  16. INTRODUCTION
  17. ------------
  18. Clip Director is a CD-ROM file utility designed to provide a
  19. quick and easy means of browsing through .AVI movie clip files
  20. on a compact disk.  In conjunction with a library file located
  21. on the CD-ROM disk itself, Clip Director provides a variety of
  22. useful information about each .AVI clip, including a file
  23. description, file size, playing time, as well as background
  24. information about the motion picture from which the clip was
  25. obtained.  Clip Director can also display a "still" picture
  26. from each clip.
  27.  
  28. Best of all, Clip Director provides a built-in .AVI file
  29. viewer, which can play the selected clip directly from the
  30. CD-ROM drive.
  31.  
  32. Clip Director's .AVI playback functions are not limited to
  33. files on the CD-ROM disk.  The program provides an .AVI File
  34. Open function, allowing quick and easy playback of .AVI files
  35. anywhere on the user's system (i.e., from any installed physical
  36. or logical drive).
  37.  
  38. Clip Director offers a convenient method of navigating the
  39. contents of a CD-ROM disk, removing the guesswork of having to
  40. rely on directory listings of inscrutable 8-character filenames.
  41.  
  42. In short, the program makes its associated CD-ROM disks easier
  43. and more fun to use!
  44.  
  45. NOTE:  Clip Director requires that a version of the Video for
  46. Windows driver set be installed and correctly configured for
  47. this system.  The run-time version of this driver set may be
  48. included on your CD-ROM disk or on the Clip Director master
  49. disk.  The run-time version of Video for Windows can also be
  50. ordered directly from Microsoft Corporation, or downloaded from
  51. public bulletin boards or on-line information services like
  52. CompuServe and Prodigy.  Instructions for the installation and
  53. configuration of the Video for Windows driver set is included
  54. with the driver files.

  58. PROGRAM FILES
  59. -------------
  60. The CLIP DIRECTOR DEMO package consists of four files:
  61.  
  62. README.TXT
  63. A small ASCII text file, containing release information and
  64. installation notes.  This file may be viewed with Windows
  65. Notepad or any comparable text editor/viewer.
  66.  
  67. CLIPDEMO.EXE
  68. The executable program file.
  69.  
  70. CLIPDEMO.HLP
  71. The Windows Help file, used for providing comprehensive
  72. run-time help.  Help topics may be easily printed through
  73. the Windows Help menu bar "File/Print Topic" command.
  74.  
  75. CLIPDEMO.TXT
  76. This file, containing program information, notes, and
  77. general instructions.
  78.  
  79. A fifth file, CLIPDEMO.INI, is created the first time the
  80. program is run, and maintained in your default Windows
  81. directory (e.g., C:\WINDOWS or C:\WIN).

  85. PROGRAM NOTES
  86. -------------
  87. Clip Director runs within the Microsoft Windows environment
  88. (versions 3.1 or higher), and requires the following:
  89.  
  90. * VGA graphics (640x480) or higher.
  91.  
  92. Clip Director runs in 16-color mode, but will run
  93. acceptably on monochrome or black & white VGA systems.
  94.  
  95. A mouse or other pointing device is highly recommended, but
  96. not required for program operation.

  99.  
  100. GETTING STARTED
  101. ---------------
  102. Clip Director requires very little in the way of configuration
  103. or setup.
  104.  
  105. Clip Director can be run from a Windows File Manager command
  106. line (via "File/Run") or from a Program Manager icon.
  107.  
  108. The first time Clip Manager is run, the program's CD-ROM drive
  109. letter setting (i.e., D, E, F, etc.) should be entered.  This
  110. is accomplished by selecting the menu bar "Options/Select
  111. CD-ROM Drive..." command.  This command opens a dialog box
  112. containing a single drop-down listbox control.  You should
  113. select the letter of your installed CD-ROM drive and close the
  114. dialog box with the "OK" button.
  115.  
  116. Once this selection is made, the drive letter is written into
  117. Clip Director's initialization file and used as the program
  118. default.  This default will be placed into effect every time
  119. Clip Director is run.  As a result, you should not have to
  120. make the drive selection again unless you change your system
  121. hardware setup or disk drive assignments.
  122.  
  123. If you do change your system setup to add, remove, or replace
  124. an installed CD-ROM drive, you will probably need to re-set
  125. Clip Director's CD-ROM drive default.
  126.  
  127. NOTE:  The CD-ROM drive setting must be correct, or Clip
  128. Director will not be able to access the correct library file
  129. on the CD-ROM disk.
  130.  
  131. If you like, you may select the display format in which your
  132. movie clips will be played.  By default, the program will play
  133. .AVI files in a window which may be moved or minimized.  You
  134. can easily toggle between window and full-screen display via
  135. the menu bar "Options/Preview In Window" and "Options/Preview
  136. Full-Screen" commands.
  137.  
  138. With this simple selection, Clip Director is now ready for use!
  139.

