The error message "There was an Error in the Sound System..." during recording is caused by a conflict in the memory area of the computer. When you record your own voice Windows 95 or 98 saves the recording as a sound file in a temporary area of memory. When this memory area becomes full Windows 95 or 98 shuts down the recording utility to protect other programs that might be using that area of memory.
To free up more memory, disable any other programs that are running at the same time as Languages of the World and/or delete all temporary data files on the computer.
To delete Temporary Files
Click Start\Find\Files or folders
In the named box type: *.TMP
In the Look In: box make sure it has your Hard Drive (C:) listed
Click Find Now
When the seach is finished go under the Edit Menu and choose Select All
Then go under the file menu and select Delete.
This will delete all of the temporary files on your Hard Drive.
To close programs running in the background:
Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE once
A Close Program window will come up
There are two programs essential to Windows: Explorer and Systray
You can close all of the other programs listed there by highlighting them and clicking the End Task button.
You will have to re-open the Close Program window each time by pressing the CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys.
After doing this, your computer should have enough memory to run Languages of the World! without error.

3. LANGUAGE NOW REQUIRES CAPABILITY
When the error occurs, there is some problem with the registry, specifically the AVIFile entry in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. It seems that some installers (especially the new MediaPlayer) can destroy this entry, leaving you with a problem when you try to play non-interleaved AVI files. One of the registery entries (probably the AU setting) tells the system how to play this particular type of sound and if missing, causes the MMSYSTEM296 error. Interleaved AVI files do not need this AU setting, so they can play when the AVIFile key is destroyed.
At this web site is a step-by-step instruction guide to repairing the problem manually as well as a registration file that one can download to skip all the manual editing of the registery.
