  13.      network and may be gated to any network so long as the moderator is

  20.      This conference is dedicated to Eugene Wesley Roddenberry and others
  21.       like him, who push back the curtain of darkness to show mankind's
  22.                     potential to the rest of the world...

  26. Let's all remember the basic guidelines for participation in this conference:
  27.  
  28. 1.  Be POLITE!  I think that speaks for itself.  (If you _must_ be impolite,
  29.     do it elsewhere.)  The moderator defines what is and is not polite.  An
  30.     ancilliary rule is to BE TOLERANT.  That doesn't mean you have to agree
  31.     with everyone, but you MUST be tolerant of THEIR beliefs!
  32.  
  33. 2.  This conference is devoted to discussing almost every aspect of the Star
  34.     Trek phenomenon.  This includes (but is not limited to) the original
  35.     series (TOS), the animated series (TAS), the motion pictures, The Next
  36.     Generation (TNG), the upcoming new series Deep Space Nine (DS9), and the
  37.     many aftermarket products such as novels, Christmas ornaments, records,
  38.     etc.

  40.     There are two aspects of the Star Trek phenomenon that _are_ off-topic
  41.     here:  Role playing games, and tech fandom (a "sub-culture" of Star Trek
  42.     fandom which is mainly concerned with the technical aspects of Star
  43.     Trek).  These two exceptions are based on the fact that these topics
  44.     generate enough traffic on their own to justify separate conferences;
  45.     their echo tags are STARTREK and TREKTECH respectively.  (These topics
  46.     also qualify as exceptions to the "aftermarket products" category, as
  47.     stated above.)

  49.     Discussions of OTHER conferences, their rules, moderator actions, or
  50.     users is strictly off topic.
  51.  
  52. 3.  Cross-posting between conferences (so long as the subject material is on
  53.     topic) is permitted with *ADVANCE* moderator approval only.  Currently,
  54.     there are authorized cross-postings from the STTNG conference, as well as
  55.     the Usenet rec.arts.startrek.info newsgroup.
  56.  
  57. 4.  STAY ON TOPIC!  We are here to talk about Star Trek, old and new!  If you
  58.     can't stay topical, please move your conversation to another conference,
  59.     or to NetMail.  Minor deviations from the Trek universe are tolerated,
  60.     but frowned upon.  Please moderate yourselves in this regard and avoid
  61.     abusing the privilege.

  63. 5.  Messages posted here are, BY DEFINITION, public.  If you want to chat
  64.     with someone privately, use NetMail.
  65.  
  66. 6.  If you have some "inside" information which may be controversial, STATE
  67.     YOUR SOURCES OR STOP YOUR FINGERS!  It's hard to keep everything running
  68.     smoothly if there is a rumor-war going on.  If you can't or won't state
  69.     your sources for your information, then don't say anything at all.

  71. 7.  Don't post ads here!  This conference costs sysops money to move all over
  72.     the world.  You probably wouldn't want to involuntarily pay for someone
  73.     ELSE's ads, so please give the sysops here the same consideration!  The
  74.     same prohibition goes for commercial publicity, fan groups, or any person
  75.     or group wishing to exploit the distribution of this conference.

  77.     (If you want your Star Trek related group or product mentioned on this
  78.     echo, send the information VIA NETMAIL to the moderator, who will
  79.     determine if it is appropriate for inclusion in the weekly Star Trek
  80.     Source Guide posting.)

  82. 8.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't call for votes on which series is better, or
  83.     which Enterprise is better, or what episode is the most popular, or which
  84.     character is better, etc... it only wastes bandwidth in the conference
  85.     and is a non-representative sample at the very best!

  87. 9.  Occasionally, when an exceptional show which relies on surprise is aired
  88.     (such as the resolution of a season-ending "cliffhanger"), the moderator
  89.     will request that no spoilers for the show be posted until a certain
  90.     date.  PLEASE comply when this happens, as some people don't WANT to know
  91.     what's going to happen ahead of time!

  93. 10. Please use the spoiler protocol for shows until one week after satellite
  94.     uplink time.  Spoiler protocol calls for the word "SPOILER" (in caps) to
  95.     be the first word in the subject line along with what it spoils, for
  96.     example: "SPOILER: I, Borg".  The text of the message should have at
  97.     least 25 lines of NON-spoiler data (or just blank lines) before any
  98.     spoiler information.

  100. 11. READ all the rules again (especially #1)!

  104. Special topics to watch out for...
  105.  
  106. 1.  Religion:  Seeing that this is a topic which almost universally degrades
  107.                into a posturing and preaching match, this topic should ONLY
  108.                be addressed as it DIRECTLY pertains to a Star Trek episode.
  109.  
  110. 2.  Abortion:  Another hot button. Again, this topic should ONLY be addressed
  111.                as it DIRECTLY pertains to a Star Trek episode.
  112.  
  113. 3.  Homosexuality:  This topic is probably THE most inflammatory topic ever
  114.                     encountered in the TREK conference. As such, it should
  115.                     ONLY be addressed as it DIRECTLY pertains to a Star Trek
  116.                     episode.

  122. Problem resolution steps:
  123.  
  124. If you have a problem on this conference, please do send NetMail (preferred)
  125. or EchoMail to the moderator at the address below.  The moderator and vice-
  126. moderators are here to help, as well as maintain a sembalance of order here.
  127. Our rules are few, considering the scope of the conference, and are here to
  128. make your conference experience more pleasant.
  129.  
  130. If you are violating any of the guidelines of this conference, the following
  131. steps will occur:
  132.  
  133. 1.  You will be notified by either the moderator (or one of the vice-
  134.     moderators) that you have violated one or more of the conference
  135.     guidelines, and that you should correct the problem.  At this point, the
  136.     moderator notifying you will begin a log of all messages from you which
  137.     violate the conference guidelines.
  138.  
  139. 2.  If the problem does not cease within a reasonable time frame (allowing
  140.     for EchoMail traffic delays, etc.), you will be warned again, and the
  141.     moderator (if he is not the one warning you) will be notified.
  142.  
  143. 3.  If the problem persists after the second warning, punitive action will be
  144.     taken by the moderator, up to and including removing your access to this
  145.     conference.
