  4. Thank you for evaluating ANSIPLUS.  This file briefly describes ANSIPLUS, lists
  5. the files included in the ANSIPLUS Shareware package, gives quick installation
  6. instructions, and describes recent changes made to ANSIPLUS.
  7.

  9. What is ANSIPLUS?
  10. ---- -- ---------
  11.  
  12. The ANSIPLUS console device driver integrates major console elements missing
  13. from DOS and the personal computer BIOS into a single compact device driver that
  14. can easily be controlled and personalized.  With ANSIPLUS installed:
  15.  
  16.  * User interaction with the DOS command shell and many applications will be
  17.    significantly improved.
  18.  
  19.  * Screen output will be faster than with DOS's ANSI and non-ANSI drivers.
  20.  
  21.  * The user will have complete control over colors and VGA/EGA capabilities.
  22.  
  23.  * Users of Windows 3 will have access to ANSIPLUS features in all windowed
  24.    and full screen DOS sessions.
  25.  
  26.  * The user will also benefit from all the other display and keyboard features
  27.    provided by ANSIPLUS.
  28.  
  29.  
  30. The ANSIPLUS enhanced DOS console device driver is tailored to take advantage of
  31. VGA and EGA display capabilities:
  32.  
  33.  * It automatically adapts to VGA or EGA screen modes, both text and graphics,
  34.    including extended modes with large numbers of lines and/or columns.  The
  35.    driver also automatically compensates for older video controllers with very
  36.    limited numbers of colors or shades (eg. CGA or monochrome boards).
  37.  
  38.  * In text and in 16-color VGA/EGA graphics display modes, the driver bypasses
  39.    the BIOS and writes directly to the video RAM, so it can operate much faster
  40.    than either the original DOS console driver or the DOS ANSI driver.
  41.  
  42.  * ANSIPLUS gives the user control over VGA/EGA palette registers and VGA DAC
  43.    registers to select and maintain colors using the video controller's full
  44.    capabilities.
  45.  
  46.  * Text character height can be selected in any VGA/EGA display mode, extending
  47.    user control to the number of lines per display page.
  48.  
  49.  * Smooth scrolling is provided as an option (requires a faster computer, eg.
  50.    80386 with 16-bit VGA).

  54. The ANSIPLUS driver efficiently integrates several useful console functions that
  55. in the past had to be provided by separate TSR programs or device drivers:
  56.  
  57.  * A screen saver monitors display, keyboard and mouse activity.
  58.  
  59.  * Scroll-back lets the user examine lines that have scrolled off the top of
  60.    the screen.
  61.  
  62.  * Fast screen output can be frozen and released with the Scroll Lock key.
  63.  
  64.  * Keyboard buffer size is increased and configurable.
  65.  
  66.  * Undesired repeat keys are suppressed and several other key processing
  67.    options are provided.
  68.  
  69.  * Keys can be added to the keyboard buffer under program control for later
  70.    consumption by programs.
  71.  
  72.  * A timer-controlled beep tone generator allows user customizable tones.
  73.  
  74. Other ANSIPLUS features include:
  75.  
  76.  * Menu driven, mouse controllable utilities that give the user full control
  77.    over selected colors, color palettes, border colors, video modes, text
  78.    height, key reassignment, beep tone definition, driver table sizes, and all
  79.    other configurable features.
  80.  
  81.  * Special loading options for XMS upper memory blocks or high memory area that
  82.    can reduce low memory requirements to below 4K.
  83.  
  84.  * Highlighting of user-typed keys when they are displayed by DOS on the screen
  85.    to give a clear visual separation of typed entries from computer output.

  87.  * Support for all DOS ANSI.sys escape sequences, plus additional ANSI/VT-100
  88.    escape sequences for clearing the screen, erasing lines, inserting and
  89.    deleting lines, and inserting and deleting characters.

