  1. Welcome to LASERPUB, the International Laser Publishing
  2. Conference of Fidonet. Each month we post a summary of
  3. Conference Guidelines and Traditions, so that new users may more
  4. smoothly get acquainted with our forum on electronic publishing
  5. topics -- and so that we all may maintain a friendly atmosphere
  6. which reminds us that we are not only typesetters and graphic
  7. designers, but also PEOPLE.

  10. GENERAL CONFERENCE GUIDELINES
  11.  
  12. (1) TOPICALITY. While our main focus is on tools and techniques
  13. of computerized publishing, this topic naturally leads to many
  14. related topics concerning the history of printing and
  15. publishing; multimedia techniques and "teletypesetting" (the
  16. delivery of typeset documents by computerized telecommunications);
  17. the craft of language; and so forth.

  19. If a thread seems to be getting a bit afield, then participants
  20. or even "innocent bystanders" might suggest moving it to netmail
  21. or another echo.

  23. (2) "THINK GLOBALLY." Participants should keep in mind that
  24. LASERPUB is an INTERNATIONAL echo: your messages circulate
  25. around the world. This has some interesting implications: for
  26. example, be sure to provide adequate national and even
  27. international information such as telephone area codes, postal
  28. address codes, and so forth.

  30. (3) EVERYONE IS WELCOME. LASERPUB is emphatically a democratic
  31. and egalitarian community of people devoted to the arts of
  32. typography and page design. If you are just starting to explore
  33. this field, please feel free to join us! If you happen to use a
  34. "lower-end" application such as First Publisher, Microsoft
  35. Publisher, or WordPerfect, you are just as valued as our users
  36. of the most sophisticated typesetting and composition systems.
  37. We are all "just learning"!

  39. (4) TWITTICISMS. Many users have their "twits" -- applications,
  40. techniques, or topics which are simply not of interest to them.
  41. The best solution is to "post and let post" -- read and write
  42. messages on LASERPUB topics you like, and let other users do the
  43. same. If a message is clearly off topic or personally abusive, the
  44. most effective policy is generally to ignore it.

  47. LASERPUB TRADITIONS
  48.  
  49. (1) THE KVETCH. While "platform wars" ("My system is better than
  50. yours") are counterproductive, we encourage reasoned
  51. comparisons, preferences, and especially kvetches. The KVETCH,
  52. that art form pioneered by LASERPUB maven Mike Arst, is a
  53. creative complaint or lament about your favorite application,
  54. operating environment, etc. It is an electronic publishing
  55. "slice of life" which at once educates and entertains.

  57. (2) HUMOR. Friendly and humorous colloquies have been associated
  58. with the art of typesetting since the epoch of Aldus Manutius,
  59. Desiderius Erasmus, and Marguerite of Navarre. Humor is the
  60. leading of our main text on typography -- and generous leading
  61. promotes comprehension.
