6146 A Compilation Album is a CD with tracks by different artists. Soundtracks and samplers are prime examples. \n\nDon't confuse this with an 'anthology' such as a 'Greatest Hits' CD, which consists of previously released tracks from different albums. If they are all by the same artist, then this is not a Compilation.\n\nThe Artist for a Compilation Album should almost always be 'Various Artists'. Don't put the name of the collection or anything else in Artist if it is not the name of an actual Artist.
6147 Entering the Artist Name (Classical):\n\nThe easiest way to enter the Artist Name is if you have already entered the Conductor, Ensemble, and any Principal Performer for the CD. Then you can click on these building blocks to construct the Artist Name as you see it on the spine or cover of the CD\n\nDon't use the Composer as the Recording Artist unless:\na - The composer was alive and participated in the recording;\n or \nb - No other name appears on the spine or cover of the CD.
6148 Type or edit the name, and separate it for sorting.\n\nThe sorting information helps programs sort names alphabetically.\n\nClick the 'Separate' button to split the name automatically. If it is not correct, click again.\n\nFor a person's name you may need to click more than once to find the correct split. For example, Ludwig van Beethoven separates differently ('van' is part of First Name) than Eddie Van Halen ('Van' is part of Last Name).\n\nFor bands and ensembles, 90% of the time, the sorting word follows the word 'The' (if any), and so everything goes in First Name. If this is not the name of a person, Last Name is usually blank. The main exception is a band named after a person in the band.
6149 The sorting information helps programs sort titles alphabetically.\n\nFor example, we want 'The Wall' to sort under 'W', not 'T'.\n\nEvery language has different sorting rules, and different words are excluded from sorting.\nFor example, in English, the only word we strip out is the article 'The'.\nFor consistency, please don't put 'A' or 'An' or any other word in 'The'.\n\nYou should only enter non-English words in the 'The' field if they are correct for the Data Language setting at the top of the Album tab.
