BIOGRAPHER for PAF
The 'biograph' was proposed and developed by Peter Cooley as a method for
presenting a life story and validating the data on which it is based. The
various Biographer programs are the copyright of the Ideal Present Club which
markets them.
Biographer for PAF has been created as a research aid for the Family
Historian who uses the Family Records program (FR.EXE from PERSONAL ANCESTRAL
FILE) to maintain genealogical data on a Personal Computer. Biographer is not
a genealogical database; it is an 'add-on' for PAF. Biographer for PAF reads
the same data files that PAF writes to when you input or edit your
genealogical data.
Biographer for PAF automatically generates a biograph of an individual and
their nearest relatives. A biograph is a 3-column tabulation of genealogical
events before, during and (if required) after the life of the subject..
INSTALLATION
You have been supplied with a disk containing the following files in a
compressed ZIP file:

\BIOTUTOR.PAF Subdirectory of tutorial PAF data with following files:
BIO DAT
BIO INI
INDIV2 DAT
LOG BIO
LOG BAK
MARR2 DAT
NAMADD2 DAT
NAME2 DAT
NOTES2 DAT
REPTITL2 DAT
To install, insert the disk into your floppy drive and type:
A:\>PKUNZIP -d BIOPAF.ZIP C:\PAF [enter]
This command will ensure that Biographer's data directory
BIOTUTOR.PAF is created and contains its data files. Please
ignore any installation routine mentioned in disk files, and do
not use my normal installation system using GO. "C:\PAF" in the
above command may be substituted for anything else.
If you have decompressed the zip file in any other way you will
probably find the data files together with the rest in the main
Biographer directory. You should therefore create the sub-directory
BIOTUTOR.PAF and move the data files to this. Alternatively, re-
install the zip file using the above command.
You can now take Biographer on a test drive! Just type:
C:\PAF>BIO [enter] or...
C:\PAF>BIO2 [enter] for mono LCD screen
Biographer for PAF lets you create biographs from any set of data
that you have created from PAF. If you are a new user of PAF then
it is likely that you will only have one such set of data in your
\PAF directory. In order to recognise any other sets of PAF data
that you have created already, or may create in the future,
Biographer searches for sub-directories within your \PAF
directory that have an extension (e.g. .PAF). The tutorial
material supplied by the Ideal Present Club is written to a newly
created sub-directory named \PAF\BIOTUTOR.PAF. There is no need
to do anything to your main or only set of PAF data files that
you have created using FR.EXE.
During the installation process, a new sub-directory
(\BIOTUTOR.PAF) was added to your other PAF data sets. The
genealogical data for the Ideal Present Club tutorial has been
copied from your floppy disk into this new directory. IT IS
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU GO THROUGH THE TUTORIAL ON DISK,
USING THIS DATA SET. All the examples in the Tutorial are based
upon the data in BIOTUTOR.PAF so that new users can make a direct
comparison of the information in the Tutorial with what comes up
on their own screen.
DOCUMENTATION & TUTORIAL PROGRAMS
In addition to the normal on-disk documentation provided in the
text files TUTOR1.TXT, TUTOR2.TXT, and TUTOR3.TXT, which can be
viewed or printed in the usual way with a text editor or word
processor; you have been provided with two special documentation
programs.
TUTORTSR.COM
This is a TSR (memory resident) program designed to run in tandem
with Biographer. It can be popped up at any time whilst you are
running Biographer, using the Hot Key combination ALT + SPACE
(hold down the Alt key whilst pressing the Space key), so as to
follow the tutorials whilst running the program. Your place is
remembered at each pop-up. Just load TUTORTSR before BIOGRAPHER
at the DOS prompt:
C:\PAF>TUTORTSR [enter]
C:\PAF>BIO [enter]
TUTORTSR can be unloaded from memory at any time, from the DOS
prompt, as follows:
C:\PAF>TUTORTSR/U [enter]
TUTOR.COM
If you prefer not to run a TSR, or if you have insufficient
memory (which is unlikely), or you would like to run both
programs in separate windows under Windows, then use TUTOR.COM.
This is a standard transient version of the documentation
program.

* An Extract from Biographer's External Events Database
Biographer uses an External Events Database to add any events you choose,
in addition to the personal events extracted from Pedigree or PAF, to the
biograph of a subject, where these occur during the time period of the
biograph or the lifetime of the subject. The database is a plain ASCII text
file which can be edited using a word processor or text editor. The size of
the database is limited only by disk space and the layout must be exactly
as illustrated in the following example extract; each event occupying one
line. The line length can be longer than 80 characters, although in this
example the length is limited to 76:
