  1.                             MAINTENANCE

  4. Basically, the maintenance of the Organic Intensive Garden is simple
  5. and easy.
  6.  
  7. Just keep plenty of mulch on hand.  When the mulch depth decreases,
  8. add more.  If you have laid plenty of mulch by for the growing
  9. season, this won't be too difficult to spread.  Good preparation and
  10. planning is the key to luscious vegetables, without the slavery!
  11.  
  12. Bacteria in the soil works overtime to break down organic substances
  13. in the earth.   As this happens, the mulch will slowly break down,
  14. more will need to be added during the growing season.
  15.  
  16. Please don't begrudge this chore.  The more the bacteria works to 
  17. break down organic matter, the better your Organic Garden will be 
  18. safeguarded this year, and richer next year!
  19.  
  20. The mulch will not only feed your bacteria friends, but keep the 
  21. life-giving moisture around the base and roots of your prize
  22. vegetables, where it belongs.
  23.  
  24. Humidity is vital to plants, and mulch provides the necessary 
  25. environment for the ideal humid growing condition.
  26.  
  27. You may add more of the fresh fertilizer in July or August.  Simply
  28. spread on the top of the existing mulch.  For a more pleasant-
  29. smelling environment, spread a 2-inch layer of mulch on top of the
  30. freshly spread fertilizer.

  32. Use a mixture of herb powder and other natural insecticide powders
  33. to deter pests.  If applied at least once a week (or after a rain),
  34. this will keep your garden free from pests which were not invited
  35. to your vegetable banquet!

  37. Put aluminum foil collars around all the squash and curcurbit family,
  38. this will deter the dreaded cutworm.  Remember the disappointment of
  39. going out to the garden for a leisurely stroll and finding your prize
  40. young or half grown vegetable plants wilted and drooped over?  The
  41. collar and a well balanced herbal powder will prevent this.

  43. The nice thing about herbal powders is....you mix them the way you
  44. want for your particular needs.  If your formula is a little off...
  45. no problem, the extra herbs won't hurt a thing, and if you need a
  46. different herb...just add it.  In the end, your formula, for your
  47. garden, will be the best mixture and will protect the best.

  49. Experiment with different blends of natural protection,  you'll soon
  50. see the difference herbal protection makes, and you won't be sick
  51. after applying the herbal insecticide the way you probably would with
  52. the chemical insecticides!

  54. Follow these simple Organic Gardening rules and you and your garden
  55. will prosper!