  91.  * Free BBS updates.  Registered ANSIPLUS users can obtain free updates by
  92.    installing future Shareware versions of ANSIPLUS over their registered
  93.    copies.  The ANSIPLUS installation program will automatically register a
  94.    Shareware copy when it is installed on a disk that boots a registered copy.

  128. The documentation file, ANSIPLUS.doc, is a complete and up to date copy of the
  129. ANSIPLUS Shareware manual, except for the section on ANSIPLUS Escape Sequences,
  130. which are covered in detail only in the printed version.  The file is formatted
  131. for 80 characters per line and 60 lines per page, and uses no special characters
  132. or other printer control other than form feeds.

  136. Quick Installation Instructions
  137. ----- ------------ ------------
  138.  
  139. Before installing ANSIPLUS, or any other new device driver, be sure you have a
  140. bootable floppy disk as insurance against trouble getting your system to run
  141. after the device driver is installed.
  142.  
  143. The ANSIPLUS package includes an installation and configuration program called
  144. INSTALL.exe, which should properly handle most installations.  Context
  145. sensitive help (via the F1 key) is provided for all entries.  The following
  146. three examples illustrate using INSTALL to install ANSIPLUS:
  147.  
  148.  * If you received ANSIPLUS on a floppy disk and want to install it on your
  149.    hard disk, use the following installation procedure:
  150.  
  151.     (1) Set the default directory to the hard disk (ie. get a C> prompt).
  152.     (2) Insert the ANSIPLUS diskette in drive A: (or other floppy drive).
  153.     (3) Enter the following command:
  154.  
  155.             A:INSTALL
  156.  
  157.  * If you received ANSIPLUS as a ZIP file, use the following procedure:
  158.  
  159.     (1) Create a temporary sub-directory  on the hard disk to contain the
  160.         unzipped ANSIPLUS files. Move ANSIPLUS.zip to this directory and make
  161.         it be the default directory. This directory must be different from the
  162.         directory that will receive the installed ANSIPLUS files.
  163.     (2) Unzip the files into the directory with the command:
  164.  
  165.             PKUNZIP ANSIPLUS
  166.  
  167.     (3) Then enter the command:
  168.  
  169.             INSTALL
  170.  
  171.  * To install ANSIPLUS on bootable disk B:, from hard disk directory C:\APLUS,
  172.    enter the command:
  173.  
  174.             C:\APLUS\INSTALL B:

  176. International users should be aware of the following:
  177.  
  178.  * If you are using the KEYB program to set up your keyboard, the following
  179.    command MUST be executed after you load KEYB, otherwise most ANSIPLUS
  180.    keyboard related features will not work:
  181.  
  182.             SETAPLUS LINK KEYEVENT
  183.  
  184.    The INSTALL program will automatically add this command to your AUTOEXEC.bat
  185.    file if it finds a reference in it to KEYB.
  186.  
  187.  * If you are using the DISPLAY.sys device driver for code page switching, the
  188.    ANSIPLUS device driver must be installed before DISPLAY.sys in your
  189.    CONFIG.sys file.  The INSTALL program will also automatically handle this.
  190.

