disorder tracker 2, alpha release
copyright statix / psychic link 1995
This is a very early release of disorder tracker, mainly to see if anyone
is interested. sample saving is disabled in this version as is save as s3m;
anything else which doesn't work (like "about"...) just hasn't been written
yet :-) If you're interested and would like an update to a newer version
then contact me. feedback is really useful, and will help me improve later
versions. email to statix@sv.span.com. thankyou.

!!! NOTE run dt2setup before dt2, this sets up the supervga 132 column mode !!!
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
firstly, a little bit about it:
- up to 32 channels
- gus,sb,sb16
- 16bit samples
- loads pdm (disorder tracker 1), plm (disorder tracker 2), s3m, mod
- writes s3m and plm
- blah blah
the most obvious new feature (ive never seen in any other tracker) is that
patterns can be any length, AND ANY WIDTH (number of channels)... then even
cooler, you can overlap patterns any way you want... so you put bass in one,
drums in another, lead in another pattern, then just stack em all up, echo
them etc a bit like midi really... well that was the idea anyway.
also note that patterns can now have colours and names...
as a result there are two screens - the overview screen (time left to right,
channels top to bottom, patterns are coloured blocks). this screen is very
mouse operated (dont fear - im no mac user). push tab to go in to good old
hex-pattern edit mode. note that also new is that this is continuous! you
see everything, time runs through the song from top to bottom, no pattern
breaks - you can flow thru the whole song as a whole! i find this really
useful. push scrolllock to switch on tracking of the music as it plays.
other odd stuff: all of us in psychic link prefer to type in notes (push
c for c, d for d etc) rather than have the keyboard like a piano keyboard
(ala st3) - personal preference and i'll probably put a switch in to select.
as to customising the millions of keys... possible , since they are all
stored in a table in ram... but i wont get time until well after asm95...
cant think of much more to say at this early time of the morning. i make
no claims as to its stability, so dont trust it on really important work!
(its 25000+ lines of 100% assembler)
there are lots of lovely features hiding under keys , which i have
probably forgotten to document. its worth pressing to see! also many
areas of the screen can be clicked... i know you dont like mouse, but
almost all music editing itself is without mouse, only structural changes
need mouse.
16 bit samples sound a bit fuzzy on the gus for some reason... ill fix
that soon! also top of the list for additions, is a volume for a pattern,
so you can do echoes by writing out a one channel lead pattern, then
duplicating it and setting the echo values. in the overview screen it
might look like:
[00 Lead---------------------------]
[01 Lead Half Volume---------------]
[02 Lead 1/4 Volume----------------]
easy! echos just a few keypresses/clicks away!
below is some documentation i wrote very rapidy a few weeks ago for
another friend, listing a few keys:
;----------------------------------------------------------
RUN DT2SETUP FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!! OR IT WILL DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;----------------------------------------------------------
some brief info on how to use (in the order I think of it):
(I suggest you print this then try each thing while running dt2, with the
example file test.plm loaded)
use tab to switch screens.
on overview screen:
===================
drag patterns with mouse, shift drag to duplicate, ctrl drag to copy into
a new pattern. drag a pattern off the bottom to delete it.
drag on the ruler along the top to set a block, then ins and del to insert
and delete space in the song (used to insert or delete a section of song)
shift insert to copy a block (new feature)
f3/f2 load save like borland; menu shortcuts shown on the menu.
click the pan sliders with the left button to set initial pan, right
button to set current pan. initial pan positions are set when you play
the song from the beginning with F5 (see play menu).
click on the colour palette to change a pattern's colour.
click on the resizer (bottom right of patterns) to resize them
click on the number (top left of patterns) to change the pattern number
click on the name (normally blank, just right of number) to change the
pattern name, like "drums and bass" or whatever.
on pattern edit screen:
=======================
move around with cursors, ctrl left/right to move fast, shift cursors to
define a block. push esc to unblock. use ctrl up/down to select
a sample; while doing this spacebar=play. use , and . to tune a sample
up and down by semitones. click on a sample to edit it, or click-drag on
a sample to select a new one.
use insert and delete to put space/delete stuff in patterns (one channel only)
shift ins/del does all channels.
a new feature: move cursor to a blank area (with no pattern) and hold down
alt, and move. This drags out a new pattern.
Moving the cursor to the bottom right of any pattern and doing this will
change the patterns size; alt+cursors anywhere other than the bottom right
moves the pattern around.
you can click on most of the numbers down the bottom of the screen;
for example, click
"ibpm" to set the initial beats per minute, or "channels" to set the
number of channels. click on the word "Mute:" to change it to "Show:" or
"Poly:". Now you can click on the channel list just to the right to switch
on or off channels for that mode (mute, show or poly). Poly channels are wierd.
say no more. mute is obvious. "show" allows you to hide channels if they get
in the way.
Try also clicking the mask thing bottom left, the one with a note written
out on a blue background: "C#3 02 40 A00" or whatever. This allows you to
hide individual bits of notes, eg if you want to ignore volume you can switch
it off. (try it and see) (dont switch em all off, it crashes (bug/feature))
in the file selector, spacebar plays a sample before loading; f2,f3,f4,f5,f6
select frequency (8khz,11khz,16khz, 22khz etc)
remember: useful play keys (all in the play menu):
f5 = play song from start (if gus is screwing up, try this)
f8 = stop any playing
return = play note under cursor
n = play next line (use to single step thru music)
p = play from cursor
shift p = play block over and over again
well its almost as bad as wperfect in terms of keys... but its easy to get the
hang of it.
hope that covers most of the keys you need
;----------------------------------------------------------------------
right well hope you enjoy using it - i think it is actually quite good
once you get used to it (but then i would... ;-)) maybe you could even
write some music with it! :-) Any music you do write (with or without it)
I would like to hear some time anyway... so contact me!
