  8.                 GUIDELINES FOR USING NOVELL'S COMPSURF UTILITY
  9.

  11. The following are some general guidelines that should be followed when using
  12. Novell's compsurf utility:
  13.  
  14.     NEVER use the format option in COMPSURF when:
  15.  
  16.       - Using a SCSI drive.
  17.  
  18.       - Using a drive over 1024 cylinders.
  19.  
  20.       - Using a WD1007A-XXX hard drive controller.
  21.  
  22.       - Hard drive manufacturer forbids it.
  23.  
  24.  
  25.     To successfully prepare a hard drive (over 1024 cylinders) for Novell, do
  26.     the following:
  27.  
  28.       - Set drive type in CMOS per manufacturers recommendations.
  29.  
  30.       - Low-level format using the manufacturers format utility (i.e.,
  31.         HDFORMAT for an AST drive).
  32.  
  33.       - If the drive requires the Novell compsurf "stamp", run compsurf but DO
  34.         NOT take the format option.
  35.  
  36.       - As soon as the compsurf utility starts, it will check track 0.
  37.         Immediately after the track 0 test is completed (usually within 45
  38.         seconds), hit the ALT + F10 keys twice.  This should stop the compsurf
  39.         utility and "stamp" the drive.
  40.
