  39. 1.  Q. When I run the Setup program for the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade, my video
  40.        display is unreadable; either the instruction lines are
  41.        truncated or the screen text is unreadable. How can I correct
  42.        this problem?
  43.     
  44.     A. If you are currently running a version of MS-DOS earlier than
  45.        6.0 and your monitor is not displaying the setup screens
  46.        properly, use the following steps:
  47.     
  48.        1. If you have not already done so, quit Setup by pressing the
  49.           F3 function key twice.
  50.        
  51.        2. Insert Setup Disk 1 in drive A or drive B. At the MS-DOS
  52.           command prompt, type the following command and then press
  53.           ENTER
  54.     
  55.              drive:\setup /i
  56.     
  57.           where "drive" is the letter of the drive containing Setup
  58.           Disk 1. The /i switch disables automatic hardware detection.
  59.           Since display problems can be caused by incorrect hardware
  60.           settings, make sure you enter the correct display type when
  61.           Setup prompts you for it.
  62.           
  63.        If the setup screens still display incorrectly, you may need to
  64.        manually install MS-DOS 6. For instructions on how to do this,
  65.        refer to pages 196-197 in the "Microsoft MS-DOS 6 User's
  66.        Guide."
  67.  
  68. 2.  Q. Setup repeatedly prompts me to insert the same disk or
  69.        indicates that my Uninstall disk is not the correct disk. How
  70.        should I troubleshoot this problem?
  71.  
  72.     A. Your computer may contain memory-resident or disk-caching
  73.        programs that prevent Setup from correctly reading the floppy
  74.        disk. Remove or remark out any memory-resident programs that
  75.        are started from the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file, restart
  76.        the computer, and then run Setup again. If the problem
  77.        persists, you may be able to successfully install MS-DOS by
  78.        using the following steps:
  79.     
  80.        1. Create a temporary directory on your hard disk. To do this,
  81.           type the following at the MS-DOS command prompt and then
  82.           press ENTER
  83.     
  84.              md drive:\directory
  85.           
  86.           where "drive" is the disk drive on which you are creating
  87.           the temporary directory, and "directory" is the name of that
  88.           directory. For example, to create a temporary directory
  89.           named TEMP on drive C, type the following at the MS-DOS
  90.           command prompt and then press ENTER:
  91.           
  92.              md c:\temp
  93.        
  94.        2. Use the COPY command to copy all files from the MS-DOS 6
  95.           Upgrade disks to the temporary directory. To do this, insert
  96.           Setup Disk 1 in drive A or drive B. At the MS-DOS command
  97.           prompt, type the following command and then press ENTER
  98.              
  99.              copy drive:\*.* destination
  100.              
  101.           where "drive" is the floppy disk drive containing Setup Disk
  102.           1 and "destination" is the drive location and directory name
  103.           of the temporary directory.
  104.        
  105.           For example, if Setup Disk 1 is in drive A and you are
  106.           copying to the TEMP directory on drive C, type the following
  107.           command:
  108.        
  109.              copy a:\*.* c:\temp
  110.        
  111.           Repeat this step for each MS-DOS 6 Upgrade disk.
  112.     
  113.        3. Run the Setup program for the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade from the
  114.           temporary directory.
  115.  
  116. 3.  Q. Can I install the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade on my IBM(R) PS/1(R)
  117.        computer?
  118.  
  119.     A. You can upgrade to MS-DOS 6 if you have an IBM PS/1; however,
  120.        if your IBM PS/1 is configured to boot from read-only memory
  121.        (ROM), you must first change your system configuration so that
  122.        it can boot from your hard disk (usually drive C). To do this,
  123.        use the procedure in the section titled "Your computer is an
  124.        IBM PS/1, and you cannot start MS-DOS" on pages 203-204 in the
  125.        "Microsoft MS-DOS 6 User's Guide."

  127. 4.  Q. Can I install the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade on my Tandy(R) computer?
  128.     
  129.     A. You can upgrade to MS-DOS 6 if you have a Tandy computer;
  130.        however, if you have one of the Tandy computers listed below,
  131.        it is possible that your computer uses ROMDOS, which must be
  132.        disabled before you can install the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade. Methods
  133.        for disabling ROMDOS vary depending on the model of Tandy
  134.        computer you have. For instructions on disabling ROMDOS,
  135.        contact Tandy Technical Support.

  146. 5.  Q. I am using the Stacker(R) disk-compression program. When I run
  147.        MS-DOS 6 Setup, I receive the message "Your computer uses a
  148.        disk-compression program and does not have enough free disk
  149.        space to set up MS-DOS." How should I troubleshoot this
  150.        problem?
  151.  
  152.     A. This error occurs if Stacker has allocated so much disk space
  153.        on your primary MS-DOS partition for storing the Stacker volume
  154.        file (SVF) that there is inadequate disk space to install MS-
  155.        DOS 6. To work around this problem, you must increase the free
  156.        space on your uncompressed drive. For instructions on
  157.        increasing the size of the uncompressed drive, refer to page
  158.        186 in the "Microsoft MS-DOS 6 User's Guide," consult your
  159.        Stacker documentation, or contact STAC Electronics Technical
  160.        Support.
  161.  
  162. 6.  Q. I think that one of my MS-DOS 6 Upgrade disks is defective.
  163.        What should I do?
  164.  
  165.     A. To determine if an original MS-DOS 6 Upgrade disk is defective,
  166.        use the following steps:
  167.        
  168.        1. Insert the disk that you suspect is defective in drive A or
  169.           drive B. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following
  170.           command and then press ENTER
  171.        
  172.              copy drive:\*.* nul
  173.              
  174.           where "drive" is the letter of the floppy disk drive
  175.           containing the disk.
