
  31.    a 32-bit windows program.  If you are running Win3.x you must use the 
  32.    16-bit version even if you are running Win32s, because the 32-bit 
  33.    version makes use of 32-bit API calls not supported by Win32s.
  34.  
  35.    Both the 16-bit and 32-bit versions includes an installation program.
  36.    To install Netscape run the setup.exe program. The Netscape
  37.    installation program will install Netscape in a directory of your
  38.    choice, add a Netscape section to your WIN.INI file, and create a
  39.    Program Manager group and item.
  40.  
  41. * Initialization File    
  42.    The self extracting archive for the Netscape Navigator contains the 
  43.    initialization file netscape.ini, which has entries for  all of the 
  44.    values you can customize for the Netscape Navigator.
  45.

  49.         Win32s
  50. ========================================================================

  52. If you are running version 1.15 or below of Win32s, you will be unable to
  53. install the Netscape Navigator unless you upgrade to version 1.20 of Win32s
  54. or you remove Win32.
  55.  
  56. You can determine which version of Win32s you have in one of two ways:
  57.     - check the WIN32S.INI file in your Windows system directory
  58.     - if you are running Windows for Workgroups, select the WIN32S16.DLL 
  59.       file from the Windows system directory in File Manager. Then from 
  60.       the File menu, choose Properties. The Version line contains the 
  61.       major version and the build number.
  62.  
  63. To remove Win32s, do the following:
  64. 1. Remove the following line from the [386Enh] section in the SYSTEM.INI 
  65.    file:
  66.       device=<WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\win32s\w32s.386
  67.    where <WINDOWS> and <SYSTEM> are where the Windows and System
  68.    directories are, respectively.
  69. 2. Remove winmm16.dll from the following line from the [BOOT] section in 
  70.    the SYSTEM.INI file:
  71.       drivers=mmsystem.dll winmm16.dll
  72. 3. Delete the following files from the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM> subdirectory:
  73.       W32SYS.DLL
  74.       WIN32S16.DLL
  75.       WIN32S.INI
  76. 4. Delete all the files in the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\WIN32S subdirectory.
  77.    Then delete the subdirectory itself.
  78. 5. Restart Windows.

  81. to as application note PW1118:

  84.   included with it, download PW1118.EXE, a self-extracting file,

  102. The Netscape install program for Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups

  119.         Configuring the Netscape Audio Player

  122. For Windows NT, you must manually configure the audio player as a 
  123. Netscape Navigator helper application. To do this from the Options menu 
  124. choose Preferences.
  125.  
  126. Then select Helper Applications as the category on which to set preferences.
  127. For both the audio/x-aiff and the audio/basic file types you need to 
  128. specify the full pathname to the Netscape audio player. Typically this 
  129. will be the following pathname: C:\NETSCAPE\NAPLAYER.EXE
  130.  
  131. The Netscape Audio Player does not work with beta 2 of Windows 95, and 
  132. will report "Sound device not available" even if you have one available 
  133. and working.

  137. =======================================================================

  139. The Netscape installer will overwrite existing OLE2 DLLs with the latest
  140. versions for US Windows. This will not affect 32-bit Windows. For 16-bit
  141. Windows, the only difference between the US and the Japanese versions are
  142. the internationalization of error strings.
  143.  
  144. Occasionally, the Japanese user may see an English language OLE2 error
  145. message after installing Netscape.
  146.  
  147. Currently, there are no Japanese versions available for the OLE2 DLLs.
  148. Netscape is working with Microsoft to make the Japanese version of the 
  149. OLE2 DLLs available.

  152.         Running Netscape

  155. What do I need to run Netscape Navigator?
  156.  
  157. You must have a direct Internet connection before you can use Netscape.
  158. The ability to send and receive e-mail does not necessarily mean you can
  159. run Netscape. There are three requirements for Netscape Navigator 1.1:
  160.  
  161.     1. A direct Ethernet connection to the net, or a dialup
  162.        SLIP or PPP account from an Internet service provider.
  163.     2. TCP/IP stack
  164.     3. Netscape Navigator software
  165.  
  166. You can get a direct connection to the Internet through a service
  167. provider in your area.  You will need to get a SLIP or a PPP account
  168. from an Internet provider (for a dialup account).
  169.  
  170. When you have full Internet connectivity, you need to have a TCP/IP
  171. stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL file.

  174.         Cannot Find WINSOCK.DLL

  177. If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL" when running 
  178. Netscape Navigator that means your computer is looking for the WINSOCK.DLL
  179. file, which is part of a winsock package (also includes dialer, 
  180. TCP/IP stack).
  181.  
  182. A winsock package makes it so that your PC can talk TCP/IP, which is 
  183. necessary for Netscape to run. See the "Running Netscape" section for 
  184. details on running the Netscape Navigator, and the "Obtaining a Winsock 
  185. Package" section for suggestions on obtaining a winsock package.

  188.         Obtaining a Winsock Package

  191. You can get the shareware winsock package, which is called Trumpet
  192. Winsock (v1.0) via ftp from

  196. Other winsock packages which we have tested without problems are:

  198.     FTP Software's PC/TCP
  199.     NetManage
  200.     Microsoft WFW (Wolverine)

  203. Implementation (general):
  204. Put the winsock in its own directory, for example, C:\WINSOCK,
  205. and include the directory in your DOS PATH statement.
  206.  
  207. Enter Windows, create a group in the Program Manager for all files
  208. with your winsock program.
  209.  
  210. Please be sure that the Netscape directory is in your path located
  211. in your autoexec.bat file. You may need to add:
  212. PATH=C:\(name of the directory where netscape is located)
  213.  
  214. After making this change, save the file and reboot your computer.
