  2. MEMORY TROUBLESHOOTING
  3. for IBM compatibles using Windows 3.1 or higher and MS-DOS 5.0 or 
  4. higher

  8. Some game players have experienced difficulty getting enough memory to 
  9. run Space Quest VI.  This usually occurs on computer systems with 4 
  10. megabytes of RAM.  If you are having memory problems or are receiving 
  11. memory-related errors during the game, here is a list of troubleshooting 
  12. steps to try.
  13.  
  14. The following instructions have been prepared by Sierra's Technical 
  15. Support Department as an added service to our customers.  PLEASE 
  16. NOTE: SIERRA DOES NOT MAKE ANY CLAIMS, GUARANTEES, 
  17. AND/OR PROMISES THAT THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS 
  18. WILL WORK ON ANY AND/OR ALL COMPUTER SYSTEMS.

  21. 1) LOWER SCIMINK VALUE:  Edit the RESOURCE.WIN file and 
  22. lower the SCIMINK value to 1900.  Do not lower this line below 1900; 
  23. values lower than 1900 will cause problems during the game.  
  24. NOTE - Lowering the SCIMINK to 1900 will force the CD drive to access 
  25. more often, and will result in slightly slower game play, but may help 
  26. solve memory problems.

  29. 3) CHECK THE SWAP FILE: Establish a permanent SWAP file at about 
  30. 6 MEGS.  This will help free up memory.  Do not set the swap file too 
  31. high, 6-8 megs permanent should be enough.

  34. 4) CREATE A BOOT DISK:  Sierra has included a boot disk maker with 
  35. the game.  The Boot Disk Creator is the last option available in the Setup 
  36. program.  You can run it manually by double-clicking on the boot disk 
  37. creator icon in the SIERRA program group.   In addition, instructions for 
  38. creating a boot disk manually are included at the end of this 
  39. troubleshooting guide.

  42. 5) DISABLE SMARTDRV: Space Quest VI will actually run faster with 
  43. SMARTDRV disabled.  Making a boot disk will disable SMARTDRV.  
  44. Boot disk instructions for Space Quest VI are at the end of this 
  45. document.

  48. 6) CREATE A CLEAN WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT:  Make sure that 
  49. there are no other Windows programs running.  Disable all screen savers, 
  50. virus scans, etc.  If you are using an alternate Windows desktop (PC 
  51. Tools, Dashboard, Packard Bell Navigator, etc.), use plain Program 
  52. Manager instead.   If you have sound-related Windows programs installed 
  53. (IconHearIt, SoundBits, etc.), make sure they are disabled before starting 
  54. the game.  Also, turn off your Wallpaper in Desktop in Control Panel.  
  55. Wallpaper can sometimes take up a considerable amount of memory.

  58. 7) WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS v3.11:  Because of the memory 
  59. requirements of Windows for Workgroups, you may experience trouble 
  60. getting enough memory for the game if you have only 4 megs of RAM.  If 
  61. you are using Windows for Workgroups, we highly recommend that you 
  62. have at least 8 megs of RAM on your computer.

  103. STEP 1
  104. FORMATTING THE DISK
  105. PLEASE NOTE: It is necessary to format the disk even if the disk is 
  106. already formatted.  The /S switch will transfer files to the boot disk which 
  107. are necessary for the disk to work correctly.  To make a  CD-
  108. ROM Boot Disk, format a high density diskette in the A: drive.  (Use 
  109. /F:360 or  /F:720 parameter if using a low density diskette) For more 
  110. information on using the FORMAT command, consult your DOS 
  111. manual. Note: This will not work in the B: drive.  Type the command as 
  112. follows:

  114. FORMAT  A:/S  <ENTER>
  115.  
  116. If after entering this command the system responds with a "Bad command 
  117. or file name" error, then type:
  118.  
  119. PATH=C:\DOS  <ENTER>
  120.  
  121. Now retype the FORMAT command above.  If you still receive the same 
  122. error, the MS DOS FORMAT command may not be on your system or it 
  123. may have been renamed.  Programs such as PC Tools and Norton Disk 
  124. Utilities can rename the format command to prevent accidental loss of 
  125. data. If you are using a program like this, check your documentation to 
  126. find out how to format a SYSTEM DISK, then proceed to Step 2.

