  6.     WordPerfect Corporation has released version 5.2 of WordPerfect for
  7.     Windows (WPWIN).  This version has many improvements and
  8.     enhancements over 5.1.
  9.  
  10.     Installation is a three step procedure. First you install WPWIN,
  11.     which requires 12MB for a full installation. The next two
  12.     installations are for Grammatik, which takes up 2MB, and Adobe Type
  13.     Manager (ATM), and its fonts. You do not have to install either of
  14.     these. Grammatik is accessible through WordPerfect.

  16.     Features of WPWIN v5.2
  17.  
  18.         * Drag-and-drop text. WPWIN allows you to drag highlighted text
  19.     and drop it anywhere in your document without having to use the cut
  20.     and paste commands.
  21.  
  22.         * QuickFinder. WPWIN has developed a fast indexing and
  23.     text-retrieval technology and built it right into the word
  24.     processor. You can build an index from directories, subdirectories,
  25.     and drives and quickly access that data whenever it's needed.
  26.  
  27.         * Mail Enabled. Send WP documents through e-mail using whichever
  28.     major mail package happens to be your favorite.

  30.         * Grammatik 5
  31.         * Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)
  32.         * Adobe Type Manager (ATM)
  33.         * New Macros and Button Bars, along with a QuickMenu to make
  34.     Button Bars even more accessible.

  36.     They have improved on the envelope printing routine. Previously, you
  37.     could not print an envelope using the Windows driver. Now you can.
  38.     You also can have multiple return addresses and select from them. I
  39.     have a problem with printing the bar code below the address. No
  40.     matter what settings I choose, I cannot achieve this. Other programs
  41.     allow it just fine.

  43.     I did notice several other things, which have to be worked on.
  44.     First, there is no macro editor. You can create a macro, but you
  45.     cannot edit one. You must create a new one. Also, there is no direct
  46.     support for ATM or TrueType fonts, when using the WordPerfect
  47.     drivers. I may understand TT, but ATM comes with WPWIN. There are
  48.     two alternatives around this. One is to use the slower Windows
  49.     driver. This can cause fonts, and text to type differently, if you
  50.     had created it, and saved it, while using the WordPerfect drivers.
  51.     The other is to purchase MoreFonts by MicroLogic Software. There is
  52.     an option in the WPWIN box to purchase this for $29.95. MoreFonts
  53.     does work, and will be reviewed in a future issue. However, I would
  54.     have liked to see a little program built-in to WPWIN that would
  55.     allow this without the added charge of another program. Finally, I
  56.     noticed that while using WPWIN, while doing a download with my modem
  57.     I was getting erratic results with the modem. Closing WPWIN solved
  58.     this, as restarting it caused it to reoccur. This has happened
  59.     several times. I think WPWIN is taking over much of the system when
  60.     it is active, whether full screen or iconized.

  62.     WordPerfect has always been a leader in the word processing field. I
  63.     was impressed enough to give WPWIN 5.2 a CTM Editor's Choice Award
  64.     for 1992. WordPerfect also has excellent technical support. Not only
  65.     is the call free, but the people are very knowledgeable about the
  66.     product. WordPerfect users should be pleased with this product.
  67.     However, I think WordPerfect has to develop the product as a TRUE
  68.     Windows program, and leave the DOS drivers behind. I use MS Windows
  69.     Printing System, which is a Windows print d river, and when I
  70.     activate WPWIN, using WP drivers, it disables this program, causing
  71.     my printer to restart. Trying to retain compatibility between DOS
  72.     and Windows via the printer drivers, will hamper the Windows
  73.     product. Yes, it is a big seller. But the need to switch drivers,
  74.     can create problems for users.

  76.     WPWIN comes with a 90-day money-back guarantee. Licensed WPWIN users
  77.     can purchase a WPWIN 5.2 upgrade kit for $39.95 US/$48.CAN from
  78.     resellers or direct for WP orders at (800) 321-4566. Upgrade kit
  79.     includes an upgrade guide (small booklet), disks and documentation
  80.     for Grammatik and ATM. A full upgrade package with complete
  81.     documentation is available for $99.US/$120.CAN. Users of any other
  82.     Windows or DOS word processor costing at least $395.US can purchase
  83.     a competitive trade-up package for $129.US/$155.CAN.