  195. Recent ANSIPLUS Changes
  196. ------ -------- -------
  197.  
  198.  9/22/93 Version 3.01 released.
  199.  
  200.  9/11/93 Independent key reassignment has been extended to the gray keys on
  201.          enhanced keyboards.  Gray keys that are also on the numeric keypad (for
  202.          example, Home or PageUp) may optionally share reassignment with or be
  203.          independent of the numeric keypad key.  Gray key reassignments may be
  204.          defined either in SETAPLUS or by ANSI escape sequence.
  205.  
  206.  9/07/93 The screen saver blanking time can now be changed while the system is
  207.          running, either with the new SETAPLUS BLANKTIME <minutes> command or
  208.          from the SETAPLUS menu.
  209.  
  210.  9/06/93 The "typematic" key delay can now be controlled by ANSIPLUS. Bootup
  211.          configuration is set with NEWAPLUS, and runtime changes are made using
  212.          the SETAPLUS menu or the new SETAPLUS DELAY <quartersecs> command.
  213.  
  214.  9/03/93 The SETAPLUS "Set Video Display Mode" menu now captures and displays
  215.          VESA mode numbers instead of OEM mode numbers for VESA-defined modes.
  216.  
  217.  8/29/93 SETAPLUS INTERRUPT reports should now handle more driver and TSR
  218.          combinations correctly.
  219.  
  220.  8/28/93 The screen saver now delays hooking Int 74h (PS/2 mouse events) or
  221.          testing the MS-Mouse on Int 33h until after one minute of idle time
  222.          passes (or half the screen saver blanking time, whichever is less).
  223.  
  224.  8/25/93 Key reassignment can now be applied either to keys entered through DOS
  225.          or to all keys entered through both DOS and BIOS Interrupt 16h.  This
  226.          new configurable feature now makes it possible to reassign keys for
  227.          applications that bypass DOS and use Int 16h for keyboard input.
  228.  
  229.  8/21/93 Bug fix: As a "last resort" test for system activity, the screen saver
  230.          was reading scan codes from the keyboard controller at port 60h.
  231.          Unfortunately, on some computers, reading this port during timer ticks
  232.          can interfere with processing of the arrow and page up/down keys on an
  233.          enhanced keyboard and with a PS/2-type mouse. Two changes were made to
  234.          eliminate the problem: reading of port 60h by the screen saver is now a
  235.          configurable feature (disabled by default); and when this feature is
  236.          enabled, one minute of complete inactivity must elapse before the saver
  237.          will read port 60h.
  238.  
  239.  8/03/93 Bug fix: To be consistent with the MS-DOS 4.0-6.0 ANSI.sys drivers, the
  240.          escape sequence parser now generates a zero parameter when an omitted
  241.          parameter is implied by the presence of a separator (so, for example,
  242.          "Esc [;20H" is now equivalent to "Esc [0;20H").
  243.  
  244.  7/19/93 Bug fix: SETCOLOR SCHEME HELP got stuck in an error message loop. Now,
  245.          the current color schemes in file SETCOLOR.sch are listed, or, if the
  246.          file cannot be found, a single error message is displayed.
  247.  
  248.  7/14/93 The driver now saves and restores the VGA graphics controller index
  249.          (port 3CEh) when analyzing video modes.