  128. STEP 2
  129. LOCATING THE MSCDEX CD ROM EXTENSION (skip if not playing 
  130. a CD game) MSCDEX is the Microsoft extension for CD ROM drives.  It 
  131. must be loaded in order for your CD ROM drive to operate.  The 
  132. following steps should assist you in locating this file on your 
  133. system   To locate MSCDEX, at the C:\> prompt, type:    
  134. TYPE  AUTOEXEC.BAT  |  MORE  <ENTER>
  135.  
  136. NOTE: The | is called a "pipe" command and is created by pressing 
  137. <SHIFT> \ (backslash).  Now look for the line which loads "MSCDEX".  
  138. This line should look something like this: :

  140. C:\DOS\MSCDEX  /D:MSCD001
  141. LH  C:\DOS\MSCDEX  /D:MSCD001
  142. LOADHIGH  /L:14429  \DOS\MSCDEX  /D:MSCD001

  144. Your line may differ from the ones listed above.  Please write down the 
  145. entire line following the drive letter in the space provided below.  Be sure 
  146. and include the full drive and path to your MSCDEX file.  For example, 
  147. any of the above lines should appear as follows:

  152. STEP 3
  153. LOCATING THE CD ROM DEVICE DRIVER (skip if you're not playing 
  154. a CD game)  
  155. Along with MSCDEX, the CD ROM also needs a device driver.  This 
  156. driver is loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file.   To determine the correct CD 
  157. ROM device driver, at the C:\> prompt type:
  158.  
  159. TYPE  CONFIG.SYS  |  MORE  <ENTER>
  160.  
  161. NOTE: If you have a SCSI CD ROM drive, there may be an additional 
  162. driver in your CONFIG.SYS that must be run for the CD ROM device 
  163. drivers to load correctly.  Check your CD ROM drive documentation for 
  164. more information.

  166. Now look for the line that contains CD ROM device name which 
  167. immediately follows the same "/D:" switch as the MSCDEX line in the 
  168. AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Using the example above, we would be looking 
  169. for a line containing "MSCD001".  This line should look something like 
  170. one of  the following lines:

  172. DEVICE=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS  /D:MSCD001  /P:220 
  173. DEVICEHIGH=C:\DRV\CDROMDRV.SYS  /D:MSCD001  /P:220

  188. STEP 4
  189. CREATING THE CONFIG.SYS FILE
  190. Now switch to the A: drive and type the following:

  192. COPY  CON  CONFIG.SYS <ENTER> (The cursor will drop down one 
  193. line and blink)
  194. DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS  <ENTER>    
  195. FILES=20 <ENTER>    
  196. BUFFERS=10 <ENTER> 
  197. DOS=HIGH  <ENTER>

  199. Now add the CD ROM driver line as you wrote it down in the "Locating 
  200. the CD ROM device driver" section above.  Complete the file by pressing 
  201. the  F6  Function key <ENTER>

  203. STEP 5
  204. CREATING THE AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE
  205. Now create an AUTOEXEC.BAT file by typing:
  206.  
  207. COPY  CON  AUTOEXEC.BAT   <ENTER> (the cursor will drop down 
  208. one line)
  209. ECHO OFF <ENTER>    
  210. SET  COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM  <ENTER>    
  211. C: <ENTER>
  212. PROMPT  SIERRA  CD  BOOT  DISK  $_$P$G  <ENTER>    
  213. PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;  <ENTER>

  215. Add the MSCDEX line as you wrote it down in the "Locating the 
  216. MSCDEX CD ROM extension" 
  217. section listed above.

  219. Complete the file by pressing the  F6  Function key <ENTER>

  221. STEP 6
  222. REBOOT THE SYSTEM
  223. Reboot your system by depressing the <RESET> button on your computer 
  224. or by using the <CTRL>, 
  225. <ALT>, <DEL> key sequence on your keyboard.  When you are at a C:\ 
  226. prompt, type WIN /3 to start 
  227. Windows.