  141.  
  142. USING CLIP DIRECTOR
  143. -------------------
  144. When Clip Director is up and running, the selected CD-ROM
  145. disk should be inserted into the CD-ROM drive.  As with any
  146. removable media, you should take care to see that the CD-ROM
  147. disk is inserted correctly and that the drive tray, door, or
  148. latch is secured.
  149.  
  150. When it is loaded, the disk is ready to be scanned by Clip
  151. Director.
  152.  
  153. To scan the CD-ROM disk, simply press the "SCAN" button.
  154. Clip Director will verify that a recognizable CD-ROM disk is
  155. loaded in the drive and will load the clip file descriptions
  156. into the listbox control located on the left side of the
  157. program window.
  158.  
  159. NOTE:  If Clip Director does not recognize the loaded CD-ROM
  160. disk, or encounters a problem scanning its contents, an
  161. error message will be posted, giving you the chance to
  162. change disks or check the CD-ROM drive to make sure the disk
  163. is inserted correctly.
  164.  
  165. Assuming the disk has been successfully scanned, you are
  166. free to browse through the clip descriptions in the listbox
  167. control.  Note that this control contains all .AVI clips
  168. contained on the CD-ROM disk, regardless of their directory
  169. locations.  Even so, you are able to scroll through them as
  170. though they were all in a single directory.
  171.  
  172. When a clip description is selected, the .AVI file name and
  173. file size are displayed in the status boxes located along the
  174. bottom of the program window.  Some detailed background
  175. information about the selected clip may also be provided in
  176. the large status box located on the right side of the program
  177. window.  If available, a clip "still" from the .AVI file will
  178. be displayed, as well.  The "still" is a 16-color bitmap, and
  179. will display in fewer colors than its associated AVI file
  180. (assuming Windows is being run in a 256-color or higher video
  181. mode).
  182.  
  183. The clip itself can be played at any time by pressing the
  184. "PLAY" button, or by double-clicking the mouse pointer on the
  185. clip description in the listbox control.  The .AVI file will
  186. play in its own window or full-screen, depending on Clip
  187. Director's current display option setting.
  188.  
  189. When a clip is opened for playback, Clip Director is able to
  190. access the Video for Windows driver for additional information
  191. about the .AVI file itself.  This information (total frames
  192. and play time) is displayed during playback.
  193.  
  194. When previewed in a window, playback can be paused or canceled
  195. by pressing the "PAUSE" or "CLOSE" buttons, respectively.
  196. When previewed full-screen, playback can be closed by clicking
  197. the left mouse button or pressing the keyboard spacebar.
  198.  
  199. A paused clip may be restarted at any time by pressing the
  200. "PLAY" button.
  201.  
  202. When a window-previewed clip finishes playing, it is still
  203. considered "open" (and is, in fact automatically rewound for
  204. additional play).  Before selecting a different clip, the
  205. current one must be closed via the "CLOSE" button.
  206.  
  207. NOTE:  Clip Director will only support playback of one .AVI
  208. file at a time.
  209.  
  210. Help is available at any time through the Clip Director
  211. menu bar "Help/Contents..." command.  You can directly
  212. access any Help topic through the Index, or browse from
  213. topic to topic.
  214.  
  215. Help topics may be printed through the Windows Help menu bar
  216. "File/Print Topic" command.

  220. MENU BAR COMMAND SUMMARY
  221. ------------------------
  222. File
  223.     Open AVI File...
  224.     ----------------
  225.     This command opens a file dialog box from which any
  226.     .AVI movie file can be selected for playing.  From
  227.     the dialog box, the user can select an .AVI file
  228.     from a listbox control (or by typing the filename or
  229.     pathname in the "File Name" edit control), and play
  230.     the file by pressing the "OK" pushbutton control.
  231.     An .AVI file can also be played by double-clicking
  232.     on the filename entry in the left-hand file listbox
  233.     control.
  234.  
  235.     Like the "PLAY" button in the main program window,
  236.     the "Open .AVI File" function will play an .AVI file
  237.     in the current display context (window or full-screen)
  238.     selected from the menu bar "Options/Preview In Window"
  239.     and "Options/Preview Full-Screen" commands.
  240.  
  241.     Exit
  242.     ----
  243.     Unconditionally closes Clip Director.
  244.  
  245. Options
  246.     Select CD-ROM Drive...
  247.     ----------------------
  248.     This command opens a drive selection dialog box
  249.     allowing the user a means of selecting the CD-ROM
  250.     drive to scan and browse.  This selection need only
  251.     be made once (the selected drive letter is written
  252.     into Clip Director's initialization file), unless
  253.     the CD-ROM drive letter is changed, or the drive
  254.     itself is removed.
  255.  
  256.     Clip Director requires that the CD-ROM drive
  257.     selection be correct.
  258.  
  259.     Preview In Window
  260.     -----------------
  261.     Clip Director implements its own built-in .AVI player
  262.     for displaying full motion .AVI clip files in a
  263.     window or full-screen.  This command configures Clip
  264.     Director for previewing .AVI files in a standard
  265.     child window.  On most systems, the display is
  266.     rendered at the current video mode setting (e.g.,
  267.     black & white, 16-color, or 256-color).  When a clip
  268.     is played in a window, the user is able to move the
  269.     preview window on the screen and retains access to
  270.     the Clip Director button commands.
  271.  
  272.     Selecting this menu command will de-select the Preview
  273.     Full-Screen selection.
  274.  
  275.     Preview Full-Screen
  276.     -------------------
  277.     This command configures Clip Director for previewing
  278.     .AVI files in a full-screen mode.  On most systems,
  279.     the display is rendered in the center of the screen at
  280.     320x240 resolution (allowing 256-color display on
  281.     16-color devices).  When a clip is played full-screen,
  282.     the user is unable to move the preview window on the
  283.     screen and loses access to the Clip Director button
  284.     commands (an .AVI file clip running in full-screen can
  285.     always be closed with a click of the left mouse button
  286.     or by pressing the keyboard spacebar).

