  1. Composite monitor or LCD screen

  4. If you have a composite monitor (a one color monitor such as that in the
  5. Compaq portables) or an LCD screen (laptops) and you have trouble reading
  6. the screens in PAFAbility, you will need to set the video mode to black
  7. and white before executing PAFAbility. The following DOS command will set
  8. the video mode to black and white:
  9.  
  10.              c:\> mode bw80
  11.  
  12. After you have finished using PAFAbility, type "MODE CO80" at the DOS prompt
  13. to reset the video mode to color.
  14.  
  15. Dot matrix printers
  16. -------------------

  18. Some Epson compatible printers are more compatible than others. If the reset
  19. option doesn't work on your printer, that's why.
  20.  
  21. NOTES AND PICA TYPE
  22. -------------------

  24. If you choose Pica type and want to include notes in the report, you are not
  25. going to like what you see. The problem is the way PAF handles notes. The PAF
  26. notes editor is line oriented, not paragraph oriented, as a word processor is.
  27. Every line ends with a hard return. Therefore, there is no way for a program
  28. to determine whether or note the note in question is a paragraph style note,
  29. such as:

  31.       Conflict: [1900] Census lists as Dowe, Peter, age 33, section foreman
  32.       for R. RR., boarding with John Brown ....
  33.  
  34. or a list, such as:
  35.  
  36.       Sources:  Birth Certificate
  37.                 Marriage certificate
  38.                 Death certificate
  39.  
  40. Each line of a PAF note can be up to 80 characters long. An 8½" wide piece of
  41. paper can accomodate 85 characters, at most, with pica type. As you can see,
  42. by the time margins are deducted and the other formatting indentations, there
  43. is not room left on the line for a full length note line. PAFAbility
  44. terminates the line to fit and puts the rest of the note line on the next line
  45. of the report. Then, the next note line starts a new line on the report. Thus,
  46. you get the long line, short line, long line, short line pattern.

  48. I'm working on some ideas to get around this for version 3, but, in the
  49. meantime, this is how it is.

  54. If you receive this message, try freeing up more memory by selecting the
  55. "don't load the name file into memory" option on the "Options/Misc" panel.

  57. Number of children per parent
  58. -----------------------------

  60. PAFAbility currently can handle up to 60 children for one individual. If
  61. you have someone with more than 60 children, you will receive unpredicatable
  62. results. Please contact me if you encounter this situation.
