  1.        Among the Hebrews each  person received  but a single
  2. name.  In  the  case of  boys this  was  conferred  upon the
  3. eighth day, in connection with the rite of circumcision.  To
  4. distinguish an  individual from  others of the  same name it
  5. was  customary  to add to  his own  proper name  that of his
  6. father  or  ancestors.   Sometimes  the  mother's  was  used
  7. instead.  Simple names in Hebrew,  as in all languages, were
  8. largely borrowed from nature; e.g. Deborah, "bee;" Tamar, "a
  9. palm tree;"  Jonah, "dove."   The majority of compound names
  10. have   special  religious   or  social  significance,  being
  11. compounded either  1) with  terms denoting  relationship, as
  12. "Abi"  or  "Ab",  [father],  as Abihud,  "father of praise,"
  13. Abimelech, "father  of the king;"  "Ben," [son], as  Benoni,
  14. "son of my sorrow," Benjamin, "son of the right hand;" or 2)
  15. with  names of  God, as "El,"  [God],  and  "Jah"  or "Yah",
  16. shortened from "Yahweh."
