  1. README.541 -- Changes Since 5.40   Revised 9/11/92
  2.  
  3. TAPCIS 5.41 is an interim release. The main purpose is to fix bugs
  4. that have been reported. There are, however, a few extra things
  5. included just to keep things interesting.
  6.  
  7. Update subscribers will be sent the release version of 5.41 within
  8. 2-3 weeks from its public posting on the TAPCIS Forum. Other
  9. registered TAPCIS customers can either order the update subscription
  10. or an individual disk from Support Group, Inc., at 74020,10 or Phone
  11. (800) USA-GROUP, (301) 387-4500.

  14.                     COMPUSERVE MESSAGE SOFTWARE CHANGES
  15.  
  16. CompuServe will be rolling out new message software this fall. This 
  17. software has already been moved to the PRACTICE Forum as of early
  18. Sept 1992. TAPCIS 5.4 is compatible with this new software, as is
  19. TAPCIS 5.41. Whether using TAPCIS 5.4 or TAPCIS 5.41, you will want to
  20. add the following line to your TAPCIS.CFG file once the new software
  21. has been moved to ALL forums, sometime in October:
  22.  
  23. /FORUMMAX=10000
  24.  
  25. This tells TAPCIS that a forum can now hold a single message of up to
  26. 10,000 characters. This is close to a five fold increase over the old
  27. forum software. This should totally eliminate the need to /split forum
  28. messages.
  29.  
  30. At the same time, you will also likely see an increase in the total
  31. number of messages that busy forums will hold, hopefully yielding no less
  32. than a one week scroll rate (whereas now some forums scroll off "old"
  33. messages every few days).
  34.  
  35. The /NUMORDER option will now have no effect in TAPCIS with the new
  36. forum software. All messages are read section by section in thread order.
  37. TAPCIS has been getting messages in this order by default for a couple of
  38. years, so unless you use the /NUMORDER=Y option, you won't notice any
  39. change here.

  44.                               WHAT'S NEW
  45.  
  46. ADDRESS BOOK : <A> When Reading a Message
  47.  
  48.         You can now edit the address before it is saved in the address
  49.         book file USERID.CIS.
  50.  
  51.         If you use <Ctrl-A> rather than <A>, TAPCIS will ask which
  52.         mailing list file (files that end with .ML) you would like to
  53.         save the address to.
  54.  
  55. PARAMS SELECTION : <Alt-F> from main menu, P>arams or F>orums screen
  56.  
  57.         Rather than choosing the PARAMS.* file from the list, you
  58.         can press a period <.> and enter the extension directly. Some
  59.         people will find this easier than picking from the list.
  60.  
  61. FIFO BUFFERS
  62.  
  63.         You can turn off FIFO buffers on 16550 UARTS that have
  64.         defective buffers using the /FIFO=N command line or TAPCIS.CFG
  65.         option.
  66.  
  67. REPLY with EXTRA COPIES : <U>A while Reading MAIL
  68.  
  69.         If you get a MAIL message and want to reply but also send a
  70.         copy of your reply to other addresses, use <U>se-Address
  71.         rather than <R>eply. You will first be shown the address for
  72.         the person that sent you the message. You can edit this
  73.         address if you want, but usually you will press <Enter> for
  74.         the next To: prompt. Add the additional recipients in the same
  75.         way you normally address MAIL messages (using semicolons at
  76.         the end, lookup in the address book, mailing lists, etc.). You
  77.         can also change the subject if another subject would be better.

  79. LOGIN SCRIPTS
  80.  
  81.         The INFONET.SCR script should be used OUTSIDE of Europe only.
  82.         Using this script inside of Europe results in much higher
  83.         connect charges. You should use the new INFOEURO.SCR script
  84.         inside Europe.
  85.         
  86.         We've also added login scripts for DATEX, DIALPLus, and TELEPAC
  87.         networks.

