  72.             CHAPTER 1: WELCOME TO VIRUSSCAN

  74.             Thank you for purchasing McAfee(R)'s VirusScan(TM)
  75.             software, a powerful and advanced system
  76.             designed to detect, eradicate, and prevent
  77.             computer viruses. VirusScan will help you
  78.             protect one of your most important assets--the
  79.             information on your personal computer or local
  80.             area network.

  82.             VirusScan includes two main programs:
  83.             
  84.             o The Scan program detects known viruses in your
  85.               computer's memory or on disks. It can also
  86.               detect new and unknown viruses. Once viruses
  87.               are detected, it can remove them and restore
  88.               your system to normal operation. The Scan
  89.               program comes in two forms:

  91.               o A graphical interface so that you can select
  92.                 commands and options using a mouse and
  93.                 keyboard, if you like. For instructions,
  94.                 see the on-line documentation.

  96.               o A command line interface, so you can run the
  97.                 program and select options by typing from a
  98.                 command prompt or from batch or script files,
  99.                 if you prefer.

  101.             o The VShield(TM) memory-resident program
  102.               continuously monitors and protects your
  103.               system from viruses that might be introduced.

  105.             The VirusScan programs run on IBM-PC or 100%
  106.             compatible personal computers (PCs) that use
  107.             DOS, Windows, or OS/2.
  108.             
  109.             VirusScan is an important element of a
  110.             comprehensive security program that includes a
  111.             variety of safety measures, such as regular
  112.             backups, meaningful password protection,
  113.             training, and awareness. We urge you to set up
  114.             and comply with such a security program in your

  176.             The VirusScan programs require an IBM-compatible
  177.             personal computer and any of the following

  186.             VShield is a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR)
  187.             program. VShield attempts to minimize the use of
  188.             conventional memory by loading into expanded,
  189.             extended, or upper memory. For more information,
  190.             see "VShield Reference" in Chapter 4.

  192.             You'll need a high-density 3.5" diskette drive
  193.             to use the VirusScan diskette in this package.
