IMPROCES(C). Copyright John Wagner 1991-92. All rights reserved.
PROJECT1.DOC is the first in a series of projects using IMPROCES. The
tone of the project series will be light. Hopefully they will help
increase your enjoyment of IMPROCES and maybe shed some light on some
fun things to do with IMPROCES.
If you are a shareware vendor, see the end of this file for information
concerning the distribution policy of IMPROCES project files. Any and
all BBS's may carry the IMPROCES project series without receiving
permission from me.
It is assumed that all users of the IMPROCES project series have a copy
of IMPROCES and are familiar with the basic operation of the program.
For instance, instead of walking ourselves all the way through loading a
GIF image, I'll just say "load up xyz.gif". Instead of "move the mouse
to the ENHANCE menu item and click the left mouse button, then move the
mouse to FILTERS...", I'll say "select ENHANCE-FILTERS".
See the section on HOW TO OBTAIN A COPY OF IMPROCES if you do not
already have one.
---- PROJECT 1, Sharpening, Clipboard Painting and Pages----
Written for IMPROCES, Version 4.0.
Overview of Project 1:
Load up VER1.GIF, change pages, sharpen the image, cut it to the
clipboard, changes pages, use Clip Paint to paint the areas you want to
sharpen back into the original image.
Sharpening:
Often times when an image is captured, photographed and scanned or in
some way made into an electronic image, it is necessary to enhance it or
to somehow increase the perceived sharpness of it. IMPROCES allows you
to do this by using a process known as CONVOLUTION (for more information
on the convolution process, see the file PRIMER.DOC, distributed with
the IMPROCES package).
To demonstrate the use of sharpening, load up the included VER1.GIF file
into video mode 320x200 using CLEAR mode (yes, that is my cat). Then
select FILE-PAGES... and then PAGE 2. Answer YES to save the changes and
NO, so you don't clear the screen. Select ENHANCE-FILTERS. Now select
WORK AREA. Resize the work area so that the entire image area is
selected. Select GREYSHARPEN. Wait a few seconds. Answer YES, you want
to accept the changes.
The image is now sharpened.
The Clipboard and Clip Paint:
Select CLIP and then select CUT. Cut out the entire screen. Select
FILE-PAGES... and then select PAGE 1. Answer YES when asked if you want
to save the changes to Page 2.
Select CLIP and then PASTE. Hit the left mouse button (the clip box
should cover the entire screen) to select the area you want to paste the
clip image into.
Select CLIP PAINT from the menu, then select NO when asked if you want
to use overlay mode. You will have 12 paintbrush styles to choose from
in the top-left corner. Select the large round brush and the put the
brush over Veronicas nose. Hit the left mouse button to begin painting.
As you move the brush, the area under the brush that was in the
clipboard will replace the area on the screen that the brush is over.
You can stop painting by hitting the RMB. Start again by hitting the
LMB, or hit the RMB to go back to the brush menu and select a new brush.
Once you are at the brush menu, you can hit the RMB again to re-position
the clipbox and paint again. Hit the RMB while you are in re-position
mode to return to the pull-down menus.
If you want to switch back to the sharpened image on Page 2, select
FILE-PAGES and then PAGE 2. You can bounce back and forth between pages
whenever you want. IMPROCES will allow you to have up to 5 images loaded
on different pages at one time.
You can use the Clip Paint feature in many ways. One thing I like to do
with it is cut from one color image to another using the REMAP PAL
feature of the clipboard and then create images out of multiple other
ones for some really neat effects.
Experiments:
Sharpening:
Try adjusting the BOOST in the ENHANCE-FILTERS-BOOST section.
Load a color image and try COL SHARPEN.
Make your own sharpening filter: Use GREYCUSTOM for grey scale images
or COLCUSTOM for color images. Try: 0 -1 0
-1 5 -1
0 -1 0
-or-
-1 0 -1
0 5 0
-1 0 -1
-or-
0 0 0
-1 3 -1
0 0 0
Clip Paint:
Load a color image. Cut a piece of it to the clipboard. Load a different
image. Select CLIP-REMAP PAL to best-fit the clipboard palette to the
new images palette. Paste the clip image in using CLIP PAINT.
Use the PAGES to load in multiple images and cut and paste between them
using the clipboard and the REMAP feature. Experiment with the OVERLAY
and AVERAGE modes of the clipboard. Try the FRINGE and SPRAY modes too!
That's it for this project file. If you have any suggestions for future
projects that you would like to see produced, or you would like to
produce your own IMPROCES projects, please contact me!
