  1. IMPORTANT NOTES:
  2.  
  3.     Thanks to a review in the Feb 25, 1992 issue of PC Magazine, it has
  4.     come to our attention that there is a commercial program already out
  5.     there going by the name of MAILMAN.  While we were unaware of this
  6.     package when we first issued MAIL MANAGER, and we certainly were not
  7.     attempting to usurp their program name and goodwill, we have seen
  8.     other authors hauled into court over such things.  To avoid any
  9.     potential conflicts with the commercial package, we have eliminated
  10.     any reference to the name MAILMAN as applied to this program, except
  11.     where needed for clarity in understanding how to update from earlier
  12.     releases.  Keep reading to see how this change affects installation.

  14.     This version of Mail Manager is free, but an enhanced version, with
  15.     a $25.00 registration fee, is in the works.  See ENHANCED.DOC for
  16.     details.

  18. MAIL MANAGER v1.34:
  19.  
  20.    If you are installing Mail Manager for the first time, read the
  21.    section in MAILMGR.DOC entitled "Installing Mail Manager from
  22.    scratch".
  23.  
  24.    If you are upgrading from either v1.30 or v1.33, you should do the
  25.    following: 
  26.  
  27.         [ ] Replace your existing MAILMGR.EXE and MAILCFG.EXE programs
  28.             with the ones included in this package.
  29.  
  30.         [ ] (Optional) - Run MAILCFG.EXE once against your existing
  31.             MAILMGR.CFG file, and save your setup (without making any
  32.             changes).  All this does is update the version number in
  33.             your configuration file.
  34.  
  35.             That's all that's needed.

  39.    If you are upgrading from v1.20 through 1.24, you should do the following
  40.    IN THIS ORDER:
  41.  
  42.        [ ] Copy the supplied UPDATE.EXE to your Mail Manager directory,
  43.            and run it once from DOS.  This updates your existing
  44.            MAILMAN.CFG file to the new format.   After doing this, you
  45.            can discard UPDATE.EXE.
  46.  
  47.        [ ] Make sure you're in your Mail Manager directory, and rename
  48.            MAILMAN*.* to MAILMGR*.*.  You can do this easily by typing
  49.            the following from the DOS command line:
  50.  
  51.                REN MAILMAN*.* MAILMGR*.*
  52.  
  53.        [ ] Replace files with the ones included in the imbedded MAILMGR.ZIP
  54.            as needed:
  55.  
  56.               - MAILMGR.EXE  (must)
  57.               - MAILCFG.EXE  (must)
  58.               - *.HLP        (optional - wording changes)
  59.               - *.MNU        (optional - wording changes)
  60.  
  61.        [ ] If you'd like to include ANSI color welcome and exit screens
  62.            for your users who are configured as such in RBBS-PC, create
  63.            a PRELOGC.RBS and/or EPILOGC.RBS, and place them in Mail
  64.            Manager's directory.
  65.  
  66.        [ ] Run MAILCFG.EXE, and set these additional options:
  67.  
  68.            - Whether or not to modify the date/time stamp on uploaded
  69.              replies.
  70.            - Location (City, State) of your BBS.
  71.            - Phone number of your BBS.
  72.  
  73.    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

  75.    If you are upgrading from a version older than v1.20, you should do the
  76.    following IN THIS ORDER:
  77.  
  78.       [ ] Back up your entire Mail Manager subdirectory, in case you
  79.           need anything additional from it later.
  80.  
  81.       [ ] Delete everything from it, EXCEPT the following files:
  82.  
  83.            MAILMAN.USR  (Mail Manager's internal user file)
  84.            MAILMAN.CFG  (Mail Manager's binary configuration file)
  85.            MAILMAN.BUL  (or whatever you named it, if it exists)
  86.            *.RBS        (the prelog and epilog screens)
  87.            *.MNU        (the main menu)
  88.            *.PRE        (Mail Manager's prelog screen)
  89.  
  90.           Almost everything else about Mail Manager has changed from
  91.           previous versions of the program.
  92.  
  93.       [ ] Copy UPDATE.EXE to your Mail Manager subdirectory, and run it
  94.           once from DOS to update the format of your configuration file.
  95.           When finished, you can discard UPDATE.EXE.

  97.       [ ] Make sure you're in your Mail Manager directory, and rename
  98.           MAILMAN*.* to MAILMGR*.*.  You can do this easily by typing
  99.           the following from the DOS command line:

  101.               REN MAILMAN*.* MAILMGR*.*
  102.  
  103.       [ ] De-compress the embedded MAILMGR.ZIP to your Mail Manager
  104.           subdirectory.
  105.  
  106.       [ ] Read the section in MAILMGR.DOC entitled "SYSOP-CONFIGURABLE
  107.           TEXT FILES", and update your files as needed.  Most notably:
  108.  
  109.                 MAILMGR.ARL
  110.                 MAILMGR.PRO
  111.                 MAILMGR.BUL
  112.  
  113.       [ ] Run MAILCFG.EXE, and insure that everything is set properly.
  114.           MOST NOTABLY the additional options for:
  115.  
  116.           - type of network to use in local mode,
  117.           - type of flow control (handshaking),
  118.           - path/filename of the list of new bulletins,
  119.           - path/filename of your FMS directory (if you were using NEWFILES),
  120.           - path/filename of PROTO.DEF,
  121.           - path/filename of the list of archivers,
  122.           - environment variable to use (DSZLOG or equivalent), and
  123.           - whether or not to modify date/time stamp on uploaded replies.
  124.           - Location (City, State) of your BBS.
  125.           - Phone number of your BBS.
  126.  
  127.    This should be sufficient to get you up and running with this release
  128.    of Mail Manager, but if you run into trouble, you'll want to carefully
  129.    study the section entitled "Installing Mail Manager from scratch" in
  130.    MAILMGR.DOC.