  252. Recent ANSIPLUS Changes (continued)

  254.  
  255.  6/22/93 Bug fixes: In CGA modes 4 or 5, the ANSIPLUS color palette was being
  256.          loaded into the PAL/DAC registers, which changed the colors from the
  257.          CGA 4-color scheme (black, magenta, cyan and white) to something else.
  258.          The driver also now reduces the foreground and background colors from
  259.          16 to 4 properly, assuring visibility of the foreground over the
  260.          background for DOS output in the 4-color CGA modes.
  261.  
  262.  6/09/93 Bug fixes: INSTALL/NEWAPLUS refused to register drivers with serial
  263.          numbers that start with zero. Also, when the registered ANSIPLUS.exe
  264.          driver was installed over the ANSIPLUS.sys Shareware driver, an
  265.          incorrect DEVICE= line would be left in CONFIG.sys if the user had
  266.          edited it to contain "ansiplus.sys" in lower case.
  267.  
  268.  5/29/93 Bug fix: If the "Prevent ANSI Key Reassignment Redefinition" feature
  269.          was enabled in NEWAPLUS, subsequent executions of NEWAPLUS would
  270.          terminate with a numeric overflow error. This feature happens to use
  271.          the 32nd feature bit, and operations to get/set this bit had a bug.
  272.  
  273.  5/25/93 Bug fix: SETCOLOR BORDER <colorname> was not setting the border to the
  274.          correct named color.
  275.  
  276.  5/23/93 The INSTALL/NEWAPLUS program now will not copy ANSIPLUS files unless it
  277.          was invoked by the INSTALL commmand. If ANSIPLUS is already installed,
  278.          running NEWAPLUS, even from a directory that contains INSTALL.inf, will
  279.          only allow changes to the boot configuration for a currently installed
  280.          driver. In the installation copying process, NEWAPLUS will now check to
  281.          be sure that the ANSIPLUS driver is not being installed in the same
  282.          directory as it is being copied from.
  283.  
  284.  5/23/93 Bug fix: In ANSICOM, when a file was inserted via the Insert key, the
  285.          screen was not updated properly after the insertion, and an execution
  286.          error would sometimes be reported by the program.
  287.  
  288.  5/17/93 Version 3.00 released.
  289.  
  290.  5/11/93 The keyboard repeat rate can now optionally be controlled by the
  291.          ANSIPLUS driver. Rates from 20 to 300 characters per second are
  292.          accepted by both the SETAPLUS and NEWAPLUS utility programs. The
  293.          feature requires an enhanced keyboard, and is disabled under Windows
  294.          because timing is imprecise when Windows is running.
  295.  
  296.  5/08/93 ANSIPLUS can now load itself into high memory (HMA) under DOS versions
  297.          before 5.0, or under DOS 5.0/6.0 whether DOS=HIGH is in CONFIG.sys or
  298.          not. The HMA is now allocated by calling DOS, by XMS driver call, or
  299.          by using the "VDISK.sys" method.
  300.  
  301.  5/03/93 Setting the text height by escape sequence or IOCTL call (eg., by MODE
  302.          command) can now preserve the contents of the screen using XMS memory.
  303.          This feature is automatically activated if preserving scroll-back data
  304.          with XMS memory is enabled.
  305.  
  306.  4/23/93 The NEWAPLUS, SETAPLUS, SETCOLOR and ANSICOM utility programs all now
  307.          support use of the mouse for menu and other selections.

  310. Recent ANSIPLUS Changes (continued)

  313.  4/20/93 INSTALL/NEWAPLUS now recognizes MS-DOS 6.0 CONFIG.sys files that have
  314.          menus and multiple configuration blocks. Installations require that the
  315.          user select the configuration block to receive ANSIPLUS. Updates to
  316.          reconfigure a driver will select from only those blocks that refer to
  317.          ANSIPLUS. Several other maintenance changes were also made to NEWAPLUS.
  318.  
  319.  4/13/93 A TSR-capable version of the ANSIPLUS driver, ANSIPLUS.exe, is now
  320.          supplied to registered users. This ANSIPLUS version may be loaded into
  321.          memory from the DOS command line, from a batch file (AUTOEXEC.bat), or
  322.          from CONFIG.sys with DEVICE=, DEVICEHIGH=, or INSTALL= commands.
  323.  
  324.  3/30/93 To provide additional user control over color schemes of 16-color
  325.          programs that set their own palettes or border colors, such as DBASE
  326.          III or EDIT.com, ANSIPLUS can now lock the color palette, preventing
  327.          such programs from loading the PAL/DAC and border color registers by
  328.          BIOS calls. This feature should only be used when all other means of
  329.          control fail. It can be enabled or disabled by the new LOCKPAL.com
  330.          and UNLOKPAL.com ANSIPLUS utilities in a batch file that executes the
  331.          application to be controlled.
  332.  
  333.  3/19/93 ANSIPLUS can now preserve scroll-back data across video mode changes or
  334.          when running graphics mode applications (including Windows) by saving
  335.          the data in XMS memory.  DOS sessions under Windows 3.1 can use this
  336.          feature as well if they can access XMS memory. The feature is enabled
  337.          or disabled in the Scrolling section of SETAPLUS or NEWAPLUS.
  338.  
  339.  3/17/93 Scroll-back capacity has been tripled for typical applications to about
  340.          500 lines by using compression techniques to store scroll-back data.
  341.  
  342.  3/08/93 Version 2.07 released.
  343.  
  344.  3/05/93 Using its own configurable-size key buffers, ANSIPLUS now supports key
  345.          stacking, which adds keys to the keyboard buffer for later consumption
  346.          by programs. The feature is controlled by SETAPLUS command, ANSIPLUS
  347.          escape sequence, or the 4DOS command shell KEYSTACK command. Users of
  348.          4DOS 4.0+ now do not need to load KSTACK.com if ANSIPLUS is installed.
  349.  
  350.  2/28/93 Added more control over key reassignment: a new configurable feature
  351.          can prevent changes to key reassignment definitions with the Esc [p
  352.          ANSI control sequence.  The driver also now generates an ominous tone
  353.          (like the theme from "Dragnet") when an attempt is made to redefine
  354.          keys if redefinition of key reassignment is disabled.