  91.                              CORRECTIONS
  92.  
  93. C7FF UNINTENTIONAL WRITE
  94.  
  95.         TAPCIS 5.4 in certain cases would write to two bytes in the
  96.         C7FF region of memory. If you have excluded that region from
  97.         your memory manager for use with 5.4, you can remove that
  98.         exclusion with this version of TAPCIS.
  99.  
  100. TIMEOUT
  101.  
  102.         Corrected certain cases where the internal TAPCIS three minute
  103.         timeout would not occur and would rely on the CompuServe 20
  104.         minute timeout. This version should timeout properly in all
  105.         places.
  106.  
  107. SIMPLE TERMINAL
  108.  
  109.         The parity bit is now filtered in Simple Terminal so you can
  110.         use it (! from the main menu) to log into CompuServe if
  111.         necessary or to talk to another computer system.
  112.  
  113. TAPCIS.CFG
  114.  
  115.         A reminder has been added that you must exit and re-enter
  116.         TAPCIS for changes to the TAPCIS.CFG file to take effect.
  117.  
  118. SCRIPTS
  119.  
  120.         Changed scripts so that aborting them will stop them
  121.         completely and not dump the rest of the send commands to
  122.         CompuServe as could happen under certain circumstances.
  123.  
  124. USERID HIGHLIGHT
  125.  
  126.         This version properly highlights messages To/From your userID
  127.         and does not highlight messages that are from similar but not
  128.         identical UIDs.
  129.  
  130. *SYSOP MESSAGES
  131.  
  132.         If these messages are posted "Private" then TAPCIS 5.41 will post
  133.         them properly on the forum. *SYSOP messages are by their
  134.         nature readable only by the primary sysops of the forum and
  135.         should be posted "1-Public" rather than as "2-Private." The effect
  136.         will still be as the writer intends.
  137.  
  138. MAIL
  139.  
  140.         Corrects the sending of the subject by waiting for the full
  141.         prompt. Was getting confused by addresses with colons.
  142.  
  143.         If a bad address is included as part of a mailing list or
  144.         multiple address, TAPCIS will now choose to skip that address
  145.         and will beep when online, but will continue with the post.
  146.         You will need to refer to the ONLINE.LOG if you need to
  147.         correct an address in your list a resend the message from your
  148.         OUTBOX (if you are saving it, which we do recommend).
  149.  
  150. LIBRARIES
  151.  
  152.         This version will use the library number stored in the
  153.         C>atalog to get the file rather than relying on across-library
  154.         searching to find it (which was coming up with the oldest file
  155.         that matched rather than the most recent version). The only
  156.         downside of this change is that if you have a catalog of a
  157.         "New Uploads" directory (found in some forums), you will need
  158.         to download the files from that library right away, before
  159.         they are moved to their permanent "home" library.
  160.  
  161.         On some networks, TAPCIS was sending the "M" command immediately
  162.         after the name of the file to download. That has been
  163.         corrected.
  164.  
  165. KEYBOARD
  166.  
  167.         The keyboard handler has been changed so as not to interfere
  168.         with certain keyboard macro programs.
  169.  
  170. JOIN : <Alt-J> to Join Forums
  171.  
  172.         Join has been corrected to properly join forums that were
  173.         previously joined by CIM that have no sections selected and
  174.         forums with no libraries. This new revision will override the
  175.         section settings under OPTIONS and choose ALL sections. You
  176.         can use the section choices on the F>orums screen to select
  177.         the sections that you are interested in.
  178.  
  179. ZENITH SUPERSPORT
  180.  
  181.         An incompatibility with the COM port routines and the
  182.         unusual power down sequence in Zenith SuperSport laptops
  183.         has been resolved and should now work in 5.41.
  184.  
  185. OTHER ITEMS
  186.  
  187.         Changed TAPCIS(tm) to TAPCIS(R) to note registered trademark.
  188.  
  189.         Adding to address book after a W>rite command is fixed.
  190.  
  191.         Remove SYSOP in front of names when adding to A>ddress book.
  192.  
  193.         The BREAK signal sent to the remote modem has been changed
  194.         from a short break to a long break.
  195.  
  196.         If the modem indicates that it is not clear to send to it when
  197.         the port is opened, TAPCIS will wait an arbitrary 3 seconds
  198.         before trying to send the initialization string. This will
  199.         work on some modems that are slow to bring up CTS when DTR
  200.         appears.
  201.  
  202.         Added NO DIAL TONE for US Robotics modems (Hayes modems
  203.         respond NO DIALTONE).
  204.  
  205.         You can now use a colon instead of the equals sign on the
  206.         command line. This was needed for batch files when you pass
  207.         command line options using %1 %2 etc. For example, you can use
  208.         /LOG:ALL or /LOG=ALL, but the first is the only one that will
  209.         work when you pass it to a BATch file.
  210.  
  211.         Fixed the crash when Help was requested from the sections and some
  212.         other prompts.
  213.  
  214.         Updated help for [Forward/Tab], Jump in catalog, simple terminal 
  215.         from the main menu, and new features.
  216.  
  217.         Added 2 second delay after OFF is sent to give CompuServe enough
  218.         time to finish processing in the forums and MAIL.
  219.
