Handbook - Readme.1st - 1.37
1.36
This file contains information which became available (read: was
noticed) after the manual was printed.
To install HANDBOOK on a hard drive, create a suitable directory, such
as \HBK, and copy all the files in the distribution disks' root
directories into this directory. VDE (Video Display Editor) contains
several files in a subdirectory called \ZIP, however these files are not
required to run VDE. \ZIP contains a high-speed serial file transfer
utility distributed by Eric Meyer with VDE.
To install HANDBOOK on a 720 Kb or High-Density floppy disk, copy all
the files in the HANDBOOK distribution disks to the floppy.
To install HANDBOOK on a 360 Kb floppy disk, make a DISKCOPY of HANDBOOK
distribution disk 1 of 2 (if distributed on 360 Kb disks), or copy the
following files from the High Density disk (if distributed on 3.5"
media) to the floppy. All these files will fit in 360 Kb, but just
barely.
HANDBOOK.EXE
HBKPRT .EXE
HANDBOOK.PRT
HBKCFG .EXE (Optional - Required to change configuration)
HANDBOOK.HLP (Optional - Required for on-line help)
ITOH .FNT (Optional - Required to use Landscape Mode with
C.Itoh Prowriter printers)
EPMX .FNT (Optional - Required to use Landscape Mode with
Epson dot-matrix printers)
IBM .FNT (Optional - Required to use Landscape Mode with
IBM Proprinters)
Lest it be otherwise overlooked, note that VDE is Shareware, and must be
registered with Eric Meyer if used accordingly. Please refer to Mr.
Meyer's documentation on disk for details.
(D)os has been added to the Main Menu. This selection runs the DOS
Command Processor (normally COMMAND.COM) and gives you access to many
DOS commands without having to exit HANDBOOK. Enter "EXIT" at the DOS
prompt to return to HANDBOOK.
The HBKSET.EXE program is mentioned in the manual, but not documented.
It provides a method for users to reconfigure the various actions of
each of the printers supported by HANDBOOK. In general, it should be
unnecessary to use this program, however, one can alter the control
codes, margins, and graphic mode fonts during the printing process.
Two user configurable printers have been included in case the use of an
unsupported printer is required, or if a second configuration for a
supported printer is desired. The ascii codes displayed are decimal
numbers and are in the range 0-255. Alpha and special characters may be
entered directly, but the number characters 0-9 must be entered as ascii
codes 48-57. The last eight parameters affect the left and "center"
margins for front and back print passes. Mini-Manual Landscape mode
(MMl) uses the same left margin for both front and back; when using this
mode with a dot-matrix printer, the parameter adjusts the "center"
margin only.
To adjust or copy a graphic font, enter the font file name (itoh, epmx,
ibm). You can use the PageUp, PageDn, or character number to display
different characters, the arrow keys to move the cursor, and the space
bar to toggle character dots. You should copy an existing font to a new
file and modify the copy in case something goes awry. You should retain
the existing font HEIGHT when copying unless you are very clever. And
patient.
1.37
In version 1.37, two new dot commands are implemented:
.tr (Truncate) Disables word wrap. Each text line will be
truncated at the right margin. (This was requested to handle
imported data of which only the first thirty characters or
so were useful).
.wr (Wrap) Enables word wrap. Long text lines will be wrapped at
spaces to the next line(s). This is the default setting.
Version 1.37 fixes two bugs in the duplex print routines for laser
printers. There are now two different duplex codes in the printer
configuration file, one for short-edge binding, the other for long-edge
binding. When the number of pages in a duplex Handbook-mode document was
not a multiple of 8, the final sheet was printed incorrectly.