  359.  
  360.  2/23/93 When the DISPLAY.sys driver is used with Windows 3.0 or 3.1, the colors
  361.          and other variables of either ANSIPLUS or the DOS ANSI.sys driver are
  362.          not localized to each virtual 8086. This appears to be because Windows
  363.          only localizes the first CON driver it finds on the DOS device chain,
  364.          and this will be the most recent CON device installed, which is
  365.          DISPLAY.sys, not ANSIPLUS. Two system setup changes are required to
  366.          circumvent the problem:
  367.  
  368.             (1) Enter the following command to change the name of the ANSIPLUS
  369.                 driver in memory from "CON" to "CONAPLUS":
  370.  
  371.                     SETAPLUS LOCALCON
  372.  
  373.                 This command is automatically inserted into AUTOEXEC.bat by the
  374.                 ANSIPLUS INSTALL program when DISPLAY.sys is detected.
  375.  
  376.             (2) Add the following command to the [386Enh] section of the Windows
  377.                 SYSTEM.ini file:
  378.  
  379.                     LOCAL=CONAPLUS
  380.  
  381.                 This causes Windows to localize the ANSIPLUS driver to each
  382.                 virtual 8086. The SYSTEM.ini file is not altered by the ANSIPLUS
  383.                 INSTALL program.
  384.  
  385.          These setup changes are totally unnecessary if you are not using the
  386.          DISPLAY.sys driver.
  387.  
  388.  2/21/93 Apparently, some 256-color drivers for Windows assume that the OEM
  389.          256-color palette has been loaded when the 256-color mode was selected,
  390.          and never define the colors that Windows will use.  Some DOS 256-color
  391.          applications also have the same problem.  When using such a Windows
  392.          driver or DOS application, if the ANSIPLUS default colors are loaded on
  393.          mode set, the wrong colors could be displayed.  Because of this,
  394.          features have been added to the driver and utility programs to allow
  395.          control over loading the ANSIPLUS colors in DOS and Windows 256-color
  396.          modes.  By default, ANSIPLUS now will not load its colors when a
  397.          256-color mode is selected under Windows.

  399.  2/15/93 Version 2.06 released.
  400.  
  401.  2/13/93 Minor changes to SETAPLUS: maintain color selection when shifting from
  402.          256-color to 16-color video modes, and improve listing of Alt and Ctrl
  403.          keys in SETAPLUS LISTKEYS option.
  404.  
  405.  2/10/93 Added a feature to use BIOS calls for text mode scrolling instead of
  406.          directly moving data in the video display RAM. This may help in those
  407.          unusual cases where other drivers or TSRs need to be informed when the
  408.          screen is scrolled up.
  409.  
  410.  2/10/93 Changed the default status for the graphics mode pseudo-cursor to be
  411.          disabled.  Also added a separate feature to control use of the pseudo-
  412.          cursor when in 256-color graphics modes (also disabled as default).

