Originally introduced in 1950 as a division-level air defense asset for the Red Army, the S-60 was replaced in the mid-1970Æs by the SA-8 missile system as air defense roles were taken over by SAMÆs. Despite being "old technology," AAA can still play a role on the modern battlefield, especially when used in conjunction with radar fire control equipment. Today, these "flak" guns are found almost exclusively in third-world armies, surrounding important, stationary targets.%n
