  6.                   Adam, God made from the dust,
  7.                     But thought it best to make me first.
  8.  
  9.                   So I was made before the man,
  10.                     A part of God's most holy plan.
  11.  
  12.                   A living "soul" I became,
  13.                     But Adam failed to call my name.
  14.  
  15.                   I did my Maker's law obey,
  16.                     Nor ever went from it astray.
  17.  
  18.                   Thousands of miles, I go in fear,
  19.                     But seldom on earth do I appear.
  20.  
  21.                   For purpose wise, which God did see,
  22.                     He put a living "soul" in me.
  23.  
  24.                   A "soul" from me God did claim,
  25.                     And took from me the "soul" again.
  26.  
  27.                   So when from me the "soul" had fled,
  28.                     I was the same as when first made.
  29.  
  30.                   Without hands or feet I go,
  31.                     I travel on from pole to pole.
  32.  
  33.                   From my presence a rain does fly,
  34.                     A cloud I form beneath the sky.
  35.  
  36.                   I labor hard by day, by night,
  37.                     To fallen man I gave great light.
  38.  
  39.                   Thousands of people, young and old,
  40.                     Did by my death great light behold.
  41.  
  42.                   No right or wrong can I conceive,
  43.                     The Scripture I cannot believe.

  45.                   Although my name therein is found,
  46.                     They are to me an empty sound.

  48.                   Now when these lines you slowly read,
  49.                     Go search your Bible with all speed.

  64.                  The name of an ancient king then it will tell.

  98.             Busy once, but nevermore to hate or love again;
  99.             One of five, all like itself, in deadly deed united,
  100.             And yet delivering those in whom the LORD of Host delighted.

  107.                      It is a word I love to hear,
  108.                         Though not of English birth;
  109.                      A gentle word that fitly falls
  110.                         From hapless sons of earth -
  111.                      From patient souls that seek and love
  112.                      The help which cometh from above.

  114.                      No plainer words, no simpler words
  115.                         To baby lips belong;
  116.                      For turn this way, or turn it that
  117.                         You cannot turn it wrong,
  118.                      Any yet the holiest lips were heard
  119.                      To utter first this simple word.

  121.                      Two letters make this simple word;
  122.                         But oh! how much they mean,
  123.                      They touch on earth, they soar to heaven
  124.                         They span the gulf between;
  125.                      To speak it humbly it brings no shame

  136.                        He crushed this deadly enemy.

  138.                        Where Israel's host was put to shame,
  139.                        Because my first still unrevealed,
  140.                        Was lurking in their camp concealed.
  141.                        Upon my whole, pronounced by heaven,
  142.                        The knowledge of my first was given.
  143.                        The chosen people gathered round,
  144.                        And trembled at the dreadful sound.