  418.  1/25/93 When the screen saver is enabled, the screen can now be blanked
  419.          immediately by entering the Alt-Ctrl-Scroll Lock key combination.
  420.  
  421.  1/06/93 Bug fix: Improved handling of palette in 256-color modes, particularly
  422.          when the OEM palette is being used.
  423.  
  424.  1/05/93 Bug fix: Automatic registration of Shareware version when installed
  425.          over a Registered version did not always work.
  426.  
  427. 12/02/92 Version 2.05 released.
  428.  
  429. 11/29/92 Changes for international support and using DISPLAY.sys: INSTALL/
  430.          NEWAPLUS now loads ANSIPLUS before DISPLAY.sys in CONFIG.sys because
  431.          MODE CON CP SELECT command will not work correctly if ANSIPLUS is
  432.          installed after DISPLAY.sys; and minor cosmetic changes to SETCOLOR and
  433.          SETAPLUS screens when not using U.S. code page 437.
  434.  
  435. 11/21/92 Revised INSTALL/NEWAPLUS to recognize reference to the KEYB TSR (for
  436.          international keyboard users) in AUTOEXEC.bat.  The install process
  437.          will then automatically add a SETAPLUS LINK KEYEVENT command to
  438.          AUTOEXEC.bat following KEYB if this command was not already there.
  439.          See the next item for further explanation.
  440.  
  441. 11/19/92 Added the capability to relink ANSIPLUS interrupts after they have been
  442.          stolen by TSR's such as MS-DOS KEYB.  The KEYB program grabs the key
  443.          event interrupt (Int 09h), without passing calls through to whatever
  444.          was installed before it (ie., to ANSIPLUS).  This has prevented most
  445.          ANSIPLUS keyboard functions, such as scroll-back, scroll lock, etc.,
  446.          from working correctly with international keyboards.  Now, to restore
  447.          ANSIPLUS's access to the key event interrupt, the following command
  448.          must be entered after KEYB has been loaded:
  449.  
  450.             SETAPLUS LINK KEYEVENT
  451.  
  452.          This command should be placed in AUTOEXEC.bat immediately after KEYB.
  453.  
  454. 11/19/92 The programs connected to any system interrupt, including those used by
  455.          ANSIPLUS, can be identified using the new SETAPLUS command:
  456.  
  457.             SETAPLUS INTERRUPT <number> [<number> ...]
  458.  
  459.          where <number> is any hexadecimal interrupt number.  For example,
  460.          SETAPLUS INTERRUPT 2F would list the programs connected to the
  461.          Multiplex interrupt, number 2Fh.  This listing is not guaranteed to be
  462.          correct in all cases, but has been remarkably accurate in our
  463.          experience.

  465. 11/18/92 Two screen saver changes should blank the screen more appropriately:
  466.          Relaxed the test for a fast timer tick a little to allow the screen to
  467.          blank when running applications with extensive timer tick processing,
  468.          but not to blank when running games that speed up the timer, such as
  469.          Flight Simulator.  Also removed, except for XT-type machines, the
  470.          requirement before blanking that the Int 09h vector point to the same
  471.          place as when the last Int 09h key event was intercepted.

  474. Recent ANSIPLUS Changes (continued)

  476.  
  477. 11/09/92 Changed SETCOLOR and SETAPLUS utilities to display menus using video
  478.          page 0 instead of page 1 when not running on a VGA or EGA.  This should
  479.          make the menus visible on Hercules-type boards that seem to have a
  480.          problem accessing higher video pages.
  481.  
  482. 11/09/92 Bug fix: Insert key caused lockup when screen was scrolled back.
  483.  
  484. 10/21/92 Increase delay times for direct port access to video controller.
  485.  
  486. 10/20/92 Bug fix: Generic IOCTL was never called by DOS because the driver

  540.          scroll-back appeared to be inoperative because Windows 3.1 failed to

  543.          correctly.  The driver is now able to cause the windowed screen to be

  591.          25x80 text, a bug caused the scroll-back data to be scrambled when

  595.          erroneously recognized as repeat keys, causing all digit keys to be
