FILE_ID.DIZ, 602 bytes - BBS file description
VERSES.EXE, 1067404 bytes - Demo executable
EMF.NFO, 7223 bytes - EMF info file
VERSES.NFO, 7672 bytes - This file
Any other files that might be included in the archive are
not needed to run this demo. You may as well delete them.
MACHINE REQUIREMENTS
────────────────────┘
To run this demo, you need a machine with at least
- a 386sx CPU; 486 or faster recommended
- a VGA card; VLB or PCI recommended
- a disk drive; hard disk recommended
- a soundcard if you want music; GUS recommended
- 1 MB of free high memory; 2 MB recommended
- 450 kB of free base memory
WHY THIS RE-RELEASE
───────────────────┘
1) Shortly after releasing the original version we discovered that
the demo will hang if the machine is too fast, such as a P90. The
bug was trivial, but it never occurred during our beta testing, as
we had no access to a computer faster than a 486/66 back then. The
bug is now fixed.
2) Hate to admit it, but SoundBlaster(tm) is the de facto standard
outside the demo scene, and thus should be supported. We didn't
have a SoundBlaster driver ready for our new sound system at the
time we released the original version, nor did we want to hold the
demo back any longer, so we decided to drop the SB support and be
done with it. Later, after discovering the Pentium bug, we thought
that a re-release with SB/SBPro support might not be a bad idea.
3) The original version required a 512k GUS to play the music; we
managed to squeeze the sounds so that an off-the-shelf 256k GUS
now works fine.
4) Software volume control has been asked for, and we decided to
add it as a bonus feature: keypad - to decrease the volume, + to
increase.
5) Added command line option '!' for "no questions asked" mode; the
soundcard is autodetected and no confirmation is needed. This allows
to make a simple batch file to loop the demo over and over again.
6) The demo now works under QEMM7 and QDPMI.
TROUBLESHOOTING
───────────────┘
If the demo does not work, try removing all extended memory managers
(QEMM, EMM386), and use HIMEM only. A completely clean boot could be
a solution, too. Functionality under OS/2, Windows or similar is not
guaranteed in any way; the demo is designed to be run under MS-DOS.
If everything else fails, try the NoSound-option with a clean boot;
the music player is the main cause of incompatibility in almost any
demo, probably including this one.

CLOSING UP
──────────┘
Thanks to Tran for PMODE; this demo would not be without it.
Greetings to all you people who whined about the missing Sound
Bastard support; you win, we lose! Perhaps the demo scene isn't
big enough to fight against the Creative Labs reign, after all?
So, CL, how about sending us some free AWE32's and SDK's? :-)
