  32. 1.  Q. Why does DoubleSpace create a drive identified by the letter H
  33.        when I have drives A, B, and C only?
  34.           
  35.     A. To avoid conflicts with existing drives, DoubleSpace examines
  36.        the existing drive assignments during installation to find the
  37.        highest drive letter currently in use. It then skips the next
  38.        four letters and assigns the fifth letter to the new
  39.        DoubleSpace drive.
  40.     
  41.        For example, if your computer has two floppy disk drives (A and
  42.        B) and a hard disk drive (C), DoubleSpace locates the highest
  43.        letter (C); skips drive letters D, E, F, and G; and then
  44.        assigns drive letter H for its own use.
  45.     
  46.        For more information, refer to the "Freeing Disk Space" chapter
  47.        in the "Microsoft MS-DOS 6 User's Guide."

  49. 2.  Q. I am currently using a third-party disk-compression software
  50.        package and now want to convert to DoubleSpace. How can I do
  51.        this?
  52.  
  53.     A. To convert to a DoubleSpace drive, use the following steps:
  54.        
  55.        1. Install the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade if you haven't already done so.
  56.        
  57.        2. Back up your program and data files on all drives using
  58.           Microsoft Backup or a third-party utility.
  59.        
  60.        3. Create a bootable MS-DOS floppy disk. To do this, insert the
  61.           original MS-DOS 6 Setup Disk 1 in either drive A or drive B,
  62.           type the following command, and then press ENTER
  63.              
  64.              drive:setup /f
  65.        
  66.           where "drive" is the floppy disk drive containing Setup Disk
  67.           1.
  68.           
  69.            Important: After you type the above command and Setup
  70.            prompts you to insert a disk to create the startup floppy
  71.            disk, you MUST create that disk in drive A. Also, be sure
  72.            that you choose to install on drive A.
  73.        
  74.        4. Verify that the disk you have just created is bootable by
  75.           inserting the disk in drive A and pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL. If
  76.           your system starts up, continue with the next step. If it
  77.           does not, reboot from your hard disk and repeat step 3 until
  78.           you have created a bootable floppy disk.
  79.        
  80.        5. Format the drive with the compressed volume file (CVF). To
  81.           do this, type the following command at the A: prompt and
  82.           then press ENTER
  83.              
  84.              format drive:
  85.        
  86.           where "drive" is the floppy disk drive containing the CVF.
  87.           
  88.            Note: If you are formatting drive C, use the /s switch with
  89.            the format command to make the hard disk bootable.
  90.           
  91.        6. If you formatted a drive other than C, skip to step 7. If
  92.           you formatted drive C, you must reinstall the MS-DOS 6
  93.           Upgrade. To do this, insert Setup Disk 1 in drive A or drive
  94.           B, type the following command, and then press ENTER
  95.        
  96.              drive:setup
  97.        
  98.           where "drive" is the floppy disk drive containing Setup Disk
  99.           1.
  100.           
  101.           Follow the steps on the screen to install the MS-DOS 6
  102.           Upgrade.
  103.        
  104.            Note: If you used Microsoft Backup for MS-DOS to back up
  105.            your compressed drive, be sure to reinstall Backup for MS-
  106.            DOS when Setup prompts you to do so. (You need this program
  107.            to restore your backup disks.)
  108.        
  109.        7. Install DoubleSpace. To do this, type "dblspace" at the MS-
  110.           DOS command prompt, press ENTER, and then follow the steps
  111.           on the screen.

  113.            Note: For more information on DoubleSpace, refer to the
  114.            "Freeing Disk Space" chapter in the "Microsoft MS-DOS 6
  115.            User's Guide" or type "help dblspace" (without the
  116.            quotation marks) at the MS-DOS command prompt and press
  117.            ENTER. For more information on Microsoft Backup, refer to
  118.            the "Managing Your System" chapter in the "Microsoft MS-DOS
  119.            6 User's Guide."

  121.        8. Restore the files from your backup disks by using Microsoft
  122.           Backup or your third-party backup utility. If you are using
  123.           a third-party backup utility, you must install the software
  124.           onto the hard disk. Refer to the manufacturer's
  125.           documentation for the procedure to do this.

  127. 3.  Q. I installed DoubleSpace and now each time I enter Microsoft
  128.        Windows I receive the error "Corrupt Swapfile Warning." I have
  129.        set up my permanent swap file many times, but I continue to
  130.        receive this error. How can I correct this problem?
  131.     
  132.     A. In this case, the error "Corrupt Swapfile Warning" probably
  133.        means your permanent swap file is being created on a
  134.        DoubleSpace compressed volume. Windows cannot create a
  135.        permanent swap file on a compressed volume. To correct this
  136.        problem, set the permanent swap file to a noncompressed drive.
  137.  
  138.        Windows contains code to detect and avoid compressed volumes
  139.        created with third-party software. However, Windows cannot
  140.        detect compressed volumes created with DoubleSpace because
  141.        Windows' release predates the release of DoubleSpace.
  142.     
  143.        For more information, refer to the "Freeing Disk Space" chapter
  144.        in the "Microsoft MS-DOS 6 User's Guide," or type "help
  145.        dblspace" (without the quotation marks) at the MS-DOS command
  146.        prompt and press ENTER.

  148. 4.  Q. I am trying to run Windows 3.0 in real mode so that I can
  149.        change my permanent swap file with SWAPFILE.EXE. Every time I
  150.        try, I receive the error message "Unsupported DOS version;
  151.        upgrade to DOS version 3.1 or higher." What causes this error?
  152.     
  153.     A. This is an incorrect message. To correct this problem, run the
  154.        SPATCH.BAT file, which is located on your original MS-DOS 6
  155.        Upgrade disks.