  288.     Selecting this menu command will de-select the Preview
  289.     In Window selection.
  290.  
  291. Help
  292.     Contents
  293.     --------
  294.     Launches the Windows Help system and loads the Clip
  295.     Director help file (CLIPDEMO.HLP).  This "manual on
  296.     disk" is a useful source of program information and
  297.     operating instructions.  You may select specific
  298.     topics to read, or browse from topic to topic.  You
  299.     may even print topics for later reference.
  300.  
  301.     About Clip Director...
  302.     ----------------------
  303.     Opens a dialog box containing Clip Director
  304.     version and copyright information.
  305.

  307.  
  308. TROUBLESHOOTING
  309. ---------------
  310. Disk Scanning Problems...
  311.  
  312.     Clip Director can only scan CD-ROM disks set up to work
  313.     with the program.  These CD-ROM disks have a specific
  314.     directory containing at least one library file used by
  315.     Clip Director for locating and verifying .AVI (video)
  316.     and .AVB (still shot) files.
  317.  
  318.     If Clip Director scans a CD-ROM disk and does not locate
  319.     the required directory and library files, Clip Director
  320.     assumes that one of two conditions is present:
  321.  
  322.     a) The incorrect disk has been loaded into the CD-ROM
  323.     drive.
  324.  
  325.     b) The drive door, tray, or latch has not been secured.
  326.  
  327.     In either event, the scanning operation is aborted and
  328.     an error message is posted.
  329.  
  330.     If you are sure the correct CD-ROM disk has been
  331.     loaded into the CD-ROM drive, and Clip Director still
  332.     cannot scan the disk, you should...
  333.  
  334.     1. Make sure the correct CD-ROM drive letter has been
  335.     selected for Clip Director.  You may change this
  336.     setting via the menu bar "Options/CD-ROM Drive..."
  337.     command.
  338.  
  339.     2. Make sure your CD-ROM drive is correctly installed
  340.     and that the correct drivers have been configured for
  341.     its use by your operating system and/or Windows.  If
  342.     you make a change to any of the driver settings, you
  343.     may have to reboot your computer and/or restart
  344.     Windows.
  345.  
  346.     3. Attempt to access the CD-ROM drive from Windows
  347.     File Manager.  If you cannot do this, the problem is
  348.     probably with your driver or hardware installation.
  349.  
  350.     4. If all else fails, check your Windows User's Manual
  351.     and any documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive.
  352.  
  353.  
  354. .AVI File Playback Problems...
  355.  
  356.     Before playing a selected .AVI file, Clip Director
  357.     verifies your current Video for Windows driver
  358.     configuration.  If your Video for Windows driver is not
  359.     installed, or is incorrectly configured, Clip Director
  360.     will post an error message informing you of this
  361.     condition.  Though you will be unable to play .AVI
  362.     files without the Video for Windows driver, you will
  363.     still be able to browse through the contents of your
  364.     CD-ROM disk, and will still be able to view the
  365.     bitmapped "stills" from your clips.
  366.  
  367.     If you have problems getting the program to play .AVI
  368.     files, or experience difficulties during playback you
  369.     should...
  370.  
  371.     1. Make sure you are running the correct version of
  372.     Microsoft Windows, and that your other hardware and
  373.     software requirements (memory, video, etc.) are met.
  374.  
  375.     2. Check your Control Panel "Drivers" listings and
  376.     make sure your Video for Windows driver(s) are
  377.     correctly installed and configured.  Running Windows
  378.     Media Player and playing an .AVI file is a good way
  379.     to confirm that your video drivers are correctly
  380.     installed.
  381.  
  382.     3. If you have Windows-compatible sound hardware
  383.     installed in your PC and are having trouble with
  384.     audio during .AVI playback, you should check to make
  385.     sure your audio/waveform drivers are correctly
  386.     installed and configured.  Running Windows Media
  387.     Player and playing a .WAV (waveform) file is a good way
  388.     to confirm that your audio drivers are correctly
  389.     installed.  Bear in mind that not all .AVI files
  390.     include an audio track; some may be clips from silent
  391.     movies.  Also, the current Video for Windows drivers
  392.     do not support the Microsoft PC Speaker Driver.  If
  393.     your only installed sound hardware is the PC case
  394.     speaker, you will still be able to play .AVI files, but
  395.     will not have audio support.
  396.  
  397.     4. If all else fails, check your Windows User's Manual
  398.     and any documentation that came with your Video for
  399.     Windows drivers.