  176.        
  177.           This command forces MS-DOS to read all the files on the disk
  178.           and copy them to the NUL device.
  179.           When NUL is used as a device for testing purposes, files
  180.           copied to it are discarded without being written to the
  181.           disk.
  182.        
  183.        2. If you receive an error message, such as "Data error
  184.           reading" or "General failure reading," during the copy
  185.           process, the disk is probably defective. To order a
  186.           replacement disk, call Microsoft Consumer Sales at (800) 426-
  187.           9400.
  188.        
  189.           If you do not receive an error during the copy process, the
  190.           disk is probably not defective. If you continue to encounter
  191.           problems while installing the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade, refer to the
  192.           "Diagnosing and Solving Problems" chapter in the "Microsoft
  193.           MS-DOS 6 User's Guide." This chapter addresses a number of
  194.           issues that can cause problems during Setup.
  195.  
  196. 7.  Q. I want to upgrade my Digital Research(R) DOS (DR DOS)
  197.        installation to MS-DOS 6. How should I do this?
  198.     
  199.     A. You can upgrade from DR DOS to MS-DOS 6; however, before you
  200.        run Setup, you should first review the following precautions
  201.        and carry out those applicable to your system:
  202.     
  203.        -  If you have any security features, including password
  204.           protection, disable them. For more information, refer to
  205.           page 187 in the "Microsoft MS-DOS 6 User's Guide."
  206.        
  207.            Warning: The MS-DOS 6 Upgrade Setup program cannot create
  208.            an Uninstall disk if your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  209.            is password protected. If any of your DR DOS system files
  210.            or your DR DOS directory is password protected, use the DR
  211.            DOS PASSWORD command to disable password protection before
  212.            you install MS-DOS 6.
  213.        
  214.        -  If you have the DELWATCH delete-protection program installed
  215.           on your computer, you must disable DELWATCH and purge your
  216.           deleted files before you install MS-DOS 6. For the procedure
  217.           to do this, refer to pages 187-188 in the "Microsoft MS-DOS
  218.           6 User's Guide."
  219.        
  220.        -  If your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file uses any conditional
  221.           DR DOS commands (such as ? or GOTO), remove those commands
  222.           and adjust the order of the remaining commands accordingly.
  223.        
  224.        -  If your CONFIG.SYS file contains the DR DOS CHAIN command,
  225.           remove it and adjust the other CONFIG.SYS commands
  226.           accordingly.
  227.        
  228.        -  If your computer uses disk compression, but drive C is not
  229.           compressed, run Setup as described in the "Getting Started"
  230.           chapter of the "Microsoft MS-DOS 6 User's Guide." When Setup
  231.           displays the message "Your CONFIG.SYS file contains commands
  232.           that are not valid MS-DOS commands," select the Modify
  233.           Original Files option.
  234.        
  235.        -  If your hard disk is compressed, carry out the procedure in
  236.           the section of the README.TXT file titled "Setup detects
  237.           that your computer uses DR DOS."
  238.        
  239.        -  If Setup displays the message "Your computer uses a disk-
  240.           compression program and does not have enough free disk space
  241.           to set up MS-DOS," you must convert your DR DOS 6 SuperStor
  242.           (TM) (SSTOR) compressed drive to an MS-DOS 6 DoubleSpace
  243.           drive using the procedure below. This is necessary because
  244.           the DR DOS 6 SuperStor utility does not provide the
  245.           functionality for increasing the size of your uncompressed
  246.           host drive.
  247.        
  248.           1. Using the DR DOS BACKUP command, back up your program and
  249.              data files. For more information on using the BACKUP
  250.              command, refer to your DR DOS documentation.
  251.           
  252.           2. Insert the MS-DOS 6 Setup Disk 1 in drive A or B and use
  253.              the SETUP command with the /f switch. For example, if you
  254.              insert Setup Disk 1 in drive A, type the following at the
  255.              MS-DOS command prompt and then press ENTER:
  256.           
  257.                 a:setup /f
  258.                 
  259.               Important: After you type the above command and Setup
  260.               prompts you to insert a disk to create the startup
  261.               floppy disk, you MUST create that disk in drive A. Also,
  262.               be sure that you choose to install on drive A.
  263.           
  264.           3. Make sure that the startup disk you created in step 2 is
  265.              in drive A and then restart your computer by pressing
  266.              CTRL+ALT+DEL.
  267.           
  268.           4. Use the MS-DOS FORMAT command to reformat all your
  269.              drives. When you format drive C, be sure to use the /s
  270.              parameter to make the disk bootable. To do this, type the
  271.              following command at the MS-DOS command prompt and then
  272.              press ENTER:
  273.           
  274.                 format c: /s
  275.           
  276.           5. Use the MS-DOS 6 RESTORE command, which is located on the
  277.              startup disk you created in step 2, to restore your
  278.              program and data files. For example, to restore your
  279.              files from drive A to drive C, type the following command
  280.              at the MS-DOS command prompt and then press ENTER:
  281.           
  282.                 restore a: c:\*.* /s
  283.           
  284.               Important: Do NOT restart your computer before
  285.               proceeding to step 6.
  286.           
  287.               Note: If some of your files cannot be restored to your
  288.               hard disk because you don't have enough disk space, you
  289.               need to install the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade, run DoubleSpace to
  290.               compress your hard disk, and then restore your files.
  291.               After you finish restoring your files, continue with
  292.               step 6.
  293.           
  294.           6. To remove your DR DOS files, install the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade
  295.              again. To do this, insert the MS-DOS 6 Setup Disk 1 in
  296.              drive A, type "setup" (without the quotation marks), and
  297.              follow the instructions on your screen.
